Should I report my cousin's benefit fraud?

Hi everyone - I'm having a bit of a moral dilemma and looking to get everyone's opinions.

My M34 cousin doesn't work, he claims PIP. I'm not that familiar with how it works but he says he's on the highest level available, and there's even talk of him getting given a car. He openly boasts at every opportunity about the extreme exaggerations and outright lies he put on his PIP application, and calls me and other members of the family idiots for working when we could just get our money from PIP like he does.

If they investigated him they would easily find that some of his lies don't add up. I believe he genuinely does have depression and anxiety, but he has no physical issues. He said he put things like his partner needs to dress him in the morning (he split from his partner a couple of years ago), needs to wear velcro shoes as he can't tie laces etc. A home visit would show up some of his lies, and a call to the school (he's a weekend Dad but sometimes picks up/drops off his sons) or the Police (he's been arrested for drug offences a couple of times) would be further proof.

The main thing stopping me from reporting him is his depression. He has attempted suicide on at least one occasion, and I fear that a potential prison sentence for fraud could send him into a spiral. Even if no-one found out it was me, I really don't want that on my conscience.

If he didn't boast all the time I would just ignore it, it's not like it affects me directly, but it just winds me up every time he goes on about. Grrrr!! I do try to minimise contact with him but sometimes it's easier said than done. If he gets this car I think he'll become even more unbearable 😡

Help! What would you do?

If his MH is so poor he's attempted suicide it doesn't sound like he's particularly well...... either way evidence is needed for PIP so it sounds like he's entitled and perhaps you should keep your nose out?

Thank you everyone, I didn't expect this many replies.

Interesting to see the mix of people saying it's virtually impossible to make a false/exaggerated claim, and others saying it's very easy.

To those calling me out saying the story isn't true or things don't add up - it is completely true, but I'm not particularly close to my cousin (to be honest I can't stand him, which is probably obvious from my post) so I only know what he's chosen to share. Which is just the bits he feels are worth boasting about. I have no idea what proof he had to give.

I have no doubt that he has depression and other mental health issues so I'm sure he qualifies for some PIP, but I'm confident he shouldn't be getting the level he gets now.

I've got a pretty mixed range of responses, but I'm leaning towards keeping my nose out. I'll just need to practice my "smile politely, pretend I'm not seething inside" face for next time I see him 😂

You openly admit you don't know all the ins and outs of his claim or his lifestyle.

It always amazes me on these sort of threads how everyone else knows the other parties benefit/personal details in full.

The only person who truly knows all this is the claimant themselves.

You are legally obligated to report or you're incriminated as well.

How so?

Anywherebuthere · 20/02/2025 12:24

Doing something that might potentially really tip someone over the edge would be something I wouldnt want to have to live with. I wouldnt get involved.

Katemax82 · 20/02/2025 12:21

My advice? I'm just pointing out the bit about "getting a car" isn't simply being given a car. I'm a bit defensive of motability cars because some idiot on the daily mail was slagging off parents who have kids with add who get "free brand new cars" and should get an old banger instead

I saw something similar,
Some twat thought we should go back to the old invacar.

Keepingongoing · 20/02/2025 12:23

I’m doubting that your post is genuine, @GreatAmberSnake . As a claimant, your cousin would know that he won’t get ‘given’ a car. If you get the mobility component of PIP, you can lease a car - which you pay for out of your benefit. You get information about this ( the motability scheme) when your claim starts.

IF your post is genuine, there’s no dilemma here. You’re afraid that the repercussions of a fraud investigation will drive him to suicide, and you don’t want that on your conscience. So don’t report him. If his boasting annoys you, give him a wide berth. But again, it sounds pretty implausible that he’s boasting about making a fraudulent claim.

There are systems in place which pick up fraud, and almost everyone has to go through a review or reclaim periodically.

I suspect that this is a benefit claimants bashing thread.

No need to seethe silently ... You could say "oh do be quiet or one day you'll brag in front of someone who will report you for fraud"

Report. No doubts.

Katemax82 · 20/02/2025 12:21

Coconutter24 · 20/02/2025 09:47

So what exactly is your advice? It comes across like you’re saying because he isn’t exactly rolling in it to leave him to continue to fraudulently claim money he isn’t entitled to?

