Do you get your children anything for Valentines day

Or do any activities with them?

I’m seeing it more and more as a thing for kids to be involved in, as in crafts or getting heart cupcakes..do you do things like that?

Usually I don't but I did this year, just a heart shaped teddy and some baileys heart shaped chocs for the older one

Glitchymn1 · 14/02/2025 13:44

Yes I do. DD made me a crafted, solid red heart ornament and I got her a card and box of chocs.

TheKeatingFive · 14/02/2025 13:40

Just when you think this place can't get any more batshit - someone pops up to talk about 'kitchen based grooming'

Never change, Mumsnet 😆

Okbyethen · 14/02/2025 13:27

I get my son heart shaped chocolate lollies and heart shaped sweeties with a card from 'someone who loves you'. I've done it ever since he was little but he cottoned on a few years back that it's me 😄

How’s it about sex? Not today but just curious.

Kitchen based grooming…? What, baking some heart shaped biscuits?! 😆 sorry that was meant for @Iwanttoliveonamountain

I suppose it fits very well with the pink glitter and fairytale princess culture we've decided to foist on little girls. I think I see more people mentioning getting cards and gifts for their daughters than their sons, wonder why this is ...

What a load of rubbish. People don't treat their boys differently than their girls. I only have boys and they have both had a card and some treats. They were over the moon and cried happy tears after reading our cards to them. Why wouldn't you tell your sons how much you love them?

I find the concept absolutely bizarre and am surprised at the amount of people saying yes!

Valentine’s Day is for romantic love/the person you’re shagging. It’s not for kids.

It’s everywhere for kids now a days though. Baby groups, play groups, cafes, my children’s nursery and school etc all have valentine’s theme stuff this week.

I only have a daughter Jeremiahbullfrog. If I had a son he'd get something too. Also I have read plenty of posts about sons. Still, if we can be groomers I suppose being sexist is a nice extra.

If you're going to insist on getting your DD a gift, you should have another child first. Make sure it's a boy, of course. Only then can you gift your DD, if your son gets an identical gift. Anything else and yes, it is sexist behaviour.

Whut?

Where are you getting this from? 🫠

I'd be really surprised if anyone bought for their daughter but not their son based purely on sex. Bit odd you think like that.

I also think it's nice for single teenagers and young women to get something on valentine's day even if it's only from mum. It can feel a very lonely day

It’s only lonely if you’re insecure and buy into the bullshit

wipeywipe · 14/02/2025 10:43

There are a lot of people lacking love on this thread!

😆 My dc don't need a VD themed gift bag to know I love them. But we are off on holiday tmw in case they are unsure, hopefully that will prove it!

wipeywipe · 14/02/2025 10:38

No, didn't realise I should be!

Not from me. It's commercialised nonsense.

Meh it's only commercial if you buy stuff. Home made cards here - we all made them for each other. At work we did origami hearts.

Needmorelego · 14/02/2025 10:31

Why do people care so much about what other families do or don't celebrate?

Househunter2025 · 14/02/2025 10:30

Whatnowthenfordone · 12/02/2025 22:29

It’s for romantic love. How could it be for kids?

They do it at nursery. So clearly it is for kids these days

KimberleyClark · 14/02/2025 10:30

I was never bother by Valentines Day and considered all the hype a load of commercial nonsense. We tell each other we love each other and do nice things all the time, not just on one day a year.

So do we. We also like looking forward to doing something a bit special on Valentine’s Day. Doesn’t have to be one or the other.

mumzof4x · 14/02/2025 10:28

I can't wait for DD aged 14 to get up and see her gift bag
Dd is Autistic and it will make her day as she really struggles with accepting being loved and anything like this means so much to her. Love her so much x
We had a great time filling it with goodies for her and a sweet red rose.
( it's teacher training day at her school btw!

SunnyViper · 14/02/2025 10:25

Do they fuck. Apart from it being a load of bollocks, it’s directed at adults.

PizzaPowder · 14/02/2025 10:23

A wee card and £2 teddy or chocs through the letter box from a secret admirer. Do the same for my niece.

IamGrout · 14/02/2025 10:19

If you celebrate the day why wouldn't you do it with the people you love?

I was never bother by Valentines Day and considered all the hype a load of commercial nonsense. We tell each other we love each other and do nice things all the time, not just on one day a year. However, when DS was small he was so proud of a Valentines card he made for me at school and it was fun to join in the Valentine's celebrations with a little extra treat or card. DS is a teen now and the little extra reminders of how much he is loved makes him happy.

I can confirm my thinking after this morning's school run - it's definitely alive and well within primary schools. I saw a lot of children with cards this morning. Maybe I should have snatched them from their hands and warned the Safeguarding lead that MN said it's only about sex.
