Going on holiday with in-laws without kids

So I can't tell if this is weird or not, my sister is off on a ten day holiday with her husband and her in-laws for a couples holiday.

Don't get me wrong I can understand family holidays but her DH has several siblings and it's only the pair of them going, none of his siblings. Also understand holidays with grandparents but they were only married last year and no kids yet!

Has anyone else done this? I can't understand why she wouldn't just go on holiday with her DH.

YABU - Couples holidays with your in-laws sounds amazing
YANBU - It's not a holiday if your in-laws are there

I've done this with in laws - we had a great time!

Samung · 18/02/2025 16:30

Nice that they all appear to enjoy each other's company enough to do that. It's cynical to think that this automatically means the PIL's are paying. Maybe everyone just thinks it will be fun.

Jom222 · 18/02/2025 16:27

not everyone's in law are like my late FIL's 2nd wife, the devil incarnate. Its refreshing to hear of someone actually wanting to spend time away with their in laws.

Also as someone already commented, in laws almost certainly paid for the trip.

RaspberryBeretxx · 18/02/2025 16:22

I thought you meant they were leaving kids at home which seemed strange. But I think, given they don't have any kids yet, it's nice if they all get on and why not holiday together? I get on well with my parents and would do this if I didn't have kids (although not sure DP would be on board!).

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 18/02/2025 16:21

You’re looking for problems where they’re aren’t any. 4 adults who enjoy each others company go on holiday- not much of a headline!

MsBette · 18/02/2025 16:20

I invite my mother in law on hols with us, but not her husband (grumpy old man syndrome). We have a great time.

ItGhoul · 18/02/2025 16:18

Depends how well they get on and how much time they intend to spend together on the trip, surely?

I wouldn’t go away with anyone for 10 days, personally, even my best friends. But I don’t think it’s weird if other people do.

DP and I have twice been away for four or five days with my parents - my parents were staying in an apartment for two weeks and we flew out for five days and stayed with them. We didn’t have to pay anything for the accommodation and they were happy for us to use their hire car. We did different things during the day and just saw each other in the evenings. DP still talks about what a lovely time he had! But he’s always liked my parents and they’re not clingy or intrusive types.

Hubs and I have been on multiple holidays with my parents and my sister/her hubs. We're both childfree and love these holidays.

We've done some short breaks with my in laws, both before and after SIL had our neice. We enjoy those too. I really love my in-laws laws and the main reason we haven't done proper holidays with them is not wanting to pay school holiday prices! Plus they like to so AI and we don't, so it's a waste of money for us.

When neice gets older, hopefully we can do longer trips with them.

None of this is weird if you like the people you're going away with.

Sunnydiary · 18/02/2025 16:08

I’ve been on holidays several times with adult DC and their partners. No grandchildren.

Really enjoyable.

Dueanamechange2025 · 18/02/2025 16:04

We’ve been on holiday with the in laws but with and without the kids. They unfortunately didn’t pay for us either.

The main reason for us. Is they won’t go abroad alone so we sometimes invite them along with us. I didn’t realise this was weird.

Jayne35 · 18/02/2025 16:00

We go on holidays with the in laws, our kids are adults now but would have gone before too. They are good company and I enjoy spending time with them.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/02/2025 14:53

Me and my DH went on loads of holidays with my parents before we had kids. Didn’t think it was weird at all. I have two siblings who never came.

Rictasmorticia · 18/02/2025 14:52

I have been on holiday with my daughter and my sons with their partners on several occasions My children all work shifts so it is only big birthdays that we can include everyone. We are lucky that we get on really well and enjoy each other company.

Thirteenblackcat · 18/02/2025 14:49

Your title is misleading. So they don’t have any children is that correct? I read it as they had gone on holiday with in laws and left their children behind

YABU, not because I am dying g to get away with my in laws but because why not?

Boredlass · 18/02/2025 14:49

You do realise that some people actually like their in-laws. It’s only on Mumsnet that they are all narcissists

RawBloomers · 18/02/2025 14:46

It’s not for me. My MiL is a lovely woman but we don’t share the same outlook on life and I find too much time in her company a bit wearing (as does my DH, to be fair). My FiL is interesting to chat with some of the time but goes off by himself a lot). My brother used to go on holiday with his wife and her parents - my brother and her dad got on like a house on fire.

Longma · 18/02/2025 14:31

I can imagine Dd still coming away with us even if she got married, just bringing the husband along with her.
We enjoy spending time together so why not?!

tilypu · 18/02/2025 14:29

I've been on holiday with my daughter and her friend and his boyfriend. Is that also weird? 😂😂

Quitelikeit · 18/02/2025 14:25

Comparison is the thief of joy!!!

snowflakelake · 18/02/2025 14:24

We holidayed in the past with MIL predc, we paid.
They were fun trips and we were happy to share some time with her.
I wouldn't want it to be all we did but it was fine sometimes.

MammaTo · 18/02/2025 14:23

Because in the world outside of mumsnet, some people actually like their in laws.

PullTheBricksDown · 18/02/2025 14:14

I opened this thinking it was a couple with kids, who were holidaying with the in laws but NOT taking their kids / the grandchildren along. That would be weird. This is unusual but fine if they all get on and like the same kind of holiday. Problem usually is that people don't and holidays like this are purely for access to / a break from the (grand)children.

TheCatterall · 18/02/2025 14:13

I (50) and my partner have often gone on holidays with my folks in the last 10 years.

we enjoy there company. We aren’t glued at the hip on the holidays and do activities together and apart. Sometime we travel together and other times we meet up abroad.

Its a sad state of affairs when you can’t enjoy a parents company as humans in their own right.

Justcallmebebes · 18/02/2025 14:12

Eh? I often go away with DD and SIL and separately DS and DIL, often before kids came and now with kids. We actually like each other, consider ourselves family and see nothing odd at all

I know it's a rarity on MN, but families and in laws can get on and enjoy each other's company

Quite frankly I think it's none of your business.
