I never thought I'd see the US aligning with Russia

The US appear under Trump to be aligning with Putin and Russia more and more.

What was until recently referred to as our greatest allie is moving close to Russia in many ways, carving up Ukraine for Russia, trade deals with Russia.

It's bizarre.

Aibu to think it's bizarre or was this always coming when trump was elected?

Agreed. Trump has never made any secret of his liking for Putin. Both are dictators really. Those who elected Trump can expect to see their "democracy" that they so admire moving more and more towards a dictatorship.

I do hope that Starmer and all other western leaders (Australia, the EU etc.) have been making some plans regarding how to deal with him properly. His threats about Canada, Greenland and Panama seem serious. Then there is his proposal to take over Gaza and turn it into the Riviera of the Middle East!

He's a serious threat to world security and any "special relationship" must now be in shreds and consigned to history. For now, until America is able to vote in a proper president rather than a despotic twat.

The main cause for hope here is he couldn’t maintain wars on all of those fronts simultaneously, not even with Russian help

The US held an election during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln held the election, even though he believed he would lose, because democracies hold elections. At this point, Zelensky is a dictator and the US government is responding accordingly.

The British postponed the General Election in WW2. Are you implying Sir Winston Churchill was a dictator?

Where does Trump stop? The US seems hellbent on taking everyone and everything over and has been trying for years. This is probably a post for another Topic but just an example , my DH and me were talking about how much American stuff is in our TV/Social media etc etc …. You go to look up something on YouTube and guarantee most are American . Makes me wonder if it’s the same in Countries like Germany/France/Spain . It annoys me when researching something I bought or looking for advice , the majority of Posts are American .
Don’t get me wrong , I’m not racist in the least and I have American relatives who I’ve visited on many occasions . But to me Americans are totally different to us apart from speaking English and that’s questionable 😉they have a completely different lifestyle. Are we all to become Americanised?

But you can change that. If you want to support UK and European social media personas, youtubers or TV shows, change how you search, or look through the results until you find someone from the UK or whereever your preference lays.

Since a lot of people are intereconnected and behind some European or UK media people may be US investment companies or capital or management, and people from different countries cooperate, it won't necessarily be clear cut, but already different from 100% US.

Regarding shows, you can check on imbd where a show or movie was produced. It's always very powerful to vote with your purchasing power.

I don't think becoming 100% isolationist is the way to go, as countries benefit from cooperation and exchange, but no reason to get steamrollered by one country only either.

Of course he looks weak, he's literally making concessions to a bully. Which bit of the USA would he be happy to give away if Putin wanted it? He seems to genuinely think he can chat to Putin and 'fix' this, because he's that deluded. He can't and all he's doing is emboldening Putin for future land grabs. Knowing the USA will not only not stop him, but enable him, will be making the whole of the former Soviet Union and some of the Scandinavian countries very nervous.

Trump's attitude seems to be that so long as the USA is OK, everyone else can get fucked. But that kind of isolationism just isn't possible in our globalised world. Apart from the fact it also makes him a massive shit, but we knew that anyway.

To who he looks weak Europeans

The world out of Europe is not overly interested in a small part of Europe

Israel and Gaza is a different matter the US do not want to be supporting both as its incredibly costly, far more money involved in the ME and the west needs to have a strong safe western alliance there

You really think the majority of Americans are happy to spend billions of dollars supporting Ukraine when so many are struggling with nothing in return

Of course Trump doesn't care the argument about giving away part of the US doesn't come into it that would be putting the question to someone who is reasonable Trump isn't

Halfemptyhalfling · 19/02/2025 17:33

If Boris had done nothing Putin would have had 3 years of Ukrainian resources whereas now russian economy is much weaker. Many Ukrainians have had time to set up new lives in Poland UK etc and keep links at home.

Boris and farage now need to be patriotic and stick up for UK values rather than letting trump walk allover UK right

Sigh

"They" could have been at the table
"They" bombed

Language games by A-holes.

Its kind of a worry to Alaska, Texas, California, Florida if the sitting commander in chief is willing to hand over Sovereign lands

And elections, hard to organise poll booths in war zones.

The USA is not a stable country any more.

They had a failed uprising 4 years ago, failed because the leaders had not gained enough support from the general population (and the muppet in the Bison hat was not anyway iconic).

Then for the next 4 years the elected leaders failed to carry the public with them.

Creating an external threat or common enemy is a way to create internal cohesion.

Trump ran on ending the war and reducing defense spending. Now everyone is surprised that he's ending the war and reducing defense spending.

Achieved fuck all ??? What would you prefer, Russia to have marched through, and then carried on ? Off into the Baltic Countries, and then head off to Central Europe.. because that’s what we are talking about. Putin is an expansionist Imperialist, and he wants to march into various other countries… and the line has to be protected somewhere.

