To report what a comedian said to me 6 years ago

Was at a works do at a hotel in a certain north west town, very famous for entertainment and shows and such, and they had a guy on telling jokes and introducing various forms of entertainment.
He was not funny at all and was being very crude (I am not a prude but that way he was doing it was just yuck)

anyway he catches sight of me and yells “omg look at the size of those knockers, they are huge” everyone laughs while I die a little inside.
he then proceeds to get 3 blokes up on stage to “check me out”. These blokes are looking me up and down like I am a piece of meat.

The guy then asked me to stand up and jump up and down so they bounce so the men can have a really good luck. At this stage I get up and walk out and the guy is shouting what a prude I am and for goodness sake love it was only a laugh.

I am in tears at this stage and go back to my room in the hotel. I phone my husband who insists on coming to get me even though it was a two hour drive. None of my colleagues came to check on me. When husband gets there I am waiting for him and he tries to insist he goes into the hotel and demands to speak to someone but I get in that much of a state he just gives me a hug and takes me home.

the worst thing is I did not do anything, I did not complain I just wanted to put it behind me. Also my colleagues really took the piss and I ended up leaving (luckily it was a job I was only doing a few hours at to make some extra money)

the reason it is playing on my mind is all these allegations coming out about certain male celebs. I am awake now thinking about it. I know this guy is not a celeb but he actually still works at this hotel and does the Christmas cabaret shows so he has no doubt done this to other women. I have always been angry at myself for not doing anything and a still have the odd nightmare about it. Do I make a complaint now or just accept it’s too late and in the past

IMO you should have complained at the time, if at all. I hate it when women come out years later and say all sorts of things happened many years ago - how can anyone prove anything but celebrities lives can be completely ruined just by being named. I was at a party that J Saville was at, I could easily make something up but would never contemplate doing so.

Careful @Teddybear23, you are dangerously close to coming across as a victim blaming misogynist.

Readmorebooks40 · 15/02/2025 20:07

You haven't overacted. He humiliated you and everyone joined in. You should report it to the hotel. It might not make a difference but if enough people complained it might.

It was a works do so really she was pressured to attend.

But she could have walked out, she wasn't locked in the room if it was at a hotel? That's what I would have done once it became clear what his act was.
I honestly don't know what sort of company would have found this acceptable entertainment these days! Surely they did some research?!
I'm not a prude at all, but there are limits and this would have been my limit!

Anewyearanewday · 15/02/2025 20:05

I think it is too late to do much now but I would leave reviews all over the internet outlining what he said to you. At least that way, people can make an informed decision whether to buy tickets for his gig or not.

I think if I were you, I would write a stinking review of his 'comedy' either on the hotel website or on FB etc. I have done this and thousands of people see these reviews.

Yeah I'd do this. I hate this sort of crudity, it used to happen a lot in the 80s & 90s when I used to go out, if I'd had the opportunity to leave reviews I'd have have done it in a heartbeat. I'd have haunted that tosser online until everyone knew what he was like!! But I can bear a grudge til the day I die ( or until they die 😉)

Usually you know what type of act it will be - if you don’t like it dont go. Everyone’s entitled to their own taste in humour.

LoneAndLoco · 15/02/2025 20:01

I think your employer was at fault for organising the do. It’s harassment. Will men ever realise we don’t choose our body shape. The fact you felt humiliated and then left your job is significant. However, I think it is too late to do anything about it.

Teddybear23 · 15/02/2025 20:00

MaggieBsBoat · 14/02/2025 05:23

Was it part of his act?
I would do an online review saying frankly he’s shit. You won’t be the only one who thinks he is. But sadly if enough people find him funny he’ll still be in a job that’s the nature of comedy.

It sounds like he was the sort of 'comedian' who told those sort of 'jokes'. There were several of them around back then, unfortunately. Most of the audience would be expecting it so I don't think complaining about it would help.

And they are still about today. I went to a drag night a few months ago and one of the acts picked on my friend's adult DD who happens to be rather large-breasted. She got slightly embarrassed, but wasn't overly upset. The rest of her family laughed and it was all taken as a bit of fun, but obviously this sort of comedy isn't to everyone's taste.

FoxtonFoxton · 15/02/2025 19:57

I had very, very similar at a work conference evening event some years ago weirdly! Wonder if it was the same guy -I can't remember who it was, but he was shit and boring as well as crude. To me, it wasn't about tits but about making me stand up and twirl for the men (in a more crude way but I can't remember what he said to be honest). I obviously didn't do it and just sat there not laughing (like the majority of the audience to be honest). I was comforted by the fact that his crap act was much more embarrassing than what he said to me! Personally, I'd put it in the past and move on. He's a sad twat with crap jokes, you have nice tits and a great husband.

