To be hurt and annoyed at being dropped by the BBC?

Ladyof2025 · 12/02/2025 18:14

BBC contacted me asking me to speak on camera about an aspect of local history I happen to know a bit about. I agreed and spent the next few days brushing up on the facts and then writing and rewriting a script and reading it out loud again and again until I knew it by heart and could speak confidently to camera as though I'd never said it before.

I do not have a pretty face, and am in my 60s and rather podgy, but I went to the trouble of going through my wardrobe for the perfect outfit that flattered my podginess, and had my hair cut specially and put on some make up, so I could be the best possible version of me that I could.

The production team visited, took me to the site and filmed me speaking. I did it smoothly and confidently and was glad that I had put in all the rehearsal so I came across as knowledgeable, professional and confident of my material. They said my performance was perfect, thanked me profusely and left.

After about a week they rang me to say that due to time and space issues the section of the programme that featured my input had been dropped. I felt absolutely gutted, not because I want to see myself on TV but because I had used up a lot of my valuable free time for several days preparing and rehearsing for it (for no fee I should add).

A few months later the programme I was dropped from came on TV and to my utter astonishment an attractive, slim young lady appeared, at the same site I was filmed at, and she spoke the exact words I had written and rehearsed! I nearly fell off my chair - the absolute bloody cheek of dropping ME but stealing the script that I had written. Thinking about it, I realised that they wanted my expert input, but not my saggy face or ample figure.

AIBU to be hurt and angry?

Maybe not every single word was the same but she mentioned a string of details that I had said in my speech that the programme makers did not know.
Specifically, I named some people (ie historical figures) who I had discovered were associated with the house; this was completely new, unpublished material turned up by me in my private hobby research.

This complicates it. Facts aren't copyrighted. Can you prove that there was no way anyone else could have done similar research and come to the same conclusion as you?

I get that you are annoyed that you made an effort and have been screwed over, but this sort of behaviour is common. The media reuses material but usually in a way that can't be proved to be plagiarism.

100 per cent this.

Hazylazydays · 13/02/2025 09:13

What a nasty post @Namechangey23 the OP is obviously already lacking in self confidence and you’re just making it worse. Think before you write, there’s a real person behind these posts who has already said this morning how upset she is.

theduchessofspork · 13/02/2025 09:10

MILLYmo0se · 13/02/2025 07:47

But she didn't, she rehearsed and said exactly what the OP had written out and rehearsed as far as I understand it

Which is why the OP’s telling of this is unlikely to be correct.

History documentaries get experts (or local history enthusiasts) to talk about their area of expertise. The don’t ask them to read from a script, because that doesn’t make for engaging TV.

So what likely happened is they recorded the OP, she was over-rehearsed and wooden or just didn’t work on camera (lots of people don’t) so they booked another expert or local enthusiast to re-do the job - in which case they’ll have talked about the same topic, but they won’t have used the OP’s words.

IF the show had an expert presenter, it’s possible they decided just to have them give the information, and they might have used a phrase or two the OP used - but it won’t be a repeat of the OP’s script, not least because the OP’s script won’t have been engaging TV and also because when presenters give info to camera like that it’s kept short.

It’s really disappointing for contributors when they get dropped, but programme makers primary job is to make good programmes, so sometimes it has to be done. No one asked the OP to get haircuts etc. I do understand why she’s upset but I think it’s unlikely she’s been wronged.

That's the real problem here. You told all your friends you'd be on TV and now have egg on your face because it's not. It's like straight out of Gavin and Stacey when Mick's whole family gather round to see his 'interview' which gets cut to a 2 second comment! It could have been worse OP!

O for goodness’ sake, it’s not like she was appearing on Bargain Hunt! (Not that there’s any shame in that).

Why be like this? Why bring people down?

Hazylazydays · 13/02/2025 09:08

I would definitely contact them, please don’t feel humiliated, you did nothing wrong, you put a lot of effort into it, be proud of that. We’re a nation of sneery put downers, you see enough of it on here. If you’re absolutely sure that they used your script word for word then put up a fight. The very least they should have done was thanked you for the input, informed you it would be used by one of their presenters, but they would give you credit for the information during the broadcast. Otherwise, yes, they have stolen your research.
This has obviously knocked your already depleted confidence, you did something they thought worthy of broadcasting, hold your head high, be proud of that achievement and make that contact today.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 13/02/2025 09:08

I can understand why you would be so upset. I had a similar experience but was just dropped from the slot rather than replaced and was disappointed. In your position I would be outraged.

A couple of suggestions:

  • is it possible it was voice related rather than appearance related? Did you maybe talk too quickly or were difficult to understand in some way?
  • is it possible your segment was unusual in some way and so they had to reshoot? Some kind of noise interference like an aeroplane flying overhead?

Given they have plagiarised your unique material I would consider legal action honestly. Go by the mantra, “what would a man do in this situation?”

