I hate Sundays

mistymirror · 16/02/2025 09:59

I've always hated Sundays. Ever since I was a little girl I would just get this really heavy, sad feeling on a Sunday and I wondered if anyone else did/does?
I used to spend my weekends with my Dad as a child and he would take me home on a Sunday where I would cry because I missed him so much in the week so I'm not sure if this feeling has just stayed with me deep down and now Sundays are tainted for me. But I'm in my 30s now, married with children and there's no need for me to hate this day so much but I still do. Sunday is like a January for me. Anyone else feel the same or do I need therapy? 🙈

Gosh yes the Sunday night dread! And theme tunes that trigger it...
Antiques Roadshow
Songs of Praise
Heartbeat
London's Burning

all brought the dread of school or work the following day.

I don't mind Sundays now though. Kids are grown and have flown the next, DH retired (I still work part time). That dread has definitely gone! I now find the Antiques Roadshow and Call the Midwife theme tune rather comforting, I've survived another week and am anticipating the week ahead. The comfort of routine and the flow of time...

The Last of the Summer Wine theme always reminds me of boring Sundays too.

Haven't rtft, maybe half of it, but wanted to say that I love at least my Sunday mornings because of our lovely church, and gathering to worship Jesus.
I sometimes feel slightly anxious by the evening if work hasn't been going well, but otoh enjoy cooking Sunday tea.

Serpentstooth · 16/02/2025 22:49

Have a great week OP and an even better next weekend. Plan your Sunday, go out even just for a walk or window shopping. It will lift your spirits.

mistymirror · 16/02/2025 22:16

Thanks again everyone for all of your replies. It's so interesting reading about other people's Sundays - it's really brightened my Sunday night blues 😄
I decided to go swimming on my own this afternoon and actually it really helped shift my mood. I think it's also helped to know that I'm not alone in my Sunday feeling.

I was about to say Sing Something Simple too.

It's a contender to be in my Room 101. Their melancholy droning. I remember the Cliff Adams Singers mutilating Up Town Girl on one horrific occasion 😂

It was a good Sunday if you had an outing to a garden centre or the tip.

I struggled with lockdown because it was like being trapped in a tedious permaSunday for month after month.

I tend to start Sunday with getting out to junior parkrun which helps. If that's cancelled I feel really lost. I tend to go to the gym on a Sunday evening and that's something to look forwards to. I hate Sundays with nothing happening, and having an autistic teenager who likes doing nothing is not good for my need to get out and do stuff.

Saturdays have so much more energy. Sunday is like an awkward waiting room.

hattie43 · 16/02/2025 21:37

Sunday = my favourite day of the week . Totally indulgent and I do whatever I want with no guilt

Yoyokitten · 16/02/2025 21:35

I can relate to this feeling OP.
I'm old, so my memories were of Sing Something Simple on the radio followed by bath and bed.We only had a bath on Sunday.!!
The daytime was awful too.
We went to church 3 times every Sunday.
Morning service at 10.30, sunday school at 2 and Evensong at 6 30.
It was excruciating, plus the fact is was a mile walk each time, so a 6 mile walk.
I'm retired now and love Sundays.
It does get better.

ThatRareHazelTiger · 16/02/2025 21:30

I am totally the same. So glad it is not just me. I usually feel better if I have a plan for the day. Go into town/gym/list of jobs to do.
i remember also how shops used to be closed, hartbeat, snooker on the tele. Really dull stuff! Now I hate how the supermarket closes at 4pm!! Seems so archaic. There must be people wanting/needing the cash!

Goofy03 · 16/02/2025 21:19

Try some CBT to train your brain that you’re safe now and you’re not going to be abandoned on a Sunday.
Making plans and small indulgences will help too.

Whistledown2 · 16/02/2025 21:18

@Praying4Peace that's so sad, I'm so sorry for you. I do hope you find a solution with your son🙏🏼

Despise Sundays too. Takes me back to a lonely boring childhood.,

Cavalierchaos · 16/02/2025 21:16

I completely know what you mean. I don't work Mondays or Tuesdays anymore and I feel so much better these days.

Lovemybunnies · 16/02/2025 21:14

I like Sundays but I don’t like my birthday. When I was a teenager I had a boyfriend for several years who would be extra horrible to me on my birthday. I’m 50 now and I still hate them even though I have lovely family and friends. I sigh with relief at bedtime as I know it’s nearly over. I think you are probably right about your reason for disliking Sundays. I don’t know what either of us can do about it though.

