So much cheap rubbish in supermarkets.
Valentines is so cheesy..
But seriously it can't be good for single people that are depressed about being single.

Luckily I don't care.

Is anyone going to avoid the supermarket tonight then?
The card trigger thing is interesting. It could easily upset people if they look too closely. It's not about being single, more that people might feel everyone else is smug and happy.
Which of course isn't actually true.
Tesco and Sainsbury's Valentines stuff is right as you walk in. I find it stupid as it's too easy for all the lazy husbands/ bfs.

I have only ever bought a a card in the past and made sure it wasn't a stupid crappy one..something subtle and organic looking.

Firstly, there will be nothing Valentines themed left.

Secondly, if anyone feels that people are 'smug' because they're happy or in a couple, that's a them problem and the probably need to address that.

Everything can be a tat-fest though. Hello Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Bonfire night, Baby showers, Weddings…February is such a miserable month, if it’s an excuse for a nice meal I’m not going to get miserable about it.

I’ve bought some heart shaped biscuits for the kids, cupcakes and steak for me my partner, some beautiful red tulips and a card. Oh and I got my daughter some fleecy pink PJs with roses and heats on but she needed them. I wouldn’t go anywhere near a teddy on a stick or a plastic rose.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/02/2025 16:24

I've been single for years

Dd's sperm donor used to cause a huge fight before my winter birthday so he wouldn't have to buy me a gift

he's avoid me from my bday, over Christmas and new year and valentines and then contact me after with apologies

Insane that I had such low self esteem I didn't cut him off

I love valentines day now, it's about self love and dd

It can be triggering for some i guess, but you just have to stay indoors for the day x

NotaRealHousewife · 14/02/2025 15:59

If someone is so triggered by something as simple as a card then it's better that they stay in the house for the day.

@ComtesseDeSpair The Colin the caterpillar cakes are fab!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/02/2025 15:49

ThejoyofNC · 14/02/2025 14:35

I miss the days before being "triggered" was a thing.

I suspect Roy Rogers preferred it too.

Anotherparkingthread · 14/02/2025 15:46

Better ban mothers day stuff too because eventually most people outlive their parents. Fathers day too. Christmas for all the lonely. Flowers need to go as well incase you accidentally think about somebody else reviewing some and find this upsetting. Take all the booze off the shelves, all the wine and get rid of special offers incase you are booze hound. All the chocolate, cakes and crisps so we can spare the obese. All the meat because the vegans find it too distressing. Bread from the bakery has to go (I'm allergic to wheat so I'm going to get all triggered about it because it smells too delicious).

Basically the shop now only sells lentils and fresh kale. You win at life. ? 😁

FastFood · 14/02/2025 15:45

I have never been triggered by a card or some lady putting chocolate in her shopping cart.
If I was triggered by something so mundane, I'm not sure being single would be my main problem.

KimberleyClark · 14/02/2025 15:41

Mothers’ Day can be intensely triggering for those struggling with onfetilityorwho have lost their mothers. Would you wan5 to ban that too OP?

LadyKenya · 14/02/2025 15:36

The cheap rubbish is there all year round, as well. Tot for people to buy at Easter, Halloween, Christmas. Rinse, and repeat.

I avoid supermarkets in general

MrsSunshine2b · 14/02/2025 15:32

I think it tells us something about our societal values when we're quite happy to celebrate Mothers Day and Fathers Day, and we go all out to make Christmas, Easter and Halloween special for children, but we have so many issues with a day spent celebrating your adult SO.

You can buy cheap tat for literally any occasion, or you can celebrate with things that are meaningful to you.

There's just as many people with triggers around parents or religious celebrations as people with triggers around relationships.

Sunnydiary · 14/02/2025 15:30

You could say the same about Mothers or Fathers Day.

I am not remotely interested in Valentines Day but if others enjoy it, I am fine with that.

Aquarius1234 · 14/02/2025 15:28

I remember years ago at school Valentines was about sending a card to someone and putting a ? in it.
Then getting rejected by said person. I had way more confidence as a teen lol yet was very shy.

But yeh wasn't Valentines supposed to be about mystery.

We don't do valentines day, think it's commercialised shite, but many do and if they enjoy it, crack on.

Anyone that gets triggered over it...sad, but...tough. The world can't stop everything because some people can't deal with it. Life doesn't work like that

I like valentines day single or a couple Good excuse for wine and chocolate and nice food. Buy yourself flowers

tearsandtiaras · 14/02/2025 15:15

Im a bit bias as I work with severely disadvantaged children, and find the commercialism of Christmas, mothers/ fathers day and valentines day etc triggers children to be reminded what they don't have etc. eg making mothers day card in class at school when your mother is dead/ in prison/ in rehab is very upsetting for children. The symbol of the card can trigger this emotional pain/
Loss in adolescence/ adulthood.

Each to their own though, if you want to celebrate valentines day crack on.

I think it should be a small
Personal affair.

tearsandtiaras · 14/02/2025 14:27

Disagree on this. Cards can be a big trauma trigger. People can still accept your statements and be triggered

Fitting user name for this sentiment.

ComtesseDeSpair · 14/02/2025 15:05

As an aside, if you haven’t already seen, M&S currently has a Valentine’s Day Cupid Colin the Caterpillar cake for sale, and he is stinkin’ cute. Reception treated our office to them yesterday and just as stinkin’ cute was seeing the sheer joy an office full of insurance executives got out of cutting Cupid Colin cake to give to their mate at the next desk. It was glorious.

Branster · 14/02/2025 14:54

Triggered by the sight of a Valentine's card? Ridiculous.

This triggering malarkey is getting so exhausting. Everything triggers someone somewhere sometime - apparently.
It's life. We all miss or loose someone/ something very dear along the way. It doesn't mean we should never ever be reminded of that person or situation.

I'd say Mother's Day cards might be upsetting when someone lost their mother. But then so could be the sight of anything else which reminds of the lost mother.

Valentines is easy enough to ignore. And if a couple gift each other anything there is plenty of choice for beautiful flowers or good quality items.

Clafoutie · 14/02/2025 14:53

I thought I had been sent a Valentine’s Day card today when I opened my post box and saw a red envelope. But it was just somebody trying to sell me insurance😕

ItGhoul · 14/02/2025 14:49

Is everyone meant to pretend nothing good is happening in their lives on the off-chance that it upsets someone who's feeling miserable?

LifeExperience · 14/02/2025 14:43

tearsandtiaras · 14/02/2025 14:27

Disagree on this. Cards can be a big trauma trigger. People can still accept your statements and be triggered

Then people need to be mature adults and realize that occasionally they will be confronted with things that upset them.

Needmorelego · 14/02/2025 14:41

The amount of products in shops this year is quite a small amount in my opinion.
Even in big branches of supermarkets it's barely 2 bays of products and half of those are boxes of chocolates!
If you don't walk down the "seasonal" aisle you wouldn't even notice it.

Simplynotsimple · 14/02/2025 14:40

PennyKitchen · 14/02/2025 14:32

Well life goes on. Just something you're going to have to get over or find ways to deal with to live functionally in society. I understand that people may be upset by certain things but be sensible.

Have to agree. Everyone goes through shit times in life, and unfortunately life will always find a way to remind you of those shit times. I always get an odd twinge around Mother’s Day knowing I don’t have a mother to give a card to - and mine was an absolute narcissist when alive! It’s the feeling of being ‘abnormal’ in a world that pushes social togetherness. But you suck it up and realise that your issues isn’t everybody else’s. Can’t imagine having a small breakdown in The Card Factory over it.
