Going all out for your kids on valentines day

Seriously when did that become a thing! Tonight I’ve been told it’s ’on me’ that I feel guilty because it’s splashed all over my social media feeds about the efforts parents have gone to, balloons, presents, cakes, breakfasts for their children on Valentine’s Day?

Like AIU to think it shouldn’t be another thing to pressure parents into feeling guilty? Like the elf and so on!!

The thing is it’s never too early to teach kids about subjects that matter and will help them to be a healthy minded, healthy bodied and responsible adult.

Things like healthy eating, looking after the environment, over buying wasteful products and animal welfare can all be taught in an age appropriate way.

Lots of people would rather go down the wasteful route and live a social media life or create lots of cheap dopamine hits for their kids.

It’s ok do what suits your family and your goals in life. We don’t have to say yes to every trend or everything on sale.

We bought our child a 90p bag of chocolate love heart coins and a card and he was made up. He made a card at nursery.

starsinthedarksky · 15/02/2025 18:11

Is it that you’d like to do it but for a reason such as you can’t afford it, you don’t? Or is it you don’t think it should be a thing?

Personally, I think it’s a bit cringe, I saw so many tiktoks of mums decorating the whole house and giving so many presents as if it was their birthday and I was so baffled.

I will admit I do go a little overboard with some holidays like an easter basket alongside their egg (new outfit, easter book, new craft) and a christmas eve box (new pjs, choc, christmas book, christmas plate, crafts, 1 toy, teddy) but I think for Valentines it’s a bit ridiculous.

I would question if the friend is really a friend

My Dd came home from school in a panic saying she must get her best friend a gift because she's getting her a gift.
After some reassuring that of course she didn't have to buy her friend a gift as there's no special occasion.
Apparently there is. Galentines day which is a day before valentines and is a celebration of friendship.

Yay!!!!!😂

I hope no one on this thread criticising parents for doing things for their children on Valentine's day posts those awful Christmas pictures of their kids with a pile of presents under the tree filling the whole room. Because quite frankly if you do, you don't have a leg to stand on. It's just different iterations of dreadfulness.

It's all chavtastic!

I absolutely don’t do that either. It really winds me up too! Because then come the complaints about having nowhere to put it and then not having any money and January being miserable!! 😬

Oh yuk! What spectacularly downmarket behaviour.

I’ll say what many may be thinking: is this a class thing? Or American? 🙄

We are not American. I think it’s because of the way that most of the mums don’t actually do anything, they “work” 4 hours a week as a yoga instructor or something and mostly live of their DHs money. They have nothing to do all day but spend it and shove pictures on Facebook making those of us that aren’t “perfect mummies” feel inferior

There wasn’t a single thing on my news feed about parents doing things for their kids on Valentine’s Day. I’d be looking at who you’re friends with as all of my friends know this is ridiculous, hence we’re friends!

Snugglemonkey · 15/02/2025 12:14

minipie · 14/02/2025 21:44

But if you have genuinely gone through your life putting something on social media and not expecting the likes for doing it, then you’re a better person than me!

I have never, ever put something about my life on social media -ever - and if I did it wouldn’t be “for the likes” but for work purposes or to update friends & family far away.

There are thousands like me out there believe it or not. Probably most of us are over 40.

We are happier for it. You should try it.

This is very normal to me. I use social media very sparingly, to update family and friends as I moved away. I can only ever get 13 likes as I have a private profile and 13 followers. Some of these people will be busy and not see or engage with my posts, so some probably have fewer than 13 likes. It has never occurred to me to even check!

Though I am also over 40.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 15/02/2025 11:21

Blimey, I’ve not seen a single post on my social media about parents doing valentines stuff for their kids!

DH is away and I got the kids a £4 Teddy and a pack of love hearts, a spontaneous thing from near the checkout at Tesco. They often get little teddies and/or sweets so that was just a fairly normal little treat.

KimberleyClark · 15/02/2025 10:03

I think it’s just symptomatic of the overly child centric society we live in, that children must not be excluded from anything that is fun for adults.

Like getting pissed and having casual sex? I find that quite fun, as do many women I know (OK, knew 😀).

Applying anything to do with Valentines’ day to children is deeply inappropriate. The whole idea, which I’d never heard of before this thread, gives me the creeps.

IridiumSky · 15/02/2025 11:09

ToffeePennie · 14/02/2025 22:19

I’m with you.
At our school, mums show up with “Valentines Goodie Bags” for their child, at the end of the day, and post pics of “my little valentine” enjoying heart shaped waffles for breakfast and some mega expensive toys/plushies.
I hate it but I still feel guilty when I see all the photos of the school with kids and goodie bags and I know that mine haven’t got anything, because I was out working over school pick up.

When will you learn not to outsource your self-worth and validation to social media and 'likes'.

You've been completely had OP. As in they've got you. They've turned you into a consumer-chomping champion if you succumb to this nonsense.

It's not that it's on you. It's that the joke is on you. You're caught up in a never-ending vacuous world of trying to impress other people in an effort to be 'popular' on SM.

What a way to waste your cash and countless valuable hours of keeping up with the Jones'.

Stop now! The most confident people are highly individual thinkers that don't buy brands and don't follow influencers and certainly don't post on SM for likes. Give up this terrible soul-destroying habit. Stop feeding the Facebook/Instagram machine.

I left that world 4 years ago and haven't looked back. It's been such a relief and I love that these days I'm mysterious and no one knows anything about me!

I’ve not been ‘had’ because I haven’t done it! And I don’t intend to ‘keep up with the joneses’

If anyone had tried to make me feel guilty about not roping my children into Valentine’s Day, I’d have told them that I think it’s totally inappropriate for an adult to send Valentine gifts to children, and sends a very mixed message about adult/child relationships.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 15/02/2025 08:37

Don’t let it get to you. If some people want to make a big show then they can, if others don’t it’s also fine.

my teenage dd and her boyfriend brought each other stuff with their own money from their part time jobs. I wouldn’t be getting involved in any of that. DH and I brought ourselves a box of chocolates to share and stuffed them down our faces in bed. Who says romance is dead eh? We don’t go in for a big show on one specific day.

for what it’s worth. Only one person on my social media feed appeared to go beyond the standard flowers and chocolates. They’re very much trying to become an influencer and live their Instagram life, so I didn’t give it any thought.

Upstartled · 15/02/2025 08:33

Just come off social media, I hadn't heard anything of this until someone mentioned it on MN. I don't know why you'd feel guilty - it's clearly ridiculous.

Exactly. What is missing in your life that you feel that you need 'likes'.

Nothing. It’s kind of just the point of social media.

I do wonder if the same could be said of you though, that you’ve constantly come on this thread to have a dig at me and make me feel bad about something several mums netters
agree I have a point about though 🤷‍♀️

I do not know a single person who has bought their children anything for Valentine's Day. My social media has exactly zero examples of this. Don't think it's widespread ...

This!

Kuckingfnobden · 15/02/2025 07:12

It's International Book Giving Day. That's what I celebrate.

Ooh fab I could get into that!

mondaytosunday · 15/02/2025 02:49

Talked to my 19 year old at uni and she said you wouldn't know it was Valentine's Day. I mean it's nice if you are in a romantic relationship but otherwise it's a non event.