The war is lost, our money was just wasted some anonymous firefight. Our money achieved nothing. We didn't stop the Russian advance, the US did. And no matter how much money we sent there, without US support it would still achieve nothing. Ukraine is running out of soldiers. Putin knows it, the US knows it, Ukraine knows it.

Putin is laughing at how weak the West is, how even the mighty US of A wants out of this mess. Putin has got exactly what he wanted. He has won.

Our 12 billion may has well have been pissed up against a wall.

The US however has provided head and shoulders above everyone in terms of military support, equipment, access to satellites and ISR.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1303432/total-bilateral-aid-to-ukraine/

Europe and Nato as a whole are reliant on American ISR.

And what is that as a proportion of their GDP?

It’s stupid comparing raw numbers with vastly different GDP and economies.

Exactly. And America making concessions is exactly what Chamberlain did with Hitler before WW2. And look how that turned out.

Allowing Russia to expand into an absolutely massive global superpower won't end well for anyone, including the USA.

ExtraOnions · 19/02/2025 17:11

As I said, nobody is stepping up apart from the US.

And we are reliant their satellite network also.

We wasted the 12 billion we sent to Ukraine. May as well have shredded the money. It achieved fuck all.

Well done us though, we gave away billions we didn't have, for a war which achieved nothing.

We could have had 350,000 new police officers or nurses for that 12 billion.

But no! Better to spend it firing bullets into bombed out buildings in a war that has nothing to do with us.

Why would they impeach him

The Republicans have the house and the senate. Impeaching a president makes the US look weak. It has never been successful

Right now Trump is looking anything but weak, last thing needed is actually an unsettled America even if that does mean Trump is President because if he was impeached it would cause a lot of upheaval in the country though I am sure his new best friend would happily see this happen

Putin is is a concern for Europeans

others around the world not so much

@Chiseltip £12.8bn from UK, a fraction of the size of US (which has sent £31.7bn) and EU has sent Ukraine £145bn.

Yes, OK. That's understandable.

But that poster said 'Europe did nothing to support Ukraine'. That's not true and it's offensive.

My country donated 570mln EUR from the Government, there were multiple fundraisers from private individuals (businesses, etc), we donated as much military equipment as we had, our men have been fighting in Ukraine from the start (I have family members who are there now), we took in refugees (my parents took in a Ukrainian family to live in one of their properties free of charge, bills paid), there are multiple organisations and individuals who are doing charity/help runs into Ukraine, bringing medicines, warm clothing, food items, etc.

Yes, I know, sounds like peanuts and doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. But we are a country with a population of 2.5 mln. Yes, the whole country is 2.5mln, not one city. We honestly did what we possibly could. Multiple other European countries also did too, obviously. So it's insulting to get 'you did nothing' in return.

That's incorrect. Ukraine was pro Russia until relatively recently. When it showed signs of wanting to move closer to Europe, Russia took Crimea.

Ukrainian government was attempting to be pro-Russian, not Ukraine. This was the reason Maidan happened... Ukraine always wanted to be independent, and were generally neutral to Russia as long as Russia did not interfere.

Out of interest, how is Fox News (for example) portraying this sudden allegiance with Russia? I am fascinated by the psychological hoops they must be having to jump through to sell it to their cold war fan base.

They are accusing Europe, Biden and Zelensky of starting the war and have started to depict Zelensky as being anti-democratic. I'm sure they showed the footage of Trump where he dishonestly claimed VZ was scoring 4% in polls.

Ukraine is now the aggressor and the enemy. As are we.😵‍💫

Funny how it never happens that way with gun ownership.

Powerful people make a lot from gun ownership and Americans love their constitution so it will be interesting to see how they react when Trump tries to change it.

Yes, they thought he wouldn't hurt them. He spouted his Populist policies and they voted without thinking them through. Like the UK and Brexit. Also I don't think they realised how hastily, nastily and ill-thought out Trump's proposals would be. I doubt anyone thought he'd endanger national security. Or that government contracts with them would be nulled with immediate effect..

@HRTQueen they could impeach him.

The ONLY reason that Ukraine has been able to fight as long as they have is because the US has been supporting them with billions of dollars of arms and satellite surveillance. No other nation on the planet has the resources and technology to do it.

Ukraine is running out of soldiers, something that Russia doesn't have to worry about. If the was goes on much longer Russia WILL overrun Ukraine and it will all have been for nothing.

Europe talked tough but did nothing to support Ukraine.

Trump isn't siding with Russia, he's just ripping the plaster off. We can't complain about the US pulling its support for Ukraine. If we don't like it, we can step up ourselves. But no, nobody wants to do that. It's fine as long as it's someone elses problem.

He's mad if he thinks Putin is going to stop at Ukraine, or even just a bit of Ukraine. Of course he isn't.

I wonder which of the US territory Trump would be prepared to give up if Putin wanted it?

He's an absolute moron and the fact that he's 'negotiating' with Putin is terrifying for the whole world.
