Labour have ruined the job market

Needajobforspouse · 14/02/2025 20:55

My spouse was made redundant in November, has done some bid work since then (e.g zero contract parcel delivery) but not enough to make up his old salary. He has job alerts and this week there was ZERO jobs advertised that meet his qualifications.

Nobody is hiring.

I work for an SME, and I am also at risk and in bad health. Not enough for PIP etc but enough to make me unreliable (recently diagnosed as immunocompromised).

Not even the local supermarket is hiring, and they won’t touch my DH anyway as he is massively over qualified (I know a supermarket manager and they don’t take on over qualified people as they are “hard to manage” and don’t stay long term.).

yesterday our car broke and we used the last of our savings for a new one, my roof is leaking. My bay window is leaking and I just feel like giving up.

just dreading this year of shitty government policies that pick on the middle income earners and penalise us, is this life? Because if so I hate it.

also where are all the jobs?! Literally zero here in northern England.

In the last month
local animal charity redundancy of manager and no replacement of staff leaving
my friends son working in sales all of the recent intake not taken on
my friend 2.5 household staff £16k extra a year in tax and NI
25 preps closing resulting in large redundancies
I applied for 50 local jobs two interviews whereas before I would of been hired first interview
national event organiser 50 years established closed
these are all direct results of Labour mismanaging the economy
Im sure I’ll think of more

Were you asleep the last 14 years? Tory underfunding across all services- NHS, education, police, councils….. cut everything to the bone. Then chuck in Brexit on top which was also entirely their own making. Thinking putting all that right is going to be a picnic is laughable. It’s going to be tough, get used to it.

Labour aren’t putting it right, they’re making it worse!

taxguru · 15/02/2025 08:17

My son’s firm take on a few hundred graduates each year and a similar number on one year uni placements, he was one of them two years ago. This Summer’s intake will be just a couple of dozen of each. His immediate dept is getting one - when he started 2 years ago, he was one of about 25 who started together. The nic hike is killing the job market!

I thought the council tax rise was to make up for the cuts in funding experienced this last decade or so?

Exactly this! We will be very lucky if we ever see a council tax rise of less 4.99% ever again. I can't see how any council could balance their budget without it

It’s very frustrating to read through many of these comments on here. MN is predominantly a labour biased group, who, for many years have been desperate for a chance in government. They now have this beloved Labour administration and can’t bare to admit what a poor job Rachel from accounts is doing.

As you can guess, I’m a traditional Conservative voter, but I didn’t vote for them last time round, they had made such a mess of things, mainly due to their loss of direction and infighting. Having said that though, it takes someone pretty special to come into power and make such a mess of things as we are seeing playing out in front of us. Statistically the worst incoming government in recent history. Even Labour led councils are citing the 4.99% council tax rises on the ‘unexpected’ rise in employer NI. You couldn’t make it up……
Now, I await the MN backlash telling me just how wrong this far right extremist is 😂.

Could he re-train? the problem is that jobs like marketing and sales are not skilled, and therefore you are potentially going to find it difficult to get new job.

PurBal · 15/02/2025 06:53

If you work in the independent schools sector it is 100% because of Labour. VAT (that can't be passed onto parents because they simply can't afford it), NI, NMW, business rates. All the independent schools in the area are going through redundancies and in my town the school is the largest employer.

Firenzeflower · 15/02/2025 06:48

Labour have made me put on 8 pounds and hidden my house keys.

Baconking · 15/02/2025 06:48

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/02/2025 21:38

I agree @Needajobforspouse . Labour have certainly killed the market for many entry level roles as the increases in minimum wage/NI mean that someone like an apprentice / entry level will cost a business the same as someone with 5 years’ experience. So of course they will choose the person with 5 years’ experience.

One of my friends is the co-owner of a big name multi-award winning hair salon and he said that all the salons are cutting apprentice schemes. People may not see the difference now but they will in 3 years time when there are no apprentices coming through the pipeline. He expects hair salon prices to rise significantly then (so long term actually good for his business as there’ll be a shortage of hair stylists but terrible for employment).

I didn't think employers paid NI for under 21s or apprentices under 25 but I may be wrong

bozzabollix · 15/02/2025 06:39

I voted YABU because Brexit has had a huge impact on the economy and will continue to stifle growth so long as we have it. It’s been so damaging. Doesn’t matter which government we have so long as we’re cut off.

Sorry to hear about your husbands job, something will turn up.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 15/02/2025 06:32

Lambington · 15/02/2025 01:58

Yabu. You can't. Blame the government for everything. Certain sectors will contract , others will expand. The economy is generally stable and areas which are needed will do well. Others won't. People make their choices and need to live with them.

You are not really up to date with what is currently happening are you.

Smok3Scr33n · 15/02/2025 06:12

Job market was slowing long behind Labour took over thanks to Brexit. I know because my husband was made redundant. Said husband is 60 and has just got a new job in a competitive field.

MooFroo · 15/02/2025 05:14

You Both sound well skilled so look at freelance and consulting work.

lots of marketing jobs are remote and you can be based anywhere so get DH to market himself and bring in work. People have earned millions from online work boards and it gives him control of his work

Go out and look for or create the work - plenty of it still out there and not all been taken over by AI yet!!

