What used people say before 'call you out' became fashionable?

It's a horrible, ugly expression imo. Even worse than "reach out".

Had the last laugh recently when I was barged out of the way by some bloke - in his haste to shove past me he didn't realise I was closely followed by my wheely suitcase and he went arse over tit. Fortunately I was already round the corner and lost in the crowd by the time he was back on his feet. Instant karma 😊

Normally I am careful not to cause mayhem with wheely bags but he really had it coming.

Shame your foot wasn't accidentally sticking out...

Whenever I get rudely barged out the way to a seat on the train by an important commuting man I always say "don't worry, your need must be greater." Makes me feel MUCH better.

I'm surprised it happens quite often. But then again I am an invisible, middle aged woman.

Sorry, I had to 🤭 Great story - love to see karma in action!

The old members' room at the V&A was better, IMO - in part just because it was behind a mirrored door in the glass gallery, which gave you a bit of an Alice in Wonderland feel.

The V&A one is crazily overcrowded if there are big exhibitions on, and always at the weekends, but when it's quieter it's fine - it's much nicer than the British Museum one which really does feel like a student canteen.

What used people say before 'call you out' became fashionable?

Actually,. they said call so and so out a long time ago. But they were calling them out to fight a duel.

AlienBro · 20/02/2025 21:13

I'm Spartacus and so is my dog.

Oh, I feel for you. Had a lovely lunch out with a friend yesterday, really lovely, hadn't seen her for months. I had a voucher for part of the bill, when I presented it, the waiter was very Sherry and said ' Oh, a voucher'

I once approached the till in the mid-price furniture shop to which I'd been given a gift voucher, for the very posh shop assistant to look at it with a wrinkled nose, have no idea how to proces the sale, and then excuse herself - with a genuine tinkly little laugh - by saying "We're just not really a shop that does gift vouchers". As if I'd forged it myself on a home printer.

I very much gave her this look 🤔

letshavetea · 20/02/2025 21:00

Some of us are quite nice actually!

ladycarlotta · 20/02/2025 20:57

I actually walked away from the V&A lift today because it was taking an age to come and two very loud and swanky ladies were already warming up to be sharp-elbowed. Having worked extensively in big museums I can see the Friends/Members a mile off and they're always utter twunts.

The dinosaur shop next to the V&A has a remarkably similar clientèle when it comes to museum members. They can be absolute cunts. Think £62 a year makes them the bee's knees and they own the museum now. Imagine working with them 💀⚰️

NC28 · 20/02/2025 20:50

@NotSorry Ahh thanks. Would never have got that!

Can’t work out what V&A stands for.

Victoria and Albert Museum ?

NotSorry · 20/02/2025 20:49

@NC28 The Victoria & Albert Museum

chollysawcutt · 20/02/2025 20:47

Yeah, sorry about that.

letshavetea · 20/02/2025 20:45

Some people are just rude aren’t they? I agree with @AgathaMystery and @CatMum27 - the lift is dreary and slow and then when you get to the members lounge the food isn’t marvellous and takes an age to arrive! I was there two weeks ago - so it wasn’t me! I still love going to the V & A but I do think they could buck their ideas up in the members lounge!

I think "call you out" probably dates back a few hundred years tbf? As in for a duel.

ThereAreManyPathsToGoal · 20/02/2025 20:32

It’s just the entitlement that got on my nerves. Just rude.

AgathaMystery · 20/02/2025 20:26

The joke is on them. The members room is just blah and not great. I don’t know what I expected but it wasn’t that.

CatMum27 · 20/02/2025 20:25

People turn feral in that lift on a regular basis. Whenever I’ve been in it it takes an absolute age to arrive which doesn’t help the mood.

Maybe they were desperate for the last scone?

YesImawitch · 20/02/2025 20:24

" hold my beer"

Deedeesharpwhatkindoflady · 20/02/2025 20:22

What used people say before 'call you out' became fashionable?

They would slap them in the face with a herring and say 'your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries you brigand!!'
