... to ask you to practise parking it in a single space? Saturday afternoon in the town multistorey and the number of huge cars parked half in a second space is 🤯

Living in the country is a pathetic excuse for being selfish.

Have you experienced the pot-holes in most country B roads and back lanes. Are family moved from sensible sized hatchbacks to 4x4 after destroying the engine in when it hydrolocked in a 15cm flood (doing around 10 mph) caused by the drains being blocked and the front suspension in a 2nd after hitting a water-filled pot-hole at 30 mph.

Quite frankly the two replacements are stupidly big but at least they can travel on the roads we have around here.

40-60k does not buy you a newish RR.

Best take up 3 spaces horizontally then, just to be extra sure it’s safe.

Jaywalking is not allowed in the US, so backing into pedestrians in the road isn't likely to happen. People tend to reverse very cautiously out, and the angled parking makes seeing what's coming much easier. Plus, so many cars have cameras, it really isn't a dangerous maneuver where angled parking is concerned (though the cameras make it easier to back into perpendicular spaces too). Finally, the US is a litigious society, and failing to exercise caution when you're backing out of a parking spot can really backfire on the driver. If you drive recklessly, you also risk having to surrender your license and paying a hefty fine to get it back. The vast majority of people drive carefully and are not jerks.

The US has a huge mortality rate per 100,000 population for car accidents though - broadly 10x that of the UK, and over double that of Canada and Australia. For a developed country it’s quite high, if not at the top.

Anecdotally, it’s also the only place I’ve ever had an Uber driver openly flicking through Instagram whilst in moving traffic 😳

Agree re Oklahoma et all parking. We stopped walking between the shops after a while as everything was so spread out and the roads so wide that it took ages to get a few things. We could see why those in the know car jumped.

I will have to disagree though on reversing into a parking spot. It is always safer than reversing out into oncoming cars and pedestrians walking about and is recommended.

Architect here, we also develope.
None of my white van men/ women ever arrive with a full van of stuff as I supply all materials and most of their equipment too.( lots of clients supply materials ) I really don’t know why they need their vans, they could easily jump on the tube, train or bus

Tbh unless you have your van stacked to the top there’s no need for them. Haven’t you ever noticed how everything (if anything) is low level, the spaces are never filled. Well not in my too long experience.

The only tradespeople I know that need their space are gardeners and tree cutters ( ? ). They have quite big machines in the back of their vans!

So you see.
We don’t all live the same lives and

They like to use their own tools, ime. And also, they probably don't all like traipsing from the nearest bus stop or train station to the site, perhaps having to use several buses or trains to get to work and then home again, or on to their side job.

How did people who lived rurally cope in the past, before SUVs?

People had larger families back then too.

And you can't fit put cows and sheep into an SUV.

An aunt of mine (a farmer) had an SUV in the late 70s. My grandfather drove his tractor on the country roads, sometimes pulling loads of hay or milk churns, but also just to get from point A to point B. He also had a car, but it didn't have the flexibility or clearance of the tractor. He couldn't easily check the fields as he drove past either, in the car.

People didn't have to put children in car seats up to the age of 12 back in the day. Those things take up space. I remember sitting in the boot of an estate car that was packed with ten classmates, heading to a party at about age 6. I don't remember the car having seat belts. We often gave three or four neighbourhood kids a lift to school in a car that would probably have accommodated four adults.

You can definitely put sheep in an SUV. You fold down the back seats or take them out altogether and use a couple of planks for them to walk up.

These threads always trigger bonkers generalisations like this 😂 is it jealousy? Insecurity? Not sure. Funny though.

Surely nobody thinks anyone is jealous of their car? What an utterly bizarre thing to think. You can’t possibly belive that, surely.

theprincessthepea · 16/02/2025 01:18

I’m actually very good at parking, and driving in general if I do say so myself. I always parked in the line when I had my mini car, and when I got a family car I do the same! Even if it means I have to hop out and check then hop back in again. Then again I’ve driven vans in the past so I have practice.

Sorry but if you struggle to drive a big car (and I see it so much) - then downsize - get a car that you can park and that you can drive. Stop being a nuisance.

4 wheel drives were introduced in 1949 .( military vehicles before then )
A lot of People couldn’t afford them of course so walked everywhere. There would have been more local village shops and schools though.
As pp have noted SUVs are needed to pull horse boxes and around here they also pull hay carts ( tractors as well ) and sheep carts.

Im guessing prior to cars they used horse and carts,

SUVs should be banned outright. There is no reason for them to exist.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 16/02/2025 00:22

Mine is an suv but not a 4x4.

