I went to a book club last night- all fine, enjoyed it- and they asked me who I live with and I said my husband and my son and they asked how old he is and when I said his age there were no gasps, no look of shock, just nods
I have always always always been told I don't look my age but now people just nod. What is this hell?!
I'm 55 and my son is 29.
Up until I turned 53 people would say I didn't look my age
I know it's not a big deal really but couldn't they have pretended to look shocked?
It's not a big ask is it?
So upset

I get why you’re upset OP, none of us like aging, it can be very hard.

But think about what you are saying - I don’t look my age sounds very competitive. It comes across as I don’t look as old as all of you.

Isitafaultykitten · 13/02/2025 12:29

Wow, there seems to have been a massive sense of humour failure round here! YANBU OP. I've been mistaken for my Mother before, now that was devastating.

MissDoubleU · 13/02/2025 12:28

I think when people say “I looked 30 at 50” they miss that actually very little aging happens in this time frame anyway. Most 40 year olds I know don’t look all that different to their 30 year olds selves. And most 30 year olds don’t look all that different to how they looked in their 20’s.

The amount of celebrity photos that get shared, compared to their past selves with “they must be a vampire! This woman never ages!” No actually, we just previously had the media bomb us with ideas that at 40 you were well and truly done as a woman, when this is not at all the case. Agree with PP. People look their age. Whatever their age is.

Heres the sticker. Looking younger is not really a big compliment. Younger doesn’t mean more beautiful. More confident, more self assured. I certainly feel better in my 30’s than I did in my twenties. I feel more beautiful than ever today. If someone said I looked young, I’d be like.. okay? What does that even mean in the grand scheme of things?

It's not vanity tho
It's just musing upon what has suddenly changed. Your people don't have this change to mourn and clearly have always been sour faced miseries

You need to start adding years to your DS' age, that's where you are going wrong.

Then at a certain point you start taking years off his age so that people are impressed that you had a child so late.

Unpaidviewer · 13/02/2025 12:28

Why does everyone on here think they look young for their age?! It's very rare that I've met someone in real life and been surprised by their age.

I look older than I am, properly haggard. Breastfeeding has aged me by about 10 years and sucked all the youth from my body.

Tiswa · 13/02/2025 12:25

What was the age of the book club and the age of those who make the comments?

and @Ninerina everyone mourns youth but perhaps some don’t put as much stock into how they are perceive to look. My Nan always said how she looked reflected the life she had led and she was proud of that.

you may well have aged, the book club may well not be your people or they simply didn’t think anything of it or indeed give the maths a moments thought

and I think society nowadays doesn’t have the same concept of age or what you can do or look like at a particular age

Auldy · 13/02/2025 12:25

I once got mistaken for my husband's mother. My husband is older than me. So I win.

31stJune1973 · 13/02/2025 12:25

When people say 'you don't look old enough' for x thing, they are just being sociably polite - it's rare they actually mean anything by it. The vast majority of people look their age, or thereabouts.

JHound · 13/02/2025 12:22

😂

Crispyturtle · 13/02/2025 12:21

I totally get it, I’m offended every time the shop assistant presses the ‘Clearly Over 25’ button on the self service till, fecking RUDE. I’m 43 😆

Ninerina · 13/02/2025 10:15

Yes I'm joking!
Sort of
But a part of me does feel sad about it obviously
I mean, I even did a dramatic pause waiting for their reaction which didn't happen 🙃
Anyway it sounds like the majority of you are not my people
My people would understand what I'm saying and commiserate with me

I'm one of your people. I know where you are coming from. I'm always told I dont look my age ( just turned 70). But when I do mention my age some times, sometimes the person I'm telling doesn't say a word, and all the times people look surprised and say no your not , you look really good, it just takes one person to make me feel old.

Ninerina · 13/02/2025 12:20

Phobiaphobic · 13/02/2025 11:52

Clearly the majority of people aren't as vain, immature and self-absorbed as your people.

God what is wrong with some of these replies today? 'I have found my people' is a well known, light hearted remark common on Mumsnet surely?

Poor OP must have aged even further from the stress of trying to get through to some of you that she was making a joke 😂

Ninerina · 13/02/2025 12:15

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/02/2025 11:39

If the OP was meant to be tongue in cheek, I’m afraid that completely escaped me. Perhaps a ‘lighthearted’ should have been added? It seemed so heartfelt!

Um, I literally put 'minor' thing in the title
If I had written it was a monumental travesty etc then you know you could be mistaken for misinterpreting it

Totally get you OP, I now 'look my age' and it's very upsetting 🤣 I expect to be told I look like a baby what is this fresh hell

Just wait until the the checkout woman in Iceland asks for your card, because it's 10% off for OAPs on Tuesdays.

I’ve had similar done to me. Asked if I wanted a small (pensioner) plate at a carvery. My sister who is older did not get asked. 😭😭

Letstheriveranswer · 13/02/2025 11:46

Up until I was 52 people regularly looked shocked when they discovered my age. Sometimes I'd be chatting to someone 20 years younger and I'd see them looking puzzled as something I said didn't make sense in the context of them thinking I was a lot younger.

So I started finding subtle ways to weave it into conversation and would still see shocked looks. But at 55, gradually I have noticed that I can probably stop doing this as nobody looks surprised anymore....😂. The neck and hands don't lie!

God me too. When I moved my new neighbour thought I was 30 ( I was fifty). The following year I had a full hysterectomy and everything just seemed to go to pot. Weight gain, dull skin, lifeless hair. No one ever says I look good for my age now (early sixties). I’ve got used to it but it did gall at first 😁

BunnyLake · 13/02/2025 11:50

There was a thread on here a year or so ago where the OP was upset because she kept getting told she didn't look old enough to have a son whatever age he was.

You can't win with people so they've learned to say nothing now, whether it’s looking good for your age or losing 100lbs in weight and looking great or whatever. We’ve learned to keep it zipped 🤐

'Your people' ???
You are really scraping the bottom of the barrel 😂

Zippedydodah · 13/02/2025 11:49

What were you expecting OP?
Shocked gasps?
Clutching of pearls?
People falling off their chairs?
Unending exclamations of ‘You don’t look it?’
Disappointed at the lack of attention?

Perhaps you need to find a different audience whose response will suit you?

saveforthat · 13/02/2025 11:48

I live this vicariously through my dog. She is 14 this year but acts like a puppy. People have always said ah, she's a young un but now she's going grey so looks like an old lady. It makes me ridiculously sad.

Ha! I understand your upsettness. When I was about 52 everyone would say 'Oooh you don't look your age!' which was nice to hear.
I went to a friend's wedding last week and when I said I was 59 (with a 20 year old son) no one said a thing 😁
I guess I now look OLD. But as a previous poster said, maybe it's time to stop caring so much and enjoy the years we have. (Although I do recommend YSL's Touch Eclat for the eye area)
