To ask my pharmacist to use my actual title on my medicine

Everythingisnumbersnow · 18/02/2025 16:00

decided to edit this a bit for clarity - I'm a Ms, my pharmacist keeps writing Miss on the labels (as part of a wider pattern of annoying behaviour). Will I look mad if I say please call me Ms on my labels?

(The prescriptions all say Ms)

I find ‘worked up’ a bit dismissive as a term. I’d definitely get ‘worked up’ over something like this. Not because I’m precious about my title but because I think women should be equal to men in all areas. I think the rule should be: would a man get ‘worked up’ over this? If a man would prefer not to be defined in terms of their marital status, then we’d find that understandable.

That said, I wouldn’t assume anything about the pharmacist. What’s that quote about assuming incompetence before malevolence. And it’s probably not even incompetence. Many people just haven’t given marital titles much thought.

I cannot imagine becoming so worked up over someone using the wrong title for me.
The attitude towards your prescription is a bit of an issue because they are not you or the Dr who prescribed it and so should provide without their negative opinions. Have an issue with that (maybe) but the title.... My mind is boggling. Just mention that it's wrong and can we kindly get it updated so it's correct? No need for a song and dance 🤗

I'm confused... isn't this EXACTLY what the OP was asking if she should do? How is what you've suggested getting 'worked up'?

Brokenrecordroundround · 23/02/2025 11:25

And yet no one who said OP is being unreasonable has given their full opinion - stated it's pretentious or not the place to correct a title etc but not said said why

I was too late to vote but I would have said she was being unreasonable and have posted a response to the op.
But now I'm thinking maybe she wasn't because it's something that means a lot to her.... Just because it doesn't meant that much to me.... Is that good enough reason to say she is BU.

I wouldn't get worked up over it though.

Dont you just love neurodiverse brains in the morning??

As a fellow Ms I'd suggest you get a grip. It's a simple error, not a deliberate insult. Do you have any idea the amount of pressure pharmacy staff work under?

What pressure are they under that correcting an error they have made such a big deal?

Eh? When did the OP claim that it was a deliberate insult?! Yes, it's a 'simple
error'... so why shouldn't a simple polite correction suffice? Honestly, I despair at some of these aggressive responses!

still peanuts dispensing fees.
Patient pays for the price of drug and a tiny fee to dispense it for a private prescription. not really a money maker. Community pharmacists are making a huge loss on nhs prescriptions (which make up 99.9% of work) with all the drugs that are in short supply and paying above what the prescription pricing authority pay them back for it - the tarrif is based on the cheapest brand of drugs available and if you can't get hold of it then the pharmacy pays for the cost difference. Why do you think a lot of them are closing down?

And before you know it the pharmacies will be very few and far between.

This is exactly how the patriarchy wins. Pitting women against each other.

I want to know why they think it’s pretentious.

Is it a weight loss drug like Montjaro?
I’m interested to know how much it costs. Is it £50 per month or for longer?

Sorry, misled you about the arthritis drug. In OP's original post - before she deleted it and wrote a new one - she said it was cannabis

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 22/02/2025 19:22

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/02/2025 10:08

But it's not relevant whether you think it's a fuss about nothing. You're not the person it's happening to, and the person it is happening to is annoyed by it.

I think somewhere in this thread has said it's not weight loss but a drug being prescribed for arthritis (but primarily used for cancer) - but I might be completely imagining this

But the debate is not about the accuracy of the medicine so point 2 does not apply.

And point 1 - it’s just a title is the argument. So why is “Miss” not a big deal but “Mr” is if all other details are correct?

The debate has moved on.

I agreed with a poster that said it was pretentious!

I replied to a poster that started the “hun” narrative!

I don’t need to come clean about the “Mrs” narrative, it doesn’t bother me!

Now please go join your 22% bullies and leave me to be happy in my own decisions?

Is that ok?

Why is “Ms” pretentious?

JHound · 22/02/2025 17:32

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 21/02/2025 17:44

I remember being on a train once, travelling to my home town. There was a group of people next to me talking about a teacher from the local primary school, who had just retired after 30 years. I knew it was her because she had an incredibly unusual surname.

Anyway, this oaf of a man, who was clearly no catch himself, said, "I always thought it was a shame that Miss Banana never married. She deserved to be a Mrs, not a Miss. And that old cow Mrs Apple, she should have been a Miss, not a Mrs."

If I'd been quicker off the mark, I'd have called him out on it and said something like, "Don't feel bad for her, at least she didn't marry a wanker like you." But in the moment I was just too gobsmacked.

I wonder whether he also speculates about the marital status of Ms Blueberry and says she's probably a lesbian who doesn't shave her armpits.

Doesn’t surprise me. We still live in a world where most people think a woman’s ultimate purpose in life is marriage and children and she has somehow “failed” as a human if she has mot achieved that. Hence why the title becomes such a big thing.

Two of my female friends are married (one with children) and neither use their husbands surnames nor wear wedding rings. It constantly surprises me that they both receive varying amounts of negativity for both those things.

JHound · 22/02/2025 17:23

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 21/02/2025 16:24

I'm loving the illogical argument that Ms is pretentious. To make sense of that , then so are all the others.

Yes I don’t quite get why “Ms” is pretentious but “Miss” and “Mrs” are not.

JHound · 22/02/2025 17:20

In terms of the vote - I wonder if it is people who are genuinely misogynistic and think women should be identified by their marital status

OR

people who think wrong title are no big deal as long as gender is correct.

I have met many a person who think shortening people’s names against their will, giving them unwanted nicknames, pronouncing their names incorrectly etc. is simply “no big deal” and I personally have experienced this attitude more from women so maybe that is what’s going on here.

I wonder what the results would have been if OP was “Mrs” but they kept using “Miss” in error and she wanted it corrected.

If the results would be the same then probably not sexism. If they would not be the same….well.

(Personally I don’t see the issue in asking for your contact details (including title) to be correct on your prescription info.)

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/02/2025 16:39

Growlybear83 · 22/02/2025 14:34

@MissScarletInTheBallroom You're very wrong in your sweeping judgement as far as I'm concerned, and most of my friends. I became a Mrs when I got married and it had nothing to do with it being 'a badge of pride'. I totally accept that a proportion of women choose not to change their name on marriage and fortunately we live in a country where people have the freedom of choice. I have no views whatsoever on the right or wrongs of using the title Ms, Mrs, or Miss - it is every woman's right to use whatever title she chooses and it is not for anyone to pass judgement on their choice. However, when a woman makes a choice about her title, it is then extremely rude for anyone who is aware of her choice not address her by a different title, and I feel it is just as rude as getting any other part of someone's name wrong. I have always been meticulous in checking how people I work with wish to be addressed and expect the same courtesy in return. It's nothing to do with feminism, it's just basic manners. And just because someone is a woman, it really doesn't make them a feminist.

If you accept other women's choice to use Ms and/or not change her name then you're not one of the women I'm talking about.
