What will happen when the thousands of sacked US federal workers have no wages this month?

Thousands dismissed. Can someone explain why this is a good thing? There aren't jobs for them to fill. Maybe it'll be fire and re-hire? Surely they can't have prevented their military from being paid? That would be a very bad idea.

No I don't. But nobody is owed a professional job. Many industries over time have massively shed workers and those people had to move on. I'm not sure it's any worse for civil servants in a massively bloated service than it was for miners or manufacturers.

So you would be perfectly happy to lose your job in a system that requires you and your family to have health insurance and stability to pay your rent / mortgage and swap that for a less than minimum wage car wash job?

Reading this article it seems they were let go with immediate effect.

And then a few days later someone high up eventually realised that Nuclear Safety Engineers did a pretty essential job so now they are trying to contact all these staff?

It really is the epitome of stupid. You couldn't make this up!

There are quite a few posts popping up on social media from scared people who voted for Trump because they thought he meant everyone else except them. Some of them have been in government jobs for years and have quite limited skills, so they are going to find it really hard to find any similar work.

InWalksBarberalla · 18/02/2025 08:07

Not sure I considered civil servants that skilled. At least I'm not proposing to machine gun them.

RayonSunrise · 18/02/2025 07:57

It's an indictment of how a country is doing if it cuts skilled jobs and funnels its skilled workforce into unskilled jobs. All very Khmer Rouge, but I guess if you're into class-war-at-all-costs @InWalksBarberalla that would seem very appealing.

You think illegal immigrants are taking up professional jobs?

One wonders what on earth they are thinking.

Purely how to enrich themselves. It's painful to watch.

BettyBardMacDonald · 18/02/2025 07:51

I just read that Yosemite and their other national parks aren't taking reservations for the 2025 season as so many park workers have been laid off.

Closing those huge tourist destinations is going to adversely affect numerous local economies in the states.

One wonders what on earth they are thinking. Especially since the lion's share of the US debt was created by trump giving tax cuts to billionaires. Not routine spending.

There's heaps of jobs in the US, and there will be even more if they deport all the illegal immigrants.

Immigrants do the shitty jobs noone else wants to do. Just like in the UK.....

Yeah, all those jobs in meat processing, or as agricultural and construction labour in the hot sun. No doubt all the "real Americans" will be flocking to apply. 🙄

TheKeatingFive · 18/02/2025 07:42

They're on paid leave til September.

But regardless, people lose jobs everyday and have to get new ones. Redundancies are nothing new.

QueefofSheena · 18/02/2025 07:42

Lots of large (peaceful) protests in US yesterday. Very little reporting anywhere. It’s pretty much a silent coup.

Drylogsonly · 18/02/2025 07:36

A wake up call would be good, though am not too optimistic. As as usual the rich will be fine, they can afford not to use a lot of public services.

Gingernaut · 15/02/2025 11:09

Although many of the fired workers have paid contracts, with specific Ts&Cs regarding firing them, Musk has made a promise/offered a particular redundancy package which supercedes their contracts

Musk has form for saying one thing, promising another and shafting employees

Many Twitter employees left with little or no notice and no redundancies

USA has got the Government it voted in. Must be awful for all the decent, intelligent, more thoughtful, caring, responsible members of the population who are having their lives changed, but it’s the USA’s problem. Sadly the rest of the World has to sit out another few years until a decent option comes along. Fingers crossed nothing really bad kicks off globally. How anyone could vote for Trump beggars belief really, but hey ho, all you need in USA to become President is huge wealth. Morals, decency, honour, intelligence……nah, none of that stuff required. The clowns are in charge of the circus. Going by the state of both him and Biden, they perhaps need to consider putting an age limit on taking up office as well. Some of us remember Reagan’s last term, he was hardly functioning by the end……cup cake anyone?

Adelstrop · 15/02/2025 10:51

I’ve never felt so grateful to live in this damp little island as I have since Trump gained power. The comparison with Dominic Cummings is so pertinent - in his case it ended in farce, with Musk, it looks like tragedy.

Whammyyammy · 15/02/2025 10:50

Got what they voted for I suppose. Turkeys and Christmas

mitogoshigg · 15/02/2025 10:47

They had to immediately leave the premises but legally they are on paid leave pending the paperwork being done then will get severance in line with whatever is agreed. The second wave of firings was put fully on hold pending a court case

BigDecisionWorthIt · 15/02/2025 10:45

With most jobs/companies health insurance won't commence until the probationary period is complete.

So those who were let go whilst in their probationary period would not have had any employer sponsored health insurance.

For workers past probation, employers set the guidelines for their own health insurance sponsorship. So in most cases it'll expire either on the employees last working day or at the end of the month that the employee stopped working.

Musk is doing what Dominic Cummings wanted to do here. Unachievable here, thank god, given the independence of the Courts, which is not the case in US. Disgruntled ex-employees here in UK would have been protected from a rogue government to a great extent. Has Cummings still got influence with the Republican party? Is he involved in this? Or did Elon think it all up alone?

Um...

Per the BBC News website, 11th December 2024
"Savings targets could cost 10,000 civil service jobs"
