Bloody members, paying a yearly fee, helping fund the exhibitions and collections, maintaining a consistent stream of financial support for our cultural institutions. Helping to keep the museums free for all. How dare they swank about 'up from Surrey' with their bags. Gah, they are really no better than they ought to be.
amirite?

Different context though.

Really, I thought it was exactly the same context? The only thing is it’s hard to take 10 paces away from each other in a lift I guess 😀

Some of us are quite nice actually!

Ok, yes. Not All Members, but Always A Member.

It's systemic. Lots of lovely people are museum/gallery members and why wouldn't they be? It's a great thing to do. But the whole situation is catnip to a type of superior, self-congratulatory person who likes to feel they literally own a place.

Can’t work out what V&A stands for.

If you know you know

No, exactly the same. Pulling someone up on their behaviour, just different consequences.

MoonWoman69 · 20/02/2025 22:46

Now, I'm not saying it was me. Because for one thing, I'm in Leeds. But I do admit to zoning out for a good 5 minutes. (Probably due to my husband prattling on endlessly and me wondering what it's like to be a man for a few minutes!) I don't honestly remember, but if it was me, I do apologise! And I'm not actually a member of the members room, I probably saw the lift button and just wanted a nosy! 😁

Mirabai · 20/02/2025 22:46

Nobody calls anyone out at the V&A.

I mean you could have a heated disagreement over William Morris but that’s as far as it should go.

In all the time I’ve been a member it’s never occurred to me to use it. It’s all a bit elitist for my taste.

Some members rooms are great, the one at Tate Britain is lovely, with a huge quiet overflow room if it gets very busy. The Tate Modern one has an outside terrace that is good on a warm not windy day. The RA one is full of ladies up from Surrey for a days shopping and culture, they tend to hog a space and build a wall with their shopping bags and date you to challenge them for a spare seat!

Can I just go really off-topic (sort of)?

I'd really like to know what you think about the current members room, if that isn't too much to ask?

I know somebody who has been a member for a very long time indeed (I'm sure that it wouldn't have been her who did that for reasons). She said that she absolutely hated the new members room after they did it up in 2017 (I think she said?).

Can I ask what you think of the members room? Is it relaxing or really quite noisy? Apparently it used to be quite a nice place to sit and relax but (so she claims) has been turned into a noisy cafe with hard surfaces everywhere that just reflect all the noise.

TagSplashMaverick · 20/02/2025 22:40

I think they need to calm down a bit, it’s 70-odd quid a year to join. 😂

Someone who would let something like that go to their head is utterly classless and should be laughed at.

viques · 20/02/2025 22:27

The v and a members room is a nightmare, overcrowded, uncomfortable tables ( the low ones) and the food isn’t as good as the cafe downstairs. I sometimes use my friends membership but don’t bother with the members room.

Garlicworth · 20/02/2025 22:33

Having never been a demure type, my post-menopausal nonsense intolerance has been more of an internal development than behavioural. But I noticed I've started exclaiming "Rude!". This a recent thing, and I like it a lot. It comes out so clearly and indignantly 😂 I'm looking forward to the day my inner voice starts vocalising "What appalling manners" in the same dismissive tone it uses in my head.

Motomum23 · 20/02/2025 22:30

Oof if I had done much social media 17-ish years ago I would have totally made a post about the radio one DJ that actually shoved me whilst I was holding my 1 year old baby in a full leg cast so he could get to the front of the easyjet speedy boarding queue. I was so young and quiet then I didn't say anything... now they would get a complete earful! 🤣🤣

Told them off?
Said something?
Had a go at them?
Gave them a hard stare/dirty look?

I think the whole concept of calling out comes from the extra-virtue-signalling society of cancel culture that we have today. I don't think there's a previous equivalent as we weren't able to public-shame before social media.

Except for putting people in the stocks and pillory ect ect Not everything is a woke 21st century invention.

I think "call you out" probably dates back a few hundred years tbf? As in for a duel.

Different context though.

It was me. And I'd do it again 😎

People turn feral in that lift on a regular basis. Whenever I’ve been in it it takes an absolute age to arrive which doesn’t help the mood.

Maybe they were desperate for the last scone?

It is small, to be fair.

I once approached the till in the mid-price furniture shop to which I'd been given a gift voucher, for the very posh shop assistant to look at it with a wrinkled nose, have no idea how to proces the sale, and then excuse herself - with a genuine tinkly little laugh - by saying "We're just not really a shop that does gift vouchers". As if I'd forged it myself on a home printer.

I very much gave her this look 🤔

Tiffany does gift vouchers, and so does Cartier, and Harrods, Harvey Nicks etc. All it means is that someone's bought you a present from the shop. What a weird thing to be snobby about.🤷‍♀️

The dinosaur shop next to the V&A has a remarkably similar clientèle when it comes to museum members. They can be absolute cunts. Think £62 a year makes them the bee's knees and they own the museum now. Imagine working with them 💀⚰️

You can buy dinosaurs there? Like, little baby ones?

It's a horrible, ugly expression imo. Even worse than "reach out".

Both American imports, I think.

What used people say before 'call you out' became fashionable?

Confront you or address your rudeness

A lift on the road to nowhere?

SqueakyDinosaur · 20/02/2025 21:46

Derail warning It's unbelievable how much more space men feel entitled to! I got into a contretemps a couple of weeks ago with a very unpleasant man who parked his car right next to my driver's door and then was extremely aggressive when I carefully opened the door but had to touch it against his car to actually get into the car.

He asked how I would feel if he "banged" his door into my car and I said I'd be fine because a. I wasn't a histrionic drama queen and b. my car wasn't made of glass. So he did - he came round and banged his door into mine about 100x harder than I'd touched his. Luckily my car is a Mini and they are like tanks so it was fine.

I did wind down the window and say in a mumsy voice "did that make'oo feel better then?" And then reversed out and drove off at high speed....