Don't you believe it's op's cousin?

Not 1 bit.

x2boys · 20/02/2025 12:20

DazedDragon · 20/02/2025 12:17

And the OP says it is a claim based on lies. There is no harm in reporting a potential false claim.

I'm a believer in karma, and those who lie and cheat in life will get what they deserve one day.

The same Op who diesnt know how PIP works and makes no bones about disliking her cousin 🤔

itsallabitofamystery · 20/02/2025 12:19

I honestly don't know how people DO get it. I broke my elbow several years ago. My local hospital didn't do a very good job with it, and one arm is now almost 4 inches shorter than the other. I cannot clean properly, and fastening my bra is impossible without my kids (who won't live with me forever). PIPs answer was I could use aids. I could use a sports bra, I could hire a cleaner, I could buy an automatic car etc. I could have appealed but it was such a draining process. So as someone with a physical disability, I honestly don't know how people can fake it and get away with it.

I wouldn't report it as I'm not that bothered about what other people do, but agree it is frustrating.

DazedDragon · 20/02/2025 12:17

x2boys · 20/02/2025 12:09

They have ALREADY assessed the claim and given him an award based on that assessment
But the Op who admits she knows nothing about PIP and doesn't like her cousin feels the rates are wrong.

Pip isn't a benefit that is just thrown at people and your "cousin" has been awarded it for his medical conditions, by the time you typed out your lengthy post you could have emailed DWP to report your perceived benefit fraudbut you decided to talk about your "cousin" on the Internet because you are "worried" about their mental health. 🙄

Don't you believe it's op's cousin?

Purplebunnie · 20/02/2025 12:14

ThisOldThang · 20/02/2025 11:58

I think a 'few thousand' is wildly optimistic.

It really isn't - PIP not so much but housing benefit, CTR and SPD there is a lot of fraud. SPD is the most prevalent

0ohLarLar · 20/02/2025 12:12

3.6 million people in the UK receive pip. It is not "notoriously difficult" to access if 3.6 million people are managing it.

Most claims are turned down. 53% I think.

PandoraSox · 20/02/2025 12:13

My DH get PIP. We spend it on booze n fans n a big telly. My DH fooled the silly DWP into thinking he has an incurable MND. So easy to fake. Suckers!

Brefugee · 20/02/2025 12:13

Just keep your beak out and ignore.

ParsnipPuree · 20/02/2025 12:11

Dh's relative is also abusing the system, must've put all sorts of lies on his form to get PIP. I've just now seen a clip of him dancing away at a cruise disco. Dh who's in the top 0.1% of uk earners finds this a particularly bitter pill to swallow but won't report him.

Sick of how taxpayers Money is misappropriated when there is so much need.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/02/2025 12:11

@DazedDragon I don't think it's my business, how do I know how much help someone needs bathing in their own home? Unless I live in the same house and monitor their movements how can I be sure they're lying? I do not poke my nose into others financial affairs. Their loss won't be my gain.

Frankly I've better things to do with my life.

x2boys · 20/02/2025 12:09

DazedDragon · 20/02/2025 12:05

So let them assess the case and decide if he is receiving the right benefits.

Benefits are there for people who GENUINELY need them or as a temporary measure to get back on your feet. Anyone abusing the system should have repercussions.

People should ALWAYS report anyone they suspect cheating the system.

They have ALREADY assessed the claim and given him an award based on that assessment
But the Op who admits she knows nothing about PIP and doesn't like her cousin feels the rates are wrong.

Fargo79 · 20/02/2025 12:09

Why not have the courage of your convictions and tell him you think he's a liar and a fraud next time he "brags"? Instead of anonymously and sneakily reporting your suicidal family member because you think he's lying (even though you don't know the ins and outs of his condition, his medical situation or the evidence he's been required to produce).

If you were actually concerned about fraud costing the taxpayer money, there are far far bigger fish to fry and causes that you could lend your time to. It's extremely difficult to get any kind of disability benefits, as anybody who has actually gone through the process for themselves or their children will know. If you have enough proof to be sure that you're correct and you genuinely feel you're doing the right thing, you don't need to be sneaky about it; tell your cousin and the rest of your family that you're reporting him.

Or maybe you have just swallowed all the propaganda about disabled people and benefits.
