Behaviour towards our dog..

Sorry it’s a long one. This is not about my dog’s behaviour but background for context..
We rescued a puppy before lockdown and after lockdown he was very reactive to any male visitors ( he was fine with children and women) coming to the house. He is now ok with people he knows but barks at any men he doesn’t know. He is a big Labrador and can look scary. He is ok outside, in other people’s houses, hotels etc. We tried everything and at the end his psychologist diagnosed him with anxiety and prescribed Prozac.
My best friend has a boyfriend ( let’s call him Ben ) and they have been seeing each other for about 7months. He didn’t meet her children yet but we met him a few times. I mentioned our dog to Ben and I said once the dog gets to know him outside the house, we will have them over for dinner. He thought it’s ridiculous that he needs to make an effort to meet the dog. I completely understand that but that’s what all of our other friends did and it worked. Ben said this anxious behaviour should be beaten out of him. My friend’s teenage daughter is suffering with anxiety and although I know dogs and humans are not the same, beating is never the answer! Last Sunday, we were planning to go for a dog walk and my friend asked if she and Ben can come along and then we can go to the pub for lunch. On the walk Ben was making mean remarks about our dog for no reason. In the pub, our dog would usually sit under the table by my DP’s feet but it takes him maybe 10min to settle. Normally we ignore him and he is fine. Ben was constantly bothering him, growling in his face and trying to pull him close. We were all telling him to leave the dog alone but he said he is just playing. As I predicted our dog started barking at him and Ben started barking back at him. My DP is holding on to the dog and I’m telling Ben to stop provoking him. The whole pub was looking at us like we are insane. I said to Ben to leave the dog alone because he can bite him. I only said that to stop him barking at the dog like a lunatic. Our dog never bitten anyone but it’s an animal and so it’s unpredictable when provoked. Ben said ( with the smirk on his face )that if he bites him he will need to be put down. After the whole scene my DP and I left. Later I spoke to my friend and she said the reason Ben was like that because he is scared of the dogs as he was once bitten. Would you be provoking a dog if you are scared of it? I know not everyone likes dogs. But those comments make me very wary of him and makes me think he is not as kind as he portrayed himself. Or I am overthinking it? Again this is not about the dog rather about Ben’s behaviour. There is something bothering me and I can’t put my finger on it. And AIBU to tell my friend to rethink the relationship?

Oh, do piss off. If he doesn't like dogs, he doesn't have to be around them. He could simply say 'Sorry, I can't be around dogs so I'll sit this one out' or the OP's friend could have invited everyone round to hers instead.

Secondly, the normal reaction to disliking/fearing dogs is to ignore them and keep a distance, not to deliberately torment the dog to try to provoke it and then laugh about having it killed.

He’s probably happy to see the back of all dogs. He’s not alone.

PaintDecisions · 12/02/2025 16:48

He's a fucking nut job and I hope your friend is seeing him for who he is.

Fencehedge · 12/02/2025 16:48

Constantsoul · 12/02/2025 16:46

Probably because he doesn’t want it there. People can act irrationally when put in an uncomfortable situation.

Cool story bro. I'm sure Ben wasn't chained to the table, and had a choice whether to walk away, or engage in dog-baiting.

FastFood · 12/02/2025 16:38

I know it's tempting to talk about yourself but it would have been preferable to read the OP before.

Ben (AKA the massive idiot) is the one interacting with the dog when asked not to.

JustSawJohnny · 12/02/2025 16:45

I'm a cat person but believe you learn a lot about a person from the way they interact with animals generally.

This bloke sounds like an absolute twat.

You can't really tell your mate to 'rethink the relationship' but you can tell her you don't really fancy spending time with him socially and suggest that she keeps an eye on his clear lack of empathy for the sake of her kids.

ThatDaringTurtle · 12/02/2025 16:43

I think Ben is the problem not the dog. Dogs know nice people

FoxtonFoxton · 12/02/2025 16:42

I wouldn't be seeing Ben anymore, inside of outside of the house. He's a massive prick. I'd tell my friend that as well and I'd actually really judge her for staying with him after that.

longtompot · 12/02/2025 16:42

Ben is being an idiot, and doesn't sound like a nice person, but you can't tell your friend who she can be in a relationship with.
I wish people would listen to owners about how to act around their dog. Mine barks at people coming in the house, but if you ignore her she calms down very quickly and then will start to come and sniff and eventually say hello. But no, people know best and keep saying hello...

