Not farting in front of DH

Not really an AIBU but I love hearing what others think!

Have been with my DH for 18 years and have never intentionally farted in front of him. I mean I know it’s impossible to hold every fart in but he’s never actually heard one! If I need to I would go in another room or be discreet. My mum and sister are the same and a couple of friends. Also my DH is the same and won’t in front of me unless he does by mistake!

I know it’s natural and everyone does it but I’d never want to endure someone’s else’s fart nor make them endure mine! It hardly makes you attractive does it! That being said I wouldn’t fart in front of anyone… I mean maybe the dog!

what do you think?!

I didn't fart in front of mine for 13 years. Then tore into my bum having our son, pooed myself in front of him multiple times in the following days and was unable to hold a fart for about 8 months. So I've more than made up for it! Thankfully I have had bum physio and can hold it now, so I'm back to being coy and going in the other room.

Hey, I didn't know bum physio was a thing!
I do practice pelvic squeezes, so is it something like that, but concentrating on a different set of muscles?
I wonder if there is an instructional YouTube vid'.....

Just a thought. I gave up wheat a couple of years ago. I simply don't need to clench any more. It has been transformative. The eczema disappeared, the bloating disappeared, the aches and pains disappeared - all along with the flatulence.

Sorry, I forgot to ask, how long after giving wheat up, did you start to notice the difference and benefits?

Wow, that's so interesting.
I can't see how it would be a coincidence, so I'm very impressed, and although I hate the idea of going wheat free, what you have experienced, is making me consider doing a trial.
Thank you.

I’ve never farted in front of my husband and we’ve been together for 30 years. i just think it’s a really unattractive thing to do. It helps that I’m not remotely windy.

MoonWoman69 · 17/02/2025 17:11

I worked with someone that could queef at will! That was her party trick!
We had some hilarious moments at work, (then I'd have some bollocking texts following that, for making her do it, as they were still making their way out while she was shopping in Morrisons!!!) 🤣🤣🤣
And try as I might and believe me, I tried, I could never get the hang of it!!

BettyBardMacDonald · 17/02/2025 16:45

* "*I agree it’s inappropriate to fart in the company of strangers and friends, but if you can’t feel comfortable enough with family to let it go there’s something seriously wrong with relationships here."

Comfortable enough to spew the particulate contents of your intestines at them? 🙄

No thanks. We believe in being at least as courteous and considerate with family as we are with friends and strangers, if not even more so. Being close and loving doesn't mean "let it all hang out with no dignity."

MrsTigerface · 17/02/2025 16:38

In our house, we proudly let rip, with the correct response from the fartee to the farter being along the lines of “Good arse, darling!” or similar.

It’s the only way.

No I definitely sweat and get BO! Again, I wear deodorant to try and hide this and wash regularly but some things you can’t help! Farting with intent you can!

Farting with intent? That’s a new one on me! How can someone fart with intent? the body builds up gas from the foods we eat, it has to come out, it’s a natural body function. Yes, I agree it’s inappropriate to fart in the company of strangers and friends, but if you can’t feel comfortable enough with family to let it go there’s something seriously wrong with relationships here.
We’re not piggish about it, I.E. we don’t see hilarity in rasping one off like some folk do, but we don’t feel ashamed or uncomfortable, we just say excuse me and apologise if it stinks.
As an IBS sufferer I’ve been in agony holding it in in the company of friends, I’d hate to think I had to do that all the time with close family.

But hopefully his cock doesn’t smell of shit?!

Unless they like a bit of anal-to-mouth?

I am the same op, would never intentionally fart in front of anyone, forcing someone else to breath in air that has just been in your arse seems rude to me.

They’re forced to breathe it in even if you do it silently

ArtTheClown · 17/02/2025 15:19

Is it just me whose farts rarely smell?

Ratisshortforratthew · 17/02/2025 15:02

My partner and I make up entire songs about our dog farting, with sound effects. I couldn’t be with someone who didn’t think they were funny!

Allornothing9 · 17/02/2025 15:00

BunnyLake · 17/02/2025 14:45

I could never do that in a million years but as long as you both find it funny then it doesn’t matter, at least no one’s getting offended.

Personally I couldn’t stay attracted to someone who freely farted regardless, for the laughs. It would be disrespectful for me but I know not everyone is the same.

