to call my cockerpoo a poodle?

I rescued him last year. I did health testing via a DNA sample as I have done with my other rescues in the past. It can give you an idea of what you might need to prepare for in the future.

Anyway, it also tells you the breed make up and turns out he is 82% poodle which does not surprise me.

WIBU to say he is a poodle when people ask about him? He looks like a poodle, acts like a poodle and turns out is overwhelmingly poodle...🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm just so acutely aware of all the doodle hate and judgement 😭

(obvs his vet record and insurance has the breed make up)

Is it just me or, or you just read the word "poodle " so many times it now sounds weird?

Anyway, call it what you want. I'd call it a cockerpoo if that's what he is. I generally just call them all doodles when I'm out, so many variations. Can be excellent dogs, get the training in and you'll have a lovely pet.

We have a cockerpoo with extra poodle (cockerpoo mum, poodle dad). We call him a cocker poodle poo!

Both breeds are equally ugly in my eyes, so I'd believe you saying it was either of them.

Datgal · 15/02/2025 06:54

I work in a vet surgery. Some of the names we get 😂...they are all crossbreeds, and our computer drop down menu doesn't identify cockerpoos etc. We have to identify them as 'crossbreeds', as that's what they are.
A woman came in to register her 'shi poo'...
I was like, surely it's a pooey shit? 😂 Cute though.
I like the really unintentional mixes you get. Whippet cross border collie. Bloody lovely dog 😍

Helpmechooseausername · 15/02/2025 00:51

We've got a mongrel who was the result of a whippet having a liaison with a poodle.

He's a whippypoo!

ThePuppyHasZoomiesAgain · 15/02/2025 00:41

Just say you adopted him from a rescue and you don't know what breed he is but he's a good boy and that's all that matters. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Whycanineverthinkofone · 14/02/2025 21:49

“Rescue, so god knows” 😂

i don’t get all the breed obsession. Always with the “what breed is he”. And the poodlydoodly “jackscavapooshitshon” bollocks as if it’s proper breed.

I have a yorkie- probably one of the most recognisable breeds out there, and I still constantly get asked about his breed. I think people now are so conditioned to the poodlydoodlys they’re expecting some cross name, like yorkipoo or morkie, and can’t get their heads round a single breed. I had a friend with a giant poodle and it would piss her off that everyone thought he was a labradoodle, and would never believe that he was “just” a poodle.

WingingItSince1973 · 14/02/2025 21:41

My girl was sold as a cavapoo but her mum was a cavapoo and her dad a toy poodle so I just say she's a poodle cross.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/02/2025 12:51

seriously - how many people actually ask what breed he is?
I talk to lots of people with dogs - or mostly the dogs (but always ask first)
I might ask what their name is, how old they are - but very very rarely-ish what breed - mostly only if they are very unusual looking - a dog I see regularly is a spanish water dog with dreadlocks.
Surely if he looks poodle, most people will assume that - if anyone does ask, just say mostly poodle.

People ask me what breed my toy poodle is on an almost daily basis! People seem to be so used to seeing poodle mixes that they are a bit surprised to see an actual poodle. People also seem surprised at what athletic dogs they are under that coat!

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 14/02/2025 19:50

I'd say he was a mixture if asked

Poodle or Poodle Cross. Mongrel if it's an older person you are speaking with. You choose.

Cavapoo etc. basically means 'mongrel with a £2500 mark-up' 😂

Edited

When I was growing up in Yorkshire it was known as 'dog gor out'😆

crossstitchingnana · 14/02/2025 19:06

My labradoodle is 85% poodle but she, although does look like a poodle, isn't so I just say "labradoodle".

Sinkintotheswamp · 14/02/2025 18:58

Poo-mix.

HellNoWay · 14/02/2025 08:55

I used to have a poodle cross and found the 'poodle' part quite embarrassing so always emphasised the 'cross' part of it or just said 'hes a mix'!

Not sure why you want to call him poodle to be honest! Cockerpoo is a tad better but not much!

If it was me I'd say 'poodle cross' or if he almost doesn't quite look too poodley, I'd just say 'mix'!

What’s wrong with poodles?!

Polkadotbabushka · 14/02/2025 18:51

Can we see a pic pls?

I have a red toy poodle and people are always surprised when I says ‘Yes just a poodle!’

billycat321 · 14/02/2025 18:44

Cockapoo, labradoodle, spanieltriever, corgihusky. Why not call them what they are? Mongrels. (Oh, dear. Might that hurt the dogs' feelings and affect their self esteem?)

OctoberandApril · 14/02/2025 18:43

I haven't got one but the poodle crosses are lovely dogs.

Haha. Yeah. The power of marketing 😅

RubberyChicken · 14/02/2025 08:28

Surely it's a cross-breed or mongrel, but there's nothing wrong with that

Modern use of the term mongrel is rare and generally used to describe a dog with no definable breed type

If it's two known purebreds then the current term is now crossbreed

KrisAkabusi · 14/02/2025 18:02

"Not knowing which breed combinations make up a dog can make it very difficult to predict how the puppies will look, their temperament, and if they will be at risk of health problems."

I'm laughing at the idea of the Kennel Club caring about health problems when half their pedigrees are so inbred and deformed they are in constant pain and have drastically shortened lives!

i have had a cockapoo for 4 years and never once encountered ‘doodle hate’…. Think you might be over thinking this

Doodle hate is definitely a thing!

You have a mongrel. Makes me laugh how people have become infatuated with the idea that a mongrel can be worth a fortune if you think up a silly name for it. Capitalism at it's best - 50 years ago you couldn't have charged a tenner for a mongrel, but give it a fancy name and it's suddenly worth £thousands.

I have a cross breed that cost £500 10 years ago. It was the best £500 I've spent.

No-one cares that it makes you giggle.

We spent £499 on a private plate for our campervan too.

I could be less of a wanker.

I have a Cockapoo and only ever met one twat that corrected me to mongrel. If your dog is a Cockapoo it's a Cockapoo.

Cockapoo isn't even a breed it's a mix!

SquigglePigs · 14/02/2025 17:45

Given he's mostly poodle I can see why you don't want to call him a cockerpoo necessarily. Personally I'd call him a poodle cross or a mostly-poodle mix.

Although technically mongrel is the right term I always felt it had slightly negative connotations. We had a real mixed dog when I was growing up and I always called her a pick'n'mix. If pushed I'd say "vet's best guess is X cross Y".
