to put rubbish in public bins because it won't fit in the wheelie bin?

I have a lot of rubbish despite recycling as much as possible. I have a DC with SEN and an eating disorder so have to buy a lot of packet food that comes with all the wrappings.

I am not entitled to a bigger bin. The wheelie bin used to be bigger which worked well but they have changed it to half the size and it is only collected every two weeks.

The bin fills up very quickly so the only way I can manage is to put the rubbish in public bins. I can't get to the tip as it is too far away and I have no one to look after DC who can't be left alone.

I occasionally do this, it’s never large amounts though and the bin is very close to my house

Agapornis · 16/02/2025 20:02

I used to work at a nature reserve run by a charity, where either staff or volunteers would empty the bins. There were two bins that were consistently used by a couple of people for household waste and cat litter. Super annoying.

If you're using public bins, at least make sure they're actually emptied by the council service whose only job is to empty bins. Total waste of time and money for charities and park services.

RandomMess · 16/02/2025 20:02

@Relaxaholic how do you do that if you don't have a car? It's certain not affordable to have to pay for that service.

Hcs1985 · 16/02/2025 19:59

Our local council allows you to buy an extra recycling or general waste bin (they are relatively cheap £20ish) and are then collected as normal- would this be an option to explore?

Relaxaholic · 16/02/2025 19:56

It’s fly tipping and it is antisocial. Just visit the tip on the weekend. Problem solved.

Achyarms · 16/02/2025 19:51

Is it recycling or landfill you have too much of?soft plastic goes to the supermarket
hard plastic in your recycling, if you have too much you can get an extra recycling bin

TunipTheVegimal24 · 16/02/2025 19:51

YANBU at all, but make sure you've got no bills or anything that identifies you in there as you can get fined.

Where I live, there aren't enough bin collections, and people just chuck bags of rubbish all over the place. Not public bins, just anywhere there's space. It's properly grim.

SisSuffragette · 16/02/2025 19:50

Unfortunately, it is fly tipping.
Can't you take the kids in the car to the tip once a week with a boot full of rubbish? We need to do this sometimes, particularly around christmas time

GreenFields07 · 16/02/2025 19:49

We are a family of 5, our paper bin is also only collected once a month (like the rest of the country). We very rarely overflow, I don't understand how a 2 person household can be creating so much rubbish / recycling.
Maybe have a look at what youre buying and the packaging its in, id be rethinking certain items if they are creating so much rubbish.
Also, don't understand why you cant go to the tip with your DC sat in the car? Iv been to multiple tips and they all let you reverse right upto the bins. Its not like you'd be going miles and leaving them alone.

SandieWooz · 16/02/2025 19:46

How often is your recycling and rubbish collected?
Ours is collected alternate weeks and food waste collected weekly.

RebeccaRedhat · 16/02/2025 19:41

We didn't reach the criteria for a bigger wheelie bin, but I emailed and asked for it anyway, due to the volume of recycling we do. We got it.

Botanybaby · 16/02/2025 19:31

Why can't you take the kids to the tip too??

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/02/2025 18:11

rubbwubb · 15/02/2025 11:14

I am not entitled to a bigger bin but thank you.

OP, have you specifically asked for another / bigger recycling bin - and not general waste?

RandomMess · 15/02/2025 14:27

We had to pay but now have wheelie bins for recycling rather than small useless boxes.

MicroMallow · 15/02/2025 13:35

we all do this round here the bins are full of black bags of rubbish. i do it all the time. fortnightly collections aren't enough for us (family of 5) i take rubbish to the public bins a few times a week so do others as i always spot others doing it

spuddy4 · 15/02/2025 13:29

Our council collects recycling every week and non recyclable waste every 3 weeks so it's created a huge problem with people using public bins and they are clamping down on it and prosecuting for fly tipping.

I see both sides of the argument but I do agree that something has to be done to stop it because in our car park (supermarket where I work) it's a huge problem and people are dumping all sorts of rubbish, especially around the clothing donation bins and it's an eyesore for everyone.

Mynewnameis · 15/02/2025 11:43

Are you sure you can't get extra recycling bin?
We take soft plastics to supermarket and it does make a difference but is a bit of a pain.

I'd try a request for a bigger bin based on special needs.

Are any neighbours willing to give a bit of space? My neighbour helps us out when we run out of room for various reasons.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/02/2025 11:38

Do you have a garden compost bin? Some shredded cardboard and paper can go in that mixed with garden waste and veg peelings.

Aldi have soft plastic bins here. Maybe yours does?

Any rubbish you put in the street bins should look like the stuff you'd have when out and about...

Make sure you pack recycling as efficiently as possible...eg stacks of the same sized grape cartons etc.

If you put things in vertically you can fit more in.

Some years ago my grandfather used to do this, until he received a summons for flytipping. He had to go to court (presumably magistrates - don't remember the details) and received a fine. He didn't create much rubbish, and dropping a small bag in the bin when he went for his daily paper in his mind saved him putting the bins out... We had been warning him about it for ages!

Oh bless him! What an absolute waste of the court's time.

Definitely get into crushing. Are there particular items you feel are the worst for taking up space? Tins, bottles, ready meals containers, tetra packs? A good stamp with a boot can help. Or keep a stack of similar trays and nest them. I run hot water into bottles, flatten then and then put the lid back on to keep it from expanding again.

Is there anything you can take to the recycling banks at supermarkets?
This must be such a drag when you already have a lot to contend with.

I am trying to get rid of some packaging while I am still at the supermarket. I unpackage some items and leave the rubbish there.

I don't go to Sainsbury's much as too expensive but I have recycled packaging there too.

Call your local council and ask if they have a larger bin size. There are two sizes, the standard and slightly bigger. As you have somewhat of a medical need.

The majority of food packaging is now recyclable so double check all of it is definetly non recyclable. Also worth looming at composting for food waste. Join a local FB page and ask if anyone with an allotment would like the composting.

I am not entitled to a bigger bin but thank you.

BarbedButterfly · 15/02/2025 11:13

I sympathise. Our local council still doesn't take a lot of stuff that should be recyclable as they haven't upgraded facilities or something and tell everyone to put it with normal waste. I end up paying a man to take it away but double check that they are licensed as some just flytip

Vitriolinsanity · 15/02/2025 09:21

I can assure you that if there is a camera or ring doorbell anywhere nearby you'll get done for fly tipping.

Haven't done in the last 5 years or so but thank you.

Check your packaging, because most supermarkets now have to make soft plastics.
