MIL calling DH during my C section asking him to order her a takeaway

As the title says - AIBU to think this is completely unacceptable? After a recent tricky end to pregnancy I was having a scheduled c section. Within an hour of the procedure MIL was calling DH asking him to order her a takeaway as she doesn't use apps on her phone. Unbeknownst to me he had done this, I only found out it had happened because shortly after when I was fresh out of surgery she called him back complaining that the items she received were incorrect. He hung up on her at that point as we're obviously not in a position to be thinking about that. It really makes me question how I feel about her as a whole and don't feel like I can forget it! AIBU to be annoyed?

So as the old saying goes if you have a prblem with it you have a partner problem not a MIL but how long would it have taken? if you didnt know then no idea why it matters now

I mean does it really change your life? You didn’t even realise it at the time!
You’ve literally just had a baby, focus on that.

This.

At the risk of disagreeing with most people, MIL's behaviour is a huge red flag. She knew exactly what she was doing, and wanted to focus her son's attention on herself instead of the new mother and baby. Another one who should have married her son and got it over with.

You should be annoyed with your dh. Does his phone not have an off switch?

Not quite a take away order but my mum has form for over stepping and not respecting boundaries etc. I had messaged our family chat (me, sister, brothers, mum and dad) to say they would be delivering baby. It was expected but sudden, I had been in hospital 4 weeks by this point, things changed and baby had to be delivered extremely premature etc. I said I would update when I could but I wouldn’t have my phone etc so don’t call. I had 17 missed calls within 3 minutes of that message from my mum 🤬 midwife put my phone onto dnd but as she called twice within seconds they started ringing through again. Ended up putting my phone onto airplane mode so we could at least get some undisturbed time and photos/videos of baby which we knew would be minimal. My birthing partner turned their phone off as she then started calling them…

It wasn’t that she was scared or worried before anyone thinks that, she just has form for trying to be front and centre amidst any tragedy going on.

@TheThreeMiracles Maybe you and the OP are unlucky?

I do detest posts that insult mothers-in-law. Most of us are hardworking, loving and helpful, normal people.

I'm sure most MIL are lovely like you, but obviously there are some who are far from pleasant and a few totally batshit!

Why on earth do you feel guilty by association?
I'm sure you agree not all DIL or SIL are lovely don't you? Should nice ones object to posts criticising the nasty ones?

Drop the paranoia!

GG1986 · 12/02/2025 21:18

Honestly I would be more pissed off with dh for agreeing and ordering it tbh!! What a moron.

<Stares at OP>

WTF have I just read?!

Unless he ordered a cake with “fuck you” written in icing he’s an idiot for agreeing. She’s positively batshit. Couldn’t bear the attention being on someone else for 5 minutes I guess

Tourmalines · 12/02/2025 21:13

I think it was a bit cheeky of her . No way in hell I’d have done that .

TheThreeMiracles · 12/02/2025 21:12

That would piss me off,my partners mum who we invited to be there just after dd was born turned up literally sobbing ( she'd had a row with his brothers ex ) she made it all about herself literally then fucked off to meet the ex to collect grandchild ! Never again! She wasn't welcome in the hospital the next time I had a baby why are mil like this !!

Fireangels · 12/02/2025 21:12

The day after I’d had a c section, my MIL insisted my DH (just him, not one of his 3 brothers) paint all of her exterior window frames. He just shrugged and said he’d be as quick as he could and would be in to visit me and our new baby as soon he could.
Her reasoning was that it was ok as we were in hospital so the staff could look after us!
And no, I have no idea why he didn’t tell her to F off!!!

cunningartificer · 12/02/2025 20:15

Wasn't it an hour afterwards? Not during the operation as PPs are suggesting. A little weird but down to your DH to tell her he was busy and perhaps he felt he could do it without it being much hassle. It clearly didn't disturb you at the time so didn't take his attention off you when you needed it...

I wouldn't be too bothered as I also read it as being an hour later. If I hadn't noticed at the time I certainly wouldn't care afterwards.
OP you say she's a good GM so I'd just focus on that.

You're not supposed to have your phone on in the operating theatre.

Nah, pretty commonplace for cs, the parents get photos, ask nice and staff will do it for you

@RedToothBrush Restaurants still have telephone lines.

They do indeed, plus websites with their menus, and that's how I order takeaways/deliveries, because I can't be arsed fiddling around with apps when I can speak to a human being.

greatvisuals · 12/02/2025 20:58

Twaddlepip · 12/02/2025 20:42

In what world is this true? It’s absolute nonsense. 🤣

Well it's usual in our hospital Trust. Maybe they can't be arsed with safety in yours.

Categories of mobile phone areas across the Trust can be split into three;

Category 1 – Non-Clinical areas/low risk patient areas (e.g. clinic waiting areas, corridors, reception areas), where mobile phones can be used by staff, patients and visitors alike.

Category 2 – Clinical Patient areas (e.g. general wards, departments) where mobile phones can be used by staff, patients and visitors, but may be subject to local restrictions if their use is deemed to be affecting patient care, dignity or confidentiality.

Category 3 – Safety Critical Patient areas (e.g. Intensive Care, High care, and Theatres): Mobile phones must be switched off in these areas.

Says who? The anaesthetist took my DH’s phone during both of my sections to take photos and videos of us. DH has long videos of the babies getting checked too.
Literally every person I know has a photo as soon as the baby came out!

Sorry Completlyjo
Myself and others my age ( around 80years) did not have a photo of the baby as soon as came out by C section.
Taking photos in the operating theatre unheard of then, ( except by staff for medical purposes only) and no husbands or partners allowed in the theatre. Also all sections done under GA then.No one wants to see themselves with endo tube coming out of their mouth. My two c sections were extreme emergencies both my children almost dead when born, successfully resuscitated thanks be to God.
I hope I have not offended you, in fact I envy you, I never saw either of my babies till two days old.
I am very pleased to know things have changed for the better

Have you heard of empathy? I’m sure OP is focusing on her baby just fine. Just in case you got lost, this is a forum where people come to talk about whatever they like. OP has just had a baby and is in a vulnerable position. You could’ve said something that helped, nothing at all, or something that didn’t belittle the OP. Not sure why you chose option three.

SixtySomething · 12/02/2025 20:53

It's so ridiculous that I'm thinking this is a spoof post.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 12/02/2025 20:49

I had an emcs at 35 weeks.. Dh's distraught phone call to mil resulted in her now telling him he could now take them on their annual trip away....
Ds was due that week and dh had said he wouldn't be going...
He told her no he wouldn't be leaving us...
She never forgave him.
Haven't see her for over a decade..

GreatCat · 12/02/2025 20:45

I think some of you might be imagining a little old dear. Statistically it’s likely that this woman is somewhere between the ages of Jarvis Cocker and Cat Deeley.

thepariscrimefiles · 12/02/2025 20:39

So your MIL knew that you were having a scheduled caesarian section and she still called your DH to ask him to order her a takeway? And your DH did it? That was an entirely inappropriate thing for them both to do.

Isittimeformynapyet · 12/02/2025 20:32

So he put the order in at some point during the hour before your surgery? That's just waiting around time tbh. Why does it matter?