Agreed, it gives me the ick. I couldn’t have sex with someone that did that for fun 🤢

meganorks · 17/02/2025 14:57

Farts are up there as one of my top 'are we compatible' requirements. I just don't think anyone can have a successful relationship if one parter thinks farts are funny and the other thinks they are disgusting and will never do them in front of their OH.

YouLookinSusBro · 17/02/2025 14:48

We're a free farting house, I have digestive issues and couldn't live with someone if I had to leave the room every time. Some days I'm extremely gassy, others not at all, very rarely smell though. A few years ago I had a mirena coil put in and for some reason this gave me excess violent wind every single day, it was a nightmare. I'd be sitting at work clenching while my bowel made terrible noises and the farts were hammering on the back door demanding to be let out. No chance of letting a silent one out as they were always long and loud, so I was constantly leaving the room to let rip otherwise I was in terrible pain, fortunately no smell. No idea what caused all the excess gas but it gradually stopped once the coil was removed. I could not have coped not feeling able to fart freely at home!

TheThreeMiracles · 17/02/2025 14:46

I fart in front of him I'd get really bad belly ache if I had to hold them in! Even farted on him before 😂

BunnyLake · 17/02/2025 14:45

Kittykittymeowmee · 17/02/2025 10:03

We do fart-offs... sometimes we position ourselves strategically!

I think it's strange if you're not comfortable enough to fart in your own home freely (when you're not with outside company of course).

I couldn't imagine either of us needing a fart and either holding it in or moving to a different room - that's not natural.

It’s not so much in your own home it’s in front of people. I just can’t do it in front of other people, not even my own kids.

Ratisshortforratthew · 17/02/2025 14:37

Imagine not finding farts funny. You have the same amount of farts in your life but less fun.

We are married 30 years and would be very considerate and respectful of each other.

It may happen occasionally but we would absolutely apologise.
I cannot fathom an open loo door.
Absolutely not.

I think reading on MN how disgusting some men are has made me apple my husbands wordless courtesies.

He would never use our ensuite for a number 2.
We were away for a few nights recently and I noticed how he would use the main loos downstairs of the gorgeous hotel rather than our shared room.
I think courtesies like that cement a marriage.

I remember how a poster on here wrote after years of bad behaviour, her husband doing a number 2 whilst she was in the bath, despite there being other loos, was the final nail in the coffin.

Agree. Every man I've ever been with has been similarly discreet.

BunnyLake · 17/02/2025 14:33

meganorks · 17/02/2025 14:10

Farts are funny. Its just a fact. If you can't fart in the comfort of your own home, then where can you?!

I’m not impressed when the dog does it, I’d be a lot less impressed by another adult doing it and an absolute no to a partner doing it deliberately. My 20yr does sometimes but I always say for god’s sake …. do you have to do that!

Weepixie · 17/02/2025 14:30

My eldest is now in his late 40’s and has never passed wind in front of any of us except for when he was a young teenager and he’d break wind then light it with a match just for the fun of it.

And come to think of it none of the rest of my children really do it in front of each other either.

I will admit to doing such an awful one in bed one night when unwell that it scared my husband so much he sat bolt upright in bed and tried to shoot it with imaginary guns made from his thumb and forefinger whilst shouting who’s there.

BunnyLake · 17/02/2025 14:29

I’m with you. I’ve never been one of those people who freely let rip when others, and god forbid, a partner, is in the vicinity. I won’t accept it from them either (not deliberate ones). I’m not the type to go to the loo accompanied by another adult either, which I know couples and mates do. It was how I was brought up.

BettyBardMacDonald · 17/02/2025 14:28

Panticus · 16/02/2025 20:31

I'm the same and so is my DH. I think you'll find we're in the minority on MN though, and a whole bunch of posters will probably show up to tell us how uptight we are and how shit our sex lives must be Hmm

We are the same. Never have, never will. Never been with a man who did it or who thought the topic was humorous.

EmeraldDreams73 · 17/02/2025 14:24

Wow. After a lifetime of digestive problems, I've had to explain to everyone I've ever lived with that I will likely fart more than them some days. I don't deliberately do it, but sometimes there's no choice or I'd simply never be in the same room as anyone else. Also, when you've struggled all day at work not to, it's nice to relax at home.

Dh and dds all fart when at home too but never in company or when out and about.