SteveBognor · 15/02/2025 19:55

6 years is a long time in comedy - I would be surprised if he still does that in his act now, because it is so last decade. Maybe think of yourself as a pioneer, and ahead of the curve, by being one of the first to decide that this kind of behavior had had its day when you voted with your feet and walked out. Any action now, I suspect, would just be met with a comment such as, he has changed his style. However, if you wanted to get it out of your head, and put it to rest, a letter of apology could just work. I am sure if you were to write to the hotel say that you were upset and embarrassed by the guy 6 years ago at a works do then they would happily obtain a letter of apology from him, that might just have a positive affect on you and your memory of the night. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Cottonplease · 15/02/2025 19:54

Plus the man is a thick moron. He's too much of an idiot to be original.

This. Will have much more of an impact.

Brinkley22 · 15/02/2025 19:50

I am really pleased you walked out; you put a boundary in; it was a way of saying, “you’re not objectifying me you misogynistic asshole!”. Well done.

I’m sorry you were so objectified by him; it’s a really horrible feeling to be treated as an object and you are not overreacting at all. I think that might play on my mind still.

I remember coming across a male when I was in my 20s who kept saying really crude things to me. I tried arguing and eventually hit him and I regret it to this day. I wish I had walked away like you did! (Honestly I bet he felt a bit of a dick after you walked out).

Also can you ever imagine a female comedian asking a man to stand up and jump around so three women could objectify him and stare at his penis? It really is a strange world we live in

Horrible experience but so long ago, just forget it

He was vile to humiliate you like that.
You did not overreact at all and I’m glad you walked out.
You might start by getting advice from a sexual abuse helpline as it still upsets you so much. He didn’t touch you but his words were a kind of violation.

This. It’s sexual abuse and I’m not surprised you are still troubled by it. Seek advice - I hope you are ok.

StMarie4me · 15/02/2025 19:40

Redspottyfrog · 14/02/2025 05:20

I would not contact the police it would be the hotel. It’s ok I won’t bother I obviously overreacted. Maybe I should have even been flattered.

No you did NOT over react. Your feelings were and are very valid.

He was pathetic, crude and misogynistic. Clearly a shitty comedian of that's how he gets his laughs.

You have a fabulous DH who did what you needed him to do. That's what you need to take away from this. No matter how awful that man was. Which he was.

fingerbobz · 15/02/2025 19:29

Surely a comedian is there to tell jokes?

Not humiliate and ridicule women for having breasts

I would have been mortified if that happened to me

fingerbobz · 15/02/2025 19:26

He is a dick

But then so are the 3 blokes who joined in

And all the people who laughed at him

Ideally, evryone in the audience would shout boo....get off...heckle

Know any jokes mate?

That is the only thing to stop these pillocks

Fauxligarchy · 15/02/2025 19:21

DistanceCall · 14/02/2025 05:00

Report what? That he was rude and crude? That's not sexual assault. It's not a crime.

It’s sexual harassment which is a crime

lifeonmars100 · 15/02/2025 19:19

He was vile, look at it this way, if a stranger you passed in the street spoke to you this way it would be seen by most reasonable people as verbal harassment. Where it all goes a bit off is the fact this was a public show and sadly some people find this sort of stuff hilarious. You stayed true to yourself and walked out, well done, some people (and I am not blaming them ) would have been rooted to the spot with shock or would just have gone along with it to keep the peace. Many years ago I went with my then partner to a pub which had a local "comedian" who most thought was very funny but all his crap was misogynistic and really crude (and I mean crude), He picked on every woman and made horrible comments about their bodies and everyone cackled away . No comments about the men. We never went there again, not even for drink on ordinary non-performance nights. As some have suggested maybe talk to someone about the fact that you still think about it. Sadly this sort of stuff still goes on

BoredZelda · 15/02/2025 19:15

If you don’t like it, don’t go, you can’t censor everything in the world in case someone doesn’t like it. I don’t agree with what the ‘comedian’ did btw.

Writing a bad review isn't censorship. It's using the same freedom the guy used, to say what she thinks.

ThisRedLion · 15/02/2025 19:14

Your way overthinking this jesus it was a comedy show maybe you should of googled it before you went you can't just try ruin someone's life because you felt uncomfortable at slapstick comedy it made you feel uncomfortable and you left that was that if anything you should of said something to your colleagues who failed to see if you was upset that would've upset me more and furthermore there are certain celebrity being attacked which are actusl lies so you can't just go all out for justice because there's non to have you could however email this comedian or the place he works at explain what happened and how it made you feel and see if you get a response although I wouldn't hold my breathe