Who does that? Someone who cares about her hobby subject, which she has put a huge amount of time and effort into over the years, and at long last has been gifted with the chance to tell the world why this subject matters!

Who does that? A shy person with low self esteem, who has had all her confidence battered out of her in life, who was nervous, anxious, self-conscious, aware that she isn't a pretty sight, and embarrassed about her fat body, having seen endless numbers of similar shaped people be humiliated on TV over nearly seven decades.

Who does that? An ordinary working-class woman who has never been on TV or radio, given a public speech or been in the public eye, one who was shaking inside at the mere thought of being on camera.

Who does that? Someone who did not want to let the programme-makers down by looking unkempt, fluffing her lines, punctuating every sentence with "er" and "um", getting stage fright, freezing like a rabbit in the headlights, making an utter twat of herself in front of confident TV people and ending up being dropped from the programme, and thus letting herself down and looking a fool to every friend she told that she was going to be on TV.

That's who.

Hugs OP. I would have done exactly the same thing...

I've been too scared to contact them because I worry that they will come back to me saying that it was something that I did, to "deserve" it and being humiliated about that.

You can compromise ‘Dear BBC time wasters, I recently became involved in your filming for X program. I prepared a piece and filmed on X day, at a cost of my personal time and expertise. I was told there was no longer running time for this work, which was disappointing but understandable. However, I have found you have since used my work, presented by Miss X Jones, broadcast on X date. I understand that I may not have been the most natural on camera, however if my work and words were still used, I expect this to be credited fully. I hope to open a discussion to find a resolution for this matter as soon as possible.’

I hope you receive an apology at least!

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 13/02/2025 09:05

How did they caption her, OP?

Ladyof2025 · 13/02/2025 09:04

Littletreefrog · 12/02/2025 18:26

If she did actually say the exact same words and you have evidence this was your work I would complain. Did this person have any expertise in the area or were they literally a mouthpiece?

No she wasn't another local person who had also researched the building. She was part of the team making the programme.

I’m sorry this happened to you. People on here love to gloat but I’d be shocked if anyone thought they were going to be on TV and didn’t put a bit of extra effort into their appearance. I don’t think that makes you vain, although it was obviously your choice. As for people saying you’re making it all up, just why?? I don’t think you’d have anything to gain from that, what a bizarre accusation. If I were you, I’d politely email asking what happened and noting that someone else was filmed saying your script in the same spot, and take it from there.

I work in television.

This sounds incredibly unlikely.

Time and money is tight and they just wouldn't spend it on these types of shenanigans.

If it is true then complain to the production company or team.

Maybe you were rubbish but they still needed to cover the info?

And another expert would be expected to say more or less the same thing wouldn't they?

Maybe OP was rubbish but the BBC should have been transparent and professional about it instead of coming up with lousy excuses.

That is surprising, if I’m honest. The bbc have always seem to use those who know their stuff rather than make a ‘pretty young thing’ read a script. Have you followed up on this?

I've been on the BBC for a similar reason and I find this very strange.

All the clothes sorting, hair cutting, writing your own script (who even does that??) was entirely your own choice.

They normally just want people to chat naturally about the subject, which is probably what the other woman did.

Yes this really..don't think you can blame the bbc for your vanity if they didn't say you had to do those things to appear.. seems like it is your ego that is bruised now as it was cut. I'm surprised if they truly nicked your 'script' and had a younger presenter read it, if so this would be cause for a complaint. They should give you an explanation, but not sure what else you want as you freely gave the information and presumably signed a model release? I have seen and heard some who memorize a script and it's bloody awful because it sounds exactly like it is being read anyway, even though it isn't. The best interviewees are the natural ones, but that's not easy if you have anxiety/nerves. I've seen people queue up to give the BBC free stuff like wonderful photos for the weather app not realising that really they could have been paid decent money for them, instead of giving them away for free! BBC amongst others has never really respected Photojournalism, why would they when they can get things for free from gullible people who just want to see their name on the telly/web?! They've been doing it for years, the much contested license fee doesn't cover much these days so they use their slim budgets as an excuse to rip off other people who are only too happy for give away their expertise/skills for free...

OP, I used to work in TV. I think it is most likely that you were over-rehearsed and that did not come across well when the rushes were viewed. Spontaneity is better for TV. Nothing to do with your appearance.

I work in a niche sector, and there are questions that if I was asked I would probably give a near-identical answer to someone else working in a similar role in the same sector. Could that have been the reason the other person appeared to say the same as you?

Obviously I understand that you are feeling frustrated but it's no reflection on you.

harriethoyle · 13/02/2025 08:44

I would be formalising a complaint about the unauthorised use of your script, which is your intellectual property - send them screen shots of the document metadata showing when you wrote it and tell them how many months BEFORE their shoot it was, and ask them how they intend to recompense you...

Screw being hurt - they've stolen from you, anger is very justified. Get in touch with the producer (text/email) and ask coolly what happened?

They did not have a printout of my script, no. But I spoke it to camera, a "talking head" and they could have transcribed it.
