to call my cockerpoo a poodle?

I rescued him last year. I did health testing via a DNA sample as I have done with my other rescues in the past. It can give you an idea of what you might need to prepare for in the future.

Anyway, it also tells you the breed make up and turns out he is 82% poodle which does not surprise me.

WIBU to say he is a poodle when people ask about him? He looks like a poodle, acts like a poodle and turns out is overwhelmingly poodle...🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm just so acutely aware of all the doodle hate and judgement 😭

(obvs his vet record and insurance has the breed make up)

Not facts, your opinion. There is a big difference between puppy farming, and someone breeding 2-3 litters from a bitch that happens not to be KC registered e.g. not all sheepdogs are KC registered, but farmers will breed a litter or 2 from a bitch who has proven to be a great working dog.

You tarring every person who breeds a non-KC registered litter as a puppy farmer IS unfair, and purely your opinion!

And btw, the analogy with Trump isn't bizarre at all - the poster was referring purely and simply to your propensity to state your opinion as being the only valid one, and Trump is currently the most well proponent of that way of thinking, I got that immediately and I'm sure many others did.

Thank you, I backed off as you cannot have a rational discussion with someone who seems incapable of considering a different point of view towards an issue. 🤷‍♀️

A Poodle cross is what he is. I can't be arsed with anyone that makes up what 'breed' their dog is. (Cocker Poos and all the other designer crosses are not breeds to anyone thinking they are btw)

All these stupid names are so bloody naff. Just like all the pet parent/furbaby shite. Like the dog gives a shiny shite whether he's called a mongrel, a blue whale or a mouldy banana.

It doesn't matter what you call them they are lovely dogs and we get lots in our local pub. They are very popular.

You really aren’t.

Well, yes, I am. My opinion is shared by anyone who works at improving breed standards and breeds ethically.

Say "He's mostly poodle I think, but he's a rescue, so...." no one's going to be judging that.

I do that too. He's a Shih tzu, so sometimes I just shorten it to "shit."

😂😂😂😂😂😂

I don't think anyone cares, they're probably just asking out of politeness.

I'd love to get it DNA for my dog, She is a rescue, springer spaniel, classic brown and white, my only doubt, if she is a full springer spaniel is her very short match stick legs and longer body head to tail than other springers.

You can just do what I do and say "my dog is an arsehole".

I actually didn't say that. I said dispeputable, unethical breeders and backyard breeders, not puppy farmers.

Good working sheepdogs are dual registered with the KC and ISDS. I have three.

Every person who deliberately breeds crossbreeds/mongrels is unethical. It's not an opinion. The people who defend them and buy puppies from them are even worse, as they keep them going. Liken me to Trump all you want to - it won't change the fact that I am one of the people who actually care about the welfare and future of dogs. Unlike people who buy Doodles.

Edited

Well, you responded to a pp saying "There are some very good and ethical none KC registered breeders," by saying "No, there aren't."

That was your comment I took as opinion rather than fact.

With facts? Even more so of an utterly bizarre comparison.

My cockapoo is infinitely more cocker than poodle. I just call her a knob as it is more descriptive 💀

Nothing to do with where you live, nationality. It’s more how you approach a discussion…………..

I have a poodle and everyone assumes she's a cockerpoo anyway unless she's just had her hair cut. Call yours what you like! I usually get quite a positive reaction if I say she's a pure poodle as you don't get as many!

Snap! People are often surprised to hear mine is poodle as he doesn't have the classic fancy poodle haircut. Honestly op, you're over-thinking this Smile

I have a Cockapoo and only ever met one twat that corrected me to mongrel. If your dog is a Cockapoo it's a Cockapoo.

Call me a twat then.

You have a Mongrel. A mixed breed. A Mutt. A Heinz 57.

Cockapoo
Doodles

aren't breeds, they are mutts.

I have had mixed breeds and pedigrees over the course of my life. They all have personalities, they were all loving.

Getitwright · 16/02/2025 14:14

There are some very good and ethical none KC registered breeders, and it’s not fair to say that everyone breeding designer breeds is puppy farming. But sadly puppy farms do exist. I was shocked to learn that in the USA, it’s something the Amish community are involved in. But good and bad people exist everywhere. The KC have been taken to task at times about some of their supposedly “good” breed qualities. You never saw crippled German Shepherd’s when I was a child, they were usually level backed and very athletic.

No, there aren't.

I have a cockapoo and 100% agree with this, if asked we would describe him as a cockash#t.

My mixed breed is half Shitzu. DH calls him a LittleShit.

Where did your dog come from then? How long did you wait?

the issue with ethical breeders is they have long wait lists. Most people who decide to get a puppy don’t want to wait 2 years.

i do know someone who breeds cockerpoos. I have mixed feelings but I have to give it to her, she follows the same rules as the pedigree breeder I got mine from. it’s one litter every two years, no more than 2 litters per bitch, and she doesn’t have a litter unless she has more than 10 people on a wait list so the pups are all guaranteed homes. She has many people approach her for a dog who won’t wait.

mixed breeds, especially the doodlies, aren’t intentionally bred for any other reason than to make money. My pedigree breeder shows- it’s her hobby, she does crufts etc. other dogs are bred to work. Mixed breeds can’t show and rarely work.

I take it you saw that other thread as well!! 😁

OP - just call him what he is! People don’t like poodle-crosses 99.9% of the time because of the owners behaviour (not training their dog, preaching its hypoallergenic etc) rather than because of the dog itself

I was about to say I remember mixes breeds dogs being called mongrels back in the day! If the dog i had a child was here now I guess he'd be a corkie - half cairn terrier, half Yorkshire terrier....

Octopies · 16/02/2025 14:07

I think people are just asking to make polite conversation, so I wouldn't overthink it! Both my rescue dogs are some type of cross breeds that we've never bothered to get DNA tested, they just get refered to as German Shepherd and greyhound when people ask the sex, names etc. I've never thought to refer to them as cross breeds.