Ben is an arsehole! He suggested beating your dog and then antagonised and provoked him! He'd not be stepping foot in my house ever!

This. Ben is an utter cunt and is displaying buntings of red flags. I doubt his behaviour to people who are not able to defend themselves well against him would be much better. Say, a teenage girl with anxiety. Your friend really should be viewing these warning signs with alarm but she's an adult and has to make her own decisions. He wouldn't be setting foot in my house again and if the friendship died because of it, so be it.

What is wrong with disliking dogs?

Nothing.

There is something wrong with being cruel to them and trying to provoke them into biting you, though. There's also something wrong with being an obnoxious cunt to your partner's friends, which Ben was also doing.

I do think it’s totally unnecessary that your dog has to acclimatise to (and I say this as someone with labs). Labs typically love attention and visitors so it’s odd that you feel this is a requirement.

Bens behaviour towards your dog sounds odd, so it probably solves your first problem as Im not sure I’d want to invite him based on his behaviour.

I don't think it's unnecessary at all. She is being a responsible dog owner by not
putting her dog in a situation where he might become reactive and cause harm to someone. He is a rescue so who knows what experiences he has had to cause him to be so frightened of men.

ItGhoul · 12/02/2025 16:39

Constantsoul · 12/02/2025 16:22

Ben probably hates dogs and doesn’t want to it there.

Dog owners would do well to appreciate that not everyone thinks their animals are in any way desirable.

I choose not to spend any time around dogs and wouldn't appreciate one being foisted on me.

Ben is weird.

@JadeMember

I'd be very wary of getting in the middle of a friend's relationship but I'd NEVER let that man anywhere near my dog again, especially not in my own home - he sounds like a prick!!

catsoop · 12/02/2025 16:38

I've heard that a few times about beating a dog to break them into submission.
Wtf how is that even a thing. People are scum they really are.
Bens a prick, fuck him off.
😡

Flossflower · 12/02/2025 16:36

Ben sounds an idiot but I don’t think you should take your dog into a pub if it takes 10 minutes to settle it.

BotterMon · 12/02/2025 16:35

First and last time I'd ever be in the same place as Ben the cockwomble. What dickhead behaviour.

FastFood · 12/02/2025 16:35

Ben is a massive idiot.

Onleemoi · 12/02/2025 16:31

Ben and Constantsoul. A match made in heaven.

What is wrong with disliking dogs?

ItGhoul · 12/02/2025 16:34

There is something bothering me and I can’t put my finger on it

You still 'can't put your finger on it' after he'd been rude to you, indicated that he approves of animal abuse, tormented your nervous dog and then laughed about the possibility of having him put to sleep? Yeah, it's a real head-scratcher that one, really hard to pin down.

Sorry, but why the actual fucking hell would you ever speak to this man again?
He's a massive cunt and your friend is also fucking appalling for having a relationship with a man like this in the first place. If was dating someone who behaved like that, especially in the company of my friends, I'd dump them on the spot. He's a nasty piece of work and has no manners.

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/02/2025 16:34

What the fuck is his problem? 🤨
Absolute Tool of a man.

gollyimholly · 12/02/2025 16:34

Ben sounds hideous.

I don't have pets (and don't want them) but it is so intolerable to see people be cruel and goady with animals. It would definitely put me off having someone like that over for dinner whether I had a pet or not.

UrsulasHerbBag · 12/02/2025 16:34

He’s an arsehole. He behaved like an arsehole and treated his girlfriend’s friends like shit which shows just how much respect he’s got for her let alone his insane behaviour around your dog.

Fencehedge · 12/02/2025 16:32

Of course you can put your finger on it! Trust yourself. He's a pathetic, abusive arsewipe.

And I say that as someone who intensely dislikes big dogs myself.

Why did you want to socialise with Ben after what he said?
