Do you get your children anything for Valentines day

Or do any activities with them?

I’m seeing it more and more as a thing for kids to be involved in, as in crafts or getting heart cupcakes..do you do things like that?

Not from me. It's commercialised nonsense.

FiveWhatByFiveWhat · 14/02/2025 09:06

@crackadawn a think it's a bit ott but honestly I'm more worried about the part of "the next generation" who are growing up with no home, no heating, no food, violent/addicted/absent parents, than I am about kids whose parents got them a heart shaped chocolate, FFS.

Modelling love and care is a good thing!

Your DS sounds like a wonderful person. Well done for raising such an emotionally intelligent young man.

That's really kind, thank you.

Ds (15) came into my room this morning wishing me a happy Valentine's Day.
I said thanks but I don't love him like that.
He said (in the wry way teenagers speak) "but you've been there for me from day one".
I thought it was pretty sweet.
He's smitten with his GF at the moment so today is a big deal for him.

Fur babies! That's different. I will arrange any fox shit we stumble across into a heart-shape for my dog to fucking roll in tomorrow.❤❤❤

I have a 7 month old and 2.5 year old. Me and toddler made heart cupcakes and made a card for each of his Grandparents. Just coloured paper with love heart stickers. Very easy and simple and kept him entertained for all of 20 mins but was a nice thing to receive for grandparents. I've got one card for both boys from mummy and daddy

I'm more shocked at the amount of people saying that it's about sex!!!!!!!!!!

Yes..... it's like asexual people who are in commited relationships don't exist.

I've got DD a card, I was in the card shop looking for one for DH and saw a sweet "daughter" one that I know she'll like, and a little net thing of chocolate love hearts. I know it's all a money making racket but it will make her happy.

We bake biscuits quite regularly and i'll often do a seasonal theme so if i was doing some in the days around valentines day they would be heart shaped but its not a given.

We do not make any sort of fuss about valentines for kids or adults. No cards or presents.

RandomButtons · 13/02/2025 18:48

A chocolate lollipop or heart shaped sweets yes. Nothing more. My mum used to do it for us and it was nice to feel included and loved.

Do what!!!? No, too silly to consider, lost all relevance and just a big old marketing exercise. The furbabies
🤮 will be getting something next....🙄

Yep. My dogs have heart shaped biscuits for tomorrow. Bite me.

SquashedSquid · 13/02/2025 18:46

Some of the comments on here are really weird. I'm well into my 40s and my parents used to get me a card and a small gift on Valentine's Day (heart lolly chocolates etc). When I got home from school, my Dad and I would cook some sort of ridiculous Valentine's meal together that usually involved red food colouring in everything. I have very fond memories of pink mash and bright red broccoli.

I've always got my own DCs a card and token gift too. It's just a sweet thing to do. It makes them feel loved. Why wouldn't anyone grasp at any opportunity to make their children feel loved? Why does everything have to be about sex? You all need your hard drives checking.

Sallyslider653 · 13/02/2025 18:23

Mumsnet has been divided on this issue for ages! I don't understand the faux concern about it! Everyone needs to calm down and grow up imho.

If I chose to make my dds, when they were primary school age, chocolate heart-shaped pancakes on Valentine's day that didn't make me a paedo thank you very much. Just as me and their dad buying them each a heart-shaped chocolate bar doesn't now that they are young adults.

The world would be a much happier place frankly if people stopped making a fuss about non-issues and seeing problems where there are none!

DollydaydreamTheThird · 13/02/2025 18:21

There are a lot of people lacking love on this thread! The joy on my boy's faces tomorrow when they open their little valentine's gifts is the only confirmation I need that I'm doing the right thing celebrating Valentine's with them as a family. 💌

purpleme12 · 13/02/2025 18:14

I sometimes get her a bar of chocolate
A mini token

Unfortunately now we're back to the shitty behaviour so I won't be going out of my way to get her something ☹️

No.

jellybe · 13/02/2025 18:08

Nope. But then me and DH don't get each other anything either. We have actual important memories to mark such as birthdays anniversary etc. don't see the need to buy into a marketing ploy.

You know what. The world is a shit show. Celebrate life however you want to. Sometimes the small things help! Who cares if others frown upon it:

If you listened to a large portion of mumsnet you’d never celebrate or enjoy anything that makes life that little bit more enjoyable.

Couldn't have put it better myself!

Newbie8918 · 13/02/2025 17:43

My DM still gets my sisters and I a card. I'm 44.

She's done this since we were all children. We'd also get something like a chocolate lolly and we'd laugh together at the silly verse.

Roses are Red
I'll Grant your wishes
Now finish your dinner
It's your turn for the dishes

I have the fondest memories of those verses and the laughing that we would do.

I have got my nephew (2) some cupid PJs.

I feel like this is another live and let live thread 🤣

How’s it about sex? Not today but just curious.

I suppose my thinking is romantic love usually involves sex and therefore is for adults

Mimilamore · 13/02/2025 17:16

Money making exercise.... too silly, get the furbabies and chickens something as well while you're at it 🙄😬

I've always seen it as a day for couples to celebrate romantic love, have dinner and have sex. So no I wouldn't include my kids in that. But I also find it very commercial and I have a lot of dates with my partner anyway so I don't see it as an important event. Even if was a day for platonic or family love, I wouldn't really feel the need to show my family more love on 14th Feb than on other days

Oh cripes. Dont tell me we have to have SEX! Way too much pressure. Grin

When I was growing up (Anglo culture but not in the UK) my parents would give me and my sister a little card and maybe some chocolates. I do the same with mine. TBH I am not Christian either but love Christmas day. And enjoy easter as well. Plus a few celebrations that are fairly mainstream in the religion I was brought up in. I just like celebrating things (although I'm not that fond of my birthday- feels embarrassing to have people pay me attention on my birthday). I like other people's birthdays though. My dad who IS very religious in my birth religion always says 'Life is short and often nasty- let's take the chance to enjoy it when we can' and I think that is a good approach.

There is so much commercialised crap out there, granted. But a card and a chocolate on a day celebrating love I cant get too bah humbug about.
