I am growing more and more gobsmacked with my teenagers common sense and I wanted to hear some other funny stories.

This week alone, son has toasted bread with butter already on it because he couldn't be bothered to wait and it smelt like the house was on fire.

Was feeling ill, so made him a Lemsip. He poured it (literally) straight into his mouth then screeched he didn't realise it was hot. He watched me make it from the kettle.

Today he is working with me over his college half term in the office for some extra cash. Blew his nose, then proceeded to try and open my free standing air conditioner fin part as he thought ' I had a fancy Japanese bin'

Please tell me I am not alone😂😂😂

‘Are you sure you have brushed your teeth, your breath doesn’t smell of toothpaste?’
Six year old ‘You didn’t say use toothpaste!’
When I look after her DC I always add, ‘with toothpaste’

My 40ish husband hoovered up brick dust with our brand new Miele hoover.

It wasn't ruined but it's filthy inside, even washing and scrubbing doesn't seem to get all the crud off.

So it's not just the kids who are daft Wink

My bloody builder did this too and I was livid as it was only a few weeks old at the time. His wife has OCD and hoovers the whole house daily and there’s no way he’d have done something that stupid at home as she’d have killed him. 😂

However, I’m still using it 10yrs later even though it’s still white on the inside of the lid and where the bag goes. Thankfully, it still does a better job than the Dyson I owned before that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My 15 year old son was helping me power wash the patio. He decided to find out what would happen if he aimed it at his bare foot. It took all the skin off the top of his foot.
The same child was asked to empty the kitchen bin into the wheelie bin. Sometime later I couldn't find the kitchen bin. It was on the ground outside next to the wheelie bin. Apparently I hadn't specified that I needed him to bring the bin back inside.

To be fair to your teen last time I pressure washed the patio I decided to wash the mud off my crocs I was wearing at the same time - it hurt

My DS loves Tuna Pasta Bake made with the Colman's sachet of seasoning mix that you add milk to. When he first left home he told me he'd made it, but it didn't taste quite the same as mine. I asked him what he'd done and he said 'well first I mixed the tuna with the mayo and salad cream, like you told me....'

I said 'What? Why? Did it say add mayo and salad cream on the packet instructions?'

He said 'No, but you showed me to mix tuna with a bit of mayo and salad cream for sandwiches, so I thought that's what you needed to do to tinned tuna before you used it. So I did that first before adding it to the pasta and the sauce mix.'

Confused

Totally not the point but I bloody love those pasta baked too and had completely forgotten about them! I now know what my dinner will be tomorrow

On the Berocca subject, I fell foul of them in 2010. I was on a project in Aberdeen and had a horrible cold, a colleague said that there were some Berocca tablets in a drawer, they'd been there for ages, why didn't I take one...

I put it in my mouth, chewed and foamed at the mouth. As I was reluctant to spit it on the floor, I also foamed at the nose and my eyes watered.

I assumed that I looked like Cujo, as someone gave me a cup of water, with people looking on in horrified amusemamusement. Someone asked, "Why didn't put it in a glass of water?"

Well, I'd heard of it, but didn't know what it was, or that that's what you're meant to do with the bloody things! I was advised to take a tablet...

What are you lot doing wrong? Neither of mine EVER did anything as blatantly stupid as these comments. Clearly I brought up two sensible peeps.

Just because they didn't tell you it doesn't mean it didn't happen!

To be fair 40 years ago my mum gave me money to buy a stamp and post a letter.

I posted the letter and brought the stamp home.

Love it! My daughter would have done that. Even though she’s now 26 I have to phrase things carefully if there’s more than one step involved in what I’m asking her to do 🤣

This week my daughter put an already cooked naan bread in the microwave for 2 minutes to ‘soften it up’. Fire alarm blaring, microwave billowing black smoke and had to vacate the property. My kitchen has smoke damage and my microwave is ruined! Really looking forward to the boys hitting teenage years and having 3 of these things.

When I was a teenager I did 6 loads of washing. Was really proud of myself for getting off my ass.. couldn’t work out why the clothes weren’t clean. Mum asked how much soap powder I put in. How much I put in? I thought the machine dispensed it! Still stand by that being a brilliant time saver and no idea why Hotpoint and Samsung haven’t jumped all over the opportunity.

Miele Twindos does it with liquid detergent.

We needed a new washing machine last year, and at least 1 of the ones we looked at does do this. Can't remember which - we quickly discounted it because it needed laundry liquid, which we don't use. It is an excellent idea, though.

To throw you all, on my Siemens microwave it recommends a spoon be put in a container when heating up liquids.

Mine does too - meant to stop the liquid superheating and exploding in your face when your pour/stir it

But that's why you put the toaster on it's side! 😉

Pippyls67 · 02/03/2025 12:11

At about 18 I remember my brother actually tried to weigh his head on the kitchen scales to see if it was heavier and had more brains than mine! 🙄

its a discussion thread, I'm discussing.

Perhaps, but you’re still derailing it. Spoiling the spirit of it. Kindly participate in another thread where you might be more welcome. Thank you.

Asked my 13 year old to put the milk back in the fridge.....

Didn't think I needed to state that the lid would need to be put on first....

Found milk on its side on fridge shelf, sans lid, hours later.....

Last night my 13yo was telling me she was going to try to see the planet alignment, but was worried it would be too dark to see anything as it would be night.

She had a giggle at herself when she realised what she had said!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/03/2025 13:22

Only yesterday I caught DS1 (15) putting the towel he'd just used after his shower back in the airing cupboard because 'that's what you do'. I've never told him this.

I did the same thing with a Haliborange vitamin C tablet. I don't know why.

I was making beads from straws as a small child (just cut the straws up then string them) I put one up my nose.

Because it was hollow nose blowing didn't work so it was a trip to A and E.

We saw an Indian Dr who I don't think had been in the country long who easily pulled it out with long tweezers but was completely baffled as to why I'd done it, he asked my mum more than once, "Why did she do this thing?"

But I was about 5.

MNHQ if you are watching, can we somehow keep this thread for 10 years so those with younger children can come back when they are teens?