Meadowfinch · 15/02/2025 05:03

Op, I have sympathy. My employer is profitable but has cancelled all recruitment because of the NI raise. Unfortunately Marketing is always the first thing companies cut back on because it is a cost centre rather than a profit centre. My brother is a company accountant and they will have to pay an extra £200,000 a year in NI in a price sensitive market. They can't raise prices so they are cutting jobs too.

On the other hand you could manage your funds better by not buying a new car, but repairing the old one or buying a cheap little secondhand car.

Can your dh look at fixing the roof and the leaking window. Has he been up and checked the slates? Has he checked for perished sealant on the windows?

If your DH has skills & experience, he will find another job but it may take time. I also work in marketing, was made redundant during covid, aged 57 and it took 7 months of searching every job board daily, dozens of interviews but I got there in the end.

The coming six months will be difficult so steel yourself and encourage him the best you can. Ask him to help support your health, doing more housework and cooking you healthy fresh food every day with masses of fruit &veg, improving your diet and allowing you to rest more.

Work as a team. You will be ok.

beardednotlady · 15/02/2025 04:42

You do realise that Labour haven't been in power for very long? They picked up the mess from the Conservatives including Brexit!

Savoury · 15/02/2025 04:02

No doubt the business tax changes are hurting the economy. Sentiment is very poor among the SME community especially.

The tech world is also on its knees as a lot of jobs are disappearing with new ways of working: PM, infrastructure, transformation. The new skills are very different and there aren’t as many of them.

OneLemonDog · 15/02/2025 03:50

HoskinsChoice · 14/02/2025 23:54

I'm astounded at how blinkered people are about politics. Recruitment has literally fallen off a cliff since Labour came to power. There are many, many international developments that impact our economy but this is not one of them. I say this as a Labour voter - the Recruitment market dropped off almost over night after the election. This is not '14 years of Torys' or global issues, this is absolutely on Labour and they need to sort it very, very quickly!

But what you're saying doesn't seem to match the data, though?

Barleysugar86 · 15/02/2025 03:15

Needajobforspouse · 14/02/2025 21:00

The main reason I am at risk or and my DH has been made redundant is because of the NI increases; small to medium firms can’t just absorb that cost without making changes to staffing

But this wasn't Labour really- the Conservatives did something very sneaky this year when it became obvious that they weren't going to be in power much longer- they reduced the NI rate for employees from 12% to 10% in January 2024, and then to 8% in April 2024. It wasn't supported by these vital funds coming from elsewhere. They knew it would be popular (less tax!) and it would screw over the incoming party when they had to put it back to the level that it actually needs to be at to try and balance the books.

If anything I'd say it's played out exactly as the Conservatives were planning, and I'd lay the blame for any impacts to the job market at their door.

On the other hand we haven't personally found it any different job market wise. My husband had a long period of unsuccessfully looking for work (8 months) and secured a role just before Christmas. His Company have also just released an additional new-to-the-business role in his team this week, so are still growing their workforce.

Yalta · 15/02/2025 02:51

Labour might have only been in power 8 months but that makes it all the more dire. With a Budget that didn’t seem to understand the consequences of raising taxes from businesses was going to negatively affect a lot of the working population especially in certain sectors and all the other damage they have caused

If this is what they have achieved in 8 months just imagine the state of the country in 48 months

LBFseBrom · 15/02/2025 02:46

The current government has only been in power for a few months, the economy was in a state before that, we can't blame them for everything.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/02/2025 02:36

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/02/2025 23:04

Sainsbury have closed their cafes to increase retail space. This is why staff have been made redundant. But it’s easier to blame the government. However this isn’t the reason.

The cafe near me is upstairs. No retail space there. Still closed. Companies are reducing jobs across the board.

HappiestSleeping · 15/02/2025 02:26

colinthedogfromaccounts · 14/02/2025 21:52

I am sorry your DH is struggling to find work.

Not sure you can blame Labour - they have only been in power 8 months. I suspect Brexit, The Tories and the pandemic are more likely suspects.

PS - I am not a labour supporter.

This 👆

My last contact finished in 2022, and because of Brexshit, there's been nothing since, as so many jobs were moved abroad. I've had to completely retrain and start my own business to create an income. It's a struggle.

Oh this too! Though it's kind of catch 22 as using chat gpt is a lifesaver for applying for roles when you now have to submit on average over 100 tailored CVs/Cover Letters/Application questions before finding a role 🫠

So as a job hunter it's great! (As long as you're not an idiot and don't just copy/paste) ~ as a current manager who's recruiting it sucks 😂

ive been using it to improve my cv vs the role i want to apply for, i understand the need for details but some companys expect war and peace type application just to then go, computer says no, where as other companies on eg indeed, its click to apply upload cv and then its completed,

that said i copy the role description and then get ai to rewrite my experience to see if it matches then highlight the most important skills to match the description, but i do have to tone down the words used as it tends to oversell my skills with fancy words
