Does this sound like benefit fraud?

Someone I know has separated from their husband but they are still living together as neither has anywhere else to live.

He still pays all of the bills and mortgage and nursery fees, her phone bill, petrol, everything.
She works and is now claiming UC as a single parent.
Is this right? She's getting all bills and mortgage paid by him and her wage is practically her own plus UC.
She's never been so well off and is going on holidays with the kids and having expensive days out because she's got no expenses other than food.
I'm not saying she doesn't deserve it if she's entitled to it fair enough but something doesn't add up.

It is fraud if they are still in a relationship. If they are, then they need to submit a joint claim.
However, couples do split up and still live together. It would be up to someone at the DWP as to whether the pair are living together as a married couple, or are separated. The fact he pays the bills etc does make things tricky.
Someone on here (who works for the DWP) told me that I would be in trouble for my ex paying my gas bill, even though he does not even live in this country (and I still live in his house, he does not).

You wouldn't be in trouble for this and lots of former couples have informal financial arrangements either as part of maintenance arrangements or in lieu of them. For example, my cousin's ex doesn't pay a set child support payment but he does pay half the mortgage on the former marital home, DCs dinner money/school pay apps are set to his bank details, and he pays half of whatever clothes/equipment/shoes/school stuff/clubs DC needs which all frees up that same amount of money in my cousin's finances.

Why would UC do this? I claimed as a single parent a few years ago as me and DP split up. We still lived in the house together as I couldn’t get the nasty abusive fucker out.

All UC did was split the rent in half so that’s the only deduction they made. They knew he was living there. Only difference was he refused to pay anything so I was bloody skint only getting half rent from UC as all the bills and Direct Debits were more than my wages. UC didn’t care who paid what, they might have been interested if he was still here after a year for example but he moved out after 3 months.

i never had to provide proof that we had split up or who was paying what.

DWP are currently doing reviews of people who are claiming UC. You need to show 4 months of bank statements, savings etc.
They might very well ask why this person is not paying bills, and has a claim as a single person... although there are many circumstances where this might be legitimate anyway.

MugsyBalonz · 20/02/2025 18:25

It's not fraud.

You can be separated and living together out of necessity but still claim as a single person. As part of the application process she will have needed to prove they are separated before the claim was approved. This could include proof that Amy joint accounts have been dissolved, separation agreement documents, initiation of divorce proceedings, evidence of bills being moved into solo names, and so on. They don't just approve the claim and hand over money, all of this information needs to be provided and verified first.

Why are you so bitterly jealous of this woman? Are you the other woman and worried she's hanging onto your man?

And you know this how; are you her bank manager??

I'd lay odds she doesn't give you a break down of her bank statement.

Another poster who knows all about their 'friends' incoming and outgoings....

We get a lot of those here recently

Boomer55 · 20/02/2025 18:09

Another benefit fraud thread? 🙄🙄

MyLimeGuide · 20/02/2025 18:07

There are loads of cheapscates out their working the system OP, LOADS. MN posters don't like this topic for some reason! Like the others have said, you can report it but don't let it stress you out. If she IS playing the system it will catch up with her eventually.

madaboutpurple · 20/02/2025 18:03

I sat leave the lady be. It could cause hardship to the children. I wouldn't want to be responsible for that happening. Are you sure you have the full facts on the situation.

ToBlithelyGo · 20/02/2025 18:01

I wish MN would blanket ban these benefit bashing threads.

Mortgage being paid means she does not get the housing element.

Her ex paying petrol, phone, nursery could be instead of paying child support .

People on benefits are allowed to go on holiday.

Puppydogjogs · 20/02/2025 17:59

Beware the pit you dig for your brother, lest you fall in yourself.

Clarice99 · 20/02/2025 17:57

onlyjames · 20/02/2025 14:48

Well I don't want to report it if it seems perfectly legitimate to others which is why I was asking.

It's not up to random people on the internet to decide whether it's legitimate or not.

Report it. Let the officials decide if it's fraud or not.

With respect, how do you know this about her?

BobbyBiscuits · 20/02/2025 17:53

It's none of your business. Why can't people just focus on their own finances rather than writing on here about shopping their family and friends to the government for suspected fraud?
Their loss won't be your gain so just forget about it.

SwisswolvesLilley · 20/02/2025 17:46

An acquaintance of mine once said her husband had met another woman and they were splitting up, but there was something odd about her reaction that I couldn't quite put my finger on. It was as though she wasn't really bothered, and the story had been rehearsed, no tears, no emotion, no nothing. It later transpired the husband lives on paper with his mother and my acquaintance was now claiming UC as a single parent, with hubby living unofficially in her house. I think the 'other woman' story was exactly that, a story for them to separate and claim benefits. I would never report it, but have my suspicions about why the split really came about.

FurAll · 20/02/2025 17:36

No it’s not benefit fraud because these people are a figment of your imagination OP.

Yet another so called 'benefit fraud' thread today?

It is almost as if there is a concerted attempt to push a particular agenda...

This

ThreeFeetTall · 20/02/2025 17:21

She won't be getting that much as is working as has no rent to pay. (Unless she is claiming the nursery fees which he is paying which does seem a bit dodgy)

ValentineValentineV · 20/02/2025 17:11

Report it if you really think it is fraud (I don’t think it is) but probably nothing will happen even if it’s dodgy.

I’ve reported the same person three times (it 100% is fraud) and so far there have been no consequences.

Hadenough2022 · 20/02/2025 17:08

You can report anonymously and let the relevant people decide. It may well be legitimate or it may be done to claim benefits.

HauntedBungalow · 20/02/2025 17:07

No, it doesn't sound like fraud.

Are you very underutilized, OP?

GRCP · 20/02/2025 17:05

How is it any of your business? What do you gain from reporting them? Life is hard enough.

Exactly this.
Make up dodgy benefit claim/fraud stories and get people all good and frothy.