PassingStranger · 16/02/2025 21:14

Thought it was Mondays, you weren't meant to like.

paddyclampster · 16/02/2025 21:11

I’m not a fan of them! The doom kicks in late afternoon.

As others have mentioned, I think it goes back to the days when nothing was open and Sundays were SO boring.

To this day, I get triggered if DH watches formula one cos the noise takes me back to boring Sunday afternoons!

I don’t mind them quite as much nowadays but I’d rather have the buzz of Friday over the Sunday night feeling!

RM2013 · 16/02/2025 20:44

I used to feel the same about Sundays as a child. Was always the same routine. As an adult I remember hating Sundays and feeling down almost as soon as I woke up knowing my weekend was coming to an end. This changed slightly when I started doing shift work as had no regular pattern to my working days. However I soon became very envious of those that had weekends off with their families.
fortunately I’ve changed my working hours and generally have Fridays off so I’m lucky to have a 3 day weekend. Sundays don’t feel quite so bad now. Mondays however 😞

Drylogsonly · 16/02/2025 20:38

I did as a child/teen because they were boring. But now - I have a hobby that I do, mostly in Sundays, and if that’s not on I make Sunday my cinema day… or pub day with friends.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 16/02/2025 19:31

Sunday is my cleaning day before another working week so it's either very depressing or very productive depending on my mood.

I hated Sunday as a child still remember year 7 and the antiques roadshow tune/songs of praise boredom plus the dread of Monday where it seemed all my worst lessons were.
Spring term that year (so freezing cold January) we had swimming first lesson. Which I wasn't good at. Maths next and needlework. Bad at it all!

Monday night was great though. All the awful stuff over with. The Minder theme tune signalling the end of the dread day.

So I did hate Sunday and still do sometimes. Always have a bad night s sleep too.

Grapewrath · 16/02/2025 19:17

I understand OP. I didn’t have happy childhood and Sundays were awful being trapped inside with my parents, domestic abuse and a shit roast. I also hated my school so the Sunday scaries were really.
I remember being happy when shops started opening and I was a teenager- o could actually get out of the house.
As an adult, I love Sunday. I still get that collective low vibe but I make myself get up early and have the house clean and tidy, go for a swim, gym or walk and come back to cook a nice dinner. I also like doing the washing on a Sunday randomly 🤣, getting sorted for the week and a nice long bath.
I think you have to make a real effort to get a routine going and consciously make your day different to when you were a child/teen

JaneBoleynViscountessRochford · 16/02/2025 19:13

Same I can’t have it on my TV, hate it.

I have always hated Sundays apart from when I was a student and worked them every week, I always loved working Sundays to stop it feeling like a Sunday! Then I got a normal Monday - Friday job and had kids and I am back to hating them, I don’t even think it’s work because I’m off tomorrow and I’m still feeling the Sunday hate.

Mumteedum · 16/02/2025 18:59

Haha my Dad was in finance so my depressing theme tune is the money programme 😱

It was sooooooo boring too.

Norugratsatall · 16/02/2025 18:57

I used to hate Sundays too, especially as a child. I always got that feeling of dread.

For me it changed when having a child. I try to make the most of them now, and whilst it will never be my favourite day of the week, I no longer get that sense of dread anymore. I cherish the time to catch up with family/friends, or some nice long walks. Winter is always harder too, for me is much easier when we can get outside more.

MadeInYorkshire69 · 16/02/2025 17:06

I used to loathe the anxiety that Sunday brought, mostly I think because I hated my job and got the scaries from about 3pm onwards.
It’s better now, but I don’t think the dreary weather we are having right now is helping. It’s too cold to go out and do stuff, plus where I live we have dreaded “rail replacement buses” so going anywhere is a challenge on a Sunday.

Everyst · 16/02/2025 16:52

Antique roadshow is so depressing to me that I can’t stand the noise.

Funkyslippers · 16/02/2025 16:50

Now that my kids are older and I don't have to think of things to entertain then I love Sundays. It's often my only chance for a lie in, tend to go for a walk and/or coffee with dd2, and a chance to relax. Just do little things to make you happy otherwise you're just wasting the time being miserable just because of the name of the day
