Why do some posters NOT read the full thread.

A few threads now where people don't read the full thread and come back with a completely different take on the problem.

Are they lazy, stupid or can't read/understand the written words.

OP posts:
New posts on this thread. Refresh page

I think some people are just desperate to jump on the OP for some small detail, so much so that if they took a few minutes to read all the OP's posts they'd see that it's already been raised and explained.

Meandhimtogether · 12/02/2025 15:39

It's not with the problem of keeping up.
It's the fact that some PPS change the narrative.

Example a OP posted that she was the only family member who didn't know about her brother getting married. The SECRECY from the family was the problem but some people were replying it might be because the registry office couldn't hold a lot of guests.

And sometimes it's a more upsetting/distressing thread than that one so answers can be inappropriate

Crazycatlady79 · 12/02/2025 18:05

Can't be arsed to RTFT, but YABU in the way you've approached this post.

lnks · 12/02/2025 15:33

Because some of us have neurodiversity's that impact our ability to read really long threads quickly enough to keep up.

So would just reading the OP's posts be possible?

That usually works and they're easy to find if you've changed the colours of the posts

So when you say 'are they lazy, stupid or illiterate', you must be assuming that this thread will only be read by people who read whole thread, but not by the people you are referring to.

Or is it that even you, somehow, are dimly aware that saying 'are you lazy, stupid or illiterate' might be a bit provocative, or even just very rude?

To help you along, yes, I am lazy, stupid and illiterate. Happy now?

(Oh, and you might need me to tell you that 'illiterate' means 'can't read/understand the written words' That may come in useful to you later.)

It’s extremely annoying. If a thread is 16 pages long, clearly a lot of discussion has gone on. Why would you think your bog standard ‘LTB!’ reply is anything other than redundant?? You don’t have to comment.

This!

Then those 10 page long threads with people saying the same unfunny "joke" from page 1 alllll the way through.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 12/02/2025 17:53

If it is an emotive subject and i have strong feelings of what i want to say after reading the initial post (where all relevant information should be for AIBU or advice seeking in relationships, which are really only the 2 topic boards i visit)
Then i don't want to lose my train of thought to go reading every other reply first, on multipage threads that could take hours! Even just reading OP further posts can get lengthy, plus my response is to the initial post, not potential drip feeds or side tangents and debates etc made later that completely change the situation.

I'm pretty sure they do if you use MN through your web browser, rather than the app.

Plenty of people say the app is very limited in what you can do, so I have no idea why they'd rather use that than desktop.

It's what's easier on a phone I answer through the email link

Drylogsonly · 12/02/2025 17:22

Too long, too boring or the answer is obvious - like this one. Because of course people aren’t alll stupid.
PS. I only read your OP for the reasons listed above, not even going to read all YOUR comments… you’re welcome!

JohnTheRevelator · 12/02/2025 16:57

Well when the thread goes on for several pages, maybe they don't have the time?

They don’t have to reply though. If I don’t have time to skim a long thread, I won’t reply. If I think I have a valid contribution, I will quickly check I’m not repeating others or worse, causing distress so someone. If someone is posting a thread about a terminally ill loved one, for example, and I don’t even bother to check the latest, I could possibly cause grief and upset to someone and ask “how is your dad? when he passed away some days ago - all because I didn’t check. I am sure it’s not someone’s intention but if I have something to post, I’ll check it won’t purposefully cause harm first.

Not all phones allow you to see all the updates from the op..and if your reading through pages of stuff you comment as you go or would never find it again.

Not for any of those reasons. I read the OP and leave a comment based on that, plus any updates they might give. But it's irrelevant to me what others post.

Hankunamatata · 12/02/2025 16:45

I can't find a see next on the app which makes skimming a thread awkward

Plenty of conversations go like that in real life, humans are messy imperfect creatures, as are their communications sometimes

True, but don't you usually ask for a precis if you turn up late to it?

You wouldn't ask "Why is Laura crying?" and then let the people who've been there all along give you one basic introductory sentence before cutting them dead and saying "No, no, I'm keen to guess!" like the customer in Monty Python's cheese shop... or would you?

It's really sad, that on a website that I ordinarily find to be one on which women support other women, you are laughing at my disability.

I genuinely feel pretty crap about myself already. I know some people think I am stupid or thick, and maybe I am. I just wish people would stop and think about the fact that there are real people behind the user names, with real feelings

🤣

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/02/2025 16:39

You can't read the OP'S updates on the App and I only use the App. It's frustrating TBH.

I know threads can sometimes move very quickly, and that people want to respond to particular posts as they come across them...

However, when people are replying directly to the OP - especially when they haven't even read all the OP's posts - with what they must surely realise is going to be an obvious and far from original response, I do wonder what they think they're achieving.

Even when I have read the thread, if somebody has said what I would have said, I accept that it's been said and I don't duplicate it.

When questioned, people will cite the fact that they consider the thread too long for them to read, but they apparently don't realise that, by adding their (much duplicated) comment, they're making it even longer for everybody else to read. Maybe they just assume that their time is much more important than everybody else's?

I do wonder how many of the people who wade right in obliviously would do this in real life too: turn up halfway through a discussion and just chime in with their thoughts and wisdom on what they assume it must be all about?

I'm reminded of the Gavin & Stacey thread at Christmas, where somebody said they'd watched a compilation of '20 best G&S moments' - obviously intended as a highlight/summing up nostalgia trip for people who are familiar with the programme - and found it rubbish as they didn't know any of the background or any of the in-jokes that had developed over the years!

By the way, even if your device doesn't allow 'see all', doesn't it still highlight the OP's posts on a different colour, so you can fast-scroll through until you get to a green/pink or whatever post?

I don't know why it pisses people off so much, its not like they're the thread police

lnks · 12/02/2025 16:13

Anyway, I'll leave you to it. It's clear nobody is willing to consider anything other than their own points of view so it's really not worth me posting

Ace56 · 12/02/2025 16:12

I do think there are a lot of non-IT literate people on Mumsnet, as there are often comments from people who can’t work out how to vote, how to edit, how to quote threads etc. So I’m not surprised they can’t work out how to filter the OP’s responses.

If there’s a super long thread that’s all you really need to do, as often the OP gives vital updates or drip feeds so the responses at the beginning are sometimes irrelevant!