Thise smaller cars are no good for getting wheelchairs in, I bought my car deliberately so I could help care for a dear friend who unfortunately died recently. Her chair would not go in anything smaller, believe me I tried.

However, I can park it.

Those posters saying spaces aren't bug enough are correct though.it is a well known fact that the car parks are designed with 1980'scars in mind and not current ones. There are some multistorey near me where you would be hard pushed to get a mini in the spaces as they are so bloody narrow

Even worse.
The parking standards date back to the 1970s

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 16/02/2025 00:22

bravefox · 15/02/2025 14:53

I'm sorry I simply don't accept this. There are more, smaller, cars available then every before. If you purchase a giant car that's your choice. None of the cars I saw today was out the space on both sides.

JJZ · 16/02/2025 00:17

I love my 4x4. I park very considerately though, always in the lines and always reverse park because it’s safer, especially with such a huge vehicle.

JJZ · 16/02/2025 00:15

Wordau · 15/02/2025 14:46

They're too big for single spaces a lot of the time.

They're too big full stop.

Fucking ridiculous for city dwellers to have these wanky child killing machines.

If you have one, I judge you.

And what if you live rurally, own livestock etc, use the SUV to do the school run…

Plantatreetoday · 16/02/2025 00:13

I think given the issue with

  • bad parking, across drivers irrespective of vehicle choice
  • larger vehicles
  • larger people
  • increased mobility issues
We should just enlarge all parking bays. They did it when building Bluewater shopping centre…….of course that’s a lot more tarmac 🤢
Whammyyammy · 16/02/2025 00:07

Lemsipper · 15/02/2025 14:35

Thats why I normally just park in the adult & child bays! (Despite no child) its not easy parking this beast 😜

And me. We have a huge pick up for husbands moto cross bikes. Only fit in parent and child bays.

Plantatreetoday · 16/02/2025 00:03

and Luckily they all arrived on foot 😁 @AnSolas
although I do have a very large glove compartment if the need arises 🤣

I think people who spend 40-60k on a car genuinely believe they have the right to inconvenience other people so it doesn’t get damaged.

I drive a fucking builders van and manage to park it quite sensibly.

40-60k does not buy you a newish RR.

hattie43 · 15/02/2025 22:46

LillyPJ · 15/02/2025 14:55

I think it's a shame people buy them in the first place. I suspect it's just because they like to look down on other people.

Literally . They are higher / taller than other cars .

hattie43 · 15/02/2025 22:44

Spacehoppersrule · 15/02/2025 14:46

I never, ever park in a multi storey because the spaces are always too small. And it’s often too tight going up and around the stupid ramp things. Wish they’d build them bigger.

This . Even Waitrose has ridiculously small spaces and they should bf used to us .

Coatsoff42 · 15/02/2025 22:42

Spacehoppersrule · 15/02/2025 22:33

I assume it’s the same if pedestrians or cyclists are hit by a bus? Are the people that use those selfish too?

What do you think? I think not. Buses go pretty slowly, the drivers are well trained, etc.

it’s hard to think of a good environmentally friendly mass transport option better than a bus, but it’s easy to think of a better car than a 4x4. I know tonnes of people with them for no particular reason, they just want one. I think they’re all selfish and keep my mouth shut about it. It’s their choice to buy them, I think less of them.

Plantatreetoday · 15/02/2025 22:42

Bubblyb00b · 15/02/2025 22:00

Believe it or not, also an architect and someone who is often on site. Never question tradespeople using vans, it would simply be massively unreasonable as I actually know how builders operate - they prefer using their own tools, and their vans are basically their offices full paperwork, drawings, and everything they might need during the day. Some builders do travel by tube, you can see them in their caulk covered jeans with hard hats in hand. But most simply can't carry it all in a backpack.

You can't compare it with a mum driving her darlings to a private school though Oxford Street in a massive G-wagon, being annoyed there are people she has to watch out for.

Edited

I wasn’t comparing.
I was noting why some people can or can’t leave their cars outside town and take public transport in.
Some can, some can’t …. I was using vans as an example because they are often not filled up with stuff and yet many still drive into town. The roads are full of them going in and out of London for example.

Of note and as an aside
White van men use the drawings on site. On , at least, large building projects they aren’t carrying them around in the back of their vans and if they are ( as a personal copy ) then they’ll be reduced in size or on iPads etc. they really aren’t taking up that much space.
( The use of paper drawings these days is rare in case they don’t update and end up using out of date ones so we’d never allow it anyway ) but that’s a derail.

PS
I wasn’t personally discussing town dwellers using 4x4s or any cars for that matter,
