low key ? For example someone says " does this top not low key go with these jeans" it seems to be used all the time now. Maybe annoyed is not the right word but it's irritating 🤣 . Light-hearted post really. Are there any sayings that seem to be "trending" that annoys you ?

I'd be tempted to say, "I off-key agree with you." It makes as much sense as their "low-key". But then, I tend to be annoying to those who annoy me.

Bbq1 · 12/02/2025 16:01

"With the greatest respect" - always said before the speaker says something quite insulting disrespectful.

Insidethelargeapple · 12/02/2025 15:57

'Think' in articles e.g. 'blue is in (think sunny days)'.

'Shout out to' various hotel staff and waiters in reviews, it drives me mad.

strongswan · 12/02/2025 15:57

Low key doesn't bother me. I'm another who loathes hearing 'it's giving' though!

If I wanted to describe that I was talking as I was turning then I would say "as I was turning around I said" - turned is the past tense of turn ie. I turned and then I spoke.
Turning is active - happening at the time.

Its been explained....several times, I'm not doing it again

HelpMeUnpickThis · 12/02/2025 15:53

I really can’t get on board with the annoyance.

I still remember my teens and we had stupid words that make no sense.

I am grateful that my children are able to come to me and say these extremely random, senseless (to me) words and phrases.

Making fun of these words/phrases in private is fine but I am very grateful that my children still even engage me on conversations.

ANameForOscar · 12/02/2025 15:53

My brain 'translates' lol So when people add extra letters for emphasis I find it really odd!

Loooool (laugh out out out out out loud)
Lololol (laugh out loud out loud out loud)

ISpyNoPlumPie · 12/02/2025 15:53

I hate that hits/doesn’t hit/hits hard. I don’t know why I think it sounds so, so incredibly stupid, but I just find it awful.

I like low key though 😆 embarrassingly, I say quite a few of the listed annoying phrases. But only to be cringe and annoying for my children.

NotSorry · 12/02/2025 15:51

curating

curating a dress collection, a book collection, a playlist etc.

JUST STOP IT!!!

Tetchypants · 12/02/2025 15:51

Reaching out.

The only reaching out I’ll be doing is to punch you if you say it again,

WhatterySquash · 12/02/2025 15:50

I like "wheelhouse" though. Fab word.

RedRobyn2021 · 12/02/2025 15:50

I live in the north and say this, not in that context though

I'll say in reference to plans

"Feel like doing something low key this weekend"

Thirteenblackcat · 12/02/2025 15:48

Madamecholetsbonnet · 12/02/2025 14:31

Is this a northern thing? Not heard it here in my little corner of SE.

No I don’t think it is. I’ve never heard it used in my little corner of the UK

MagpiePi · 12/02/2025 15:48

JollyHolly30 · 12/02/2025 15:01

I can't stand 'it's giving..'

ie "this skirt is giving 70's glam" or
"it's giving 'obsessed with your ex' "

😡

It'll morph into 'gifting' soon, I bet! 😂

Nobody just gives anything to anyone anymore.

passthegripplease · 12/02/2025 15:48

Turned round and said. Did you actually turn or spin round to speak? More wanky expressions. I just reply, no spinning required as I'd get dizzy and fall over. Fun to watch not so amusing for me though.😀

Cherryandpineapple · 12/02/2025 15:48

YANBU.

For me, my top 2 that make me want to scream are -

"It is what it is" - pointless. A waste of words.

Also when people talk about someone' " bandwidth ". What do they mean? Scope to take on work? Just use a normal expression for Gods sake. Don't use poncey management-speak.

OMG "It is what it is" . Of course it fuckin is or it wouldn't be what it was.
My #1 grrrr

People saying something gives them them the ick.

Posters ending a sentence with , no?

Yes!! - to both.

And many more, inc. anyone writing gonna, kinda, sorta, loose when they mean lose, ect when they mean etc., not to mention starting posts with ‘Me and..’ or ‘Myself and…’*

When I’m a dictator I shall have everyone who annoys me thrown into a rat-infested dungeon for a fortnight.
That’ll larn ‘em. 😈
*for misusers of ‘myself’ I think I’ll make it 3 weeks.

Ending a sentence with a question drives me batty

ANameForOscar · 12/02/2025 15:44

When people type out that pretend pause thing.

"That's... that's not what it means."

I don't know why it irritates me so much!

WhatterySquash · 12/02/2025 15:44

I'm terrible for being annoyed by words and phrases so I have a long list, but I haven't heard :"low key" used in this way - if I do it WILL annoy me though! Grin

Agree abut "welcoming" a baby and also I've been irritated by the use of "shared" being everywhere recently. "The former couple share a son, XXX aged 7" and even worse "shared a kiss" makes me want to scream.

Hhoudini · 12/02/2025 15:41

I say ‘it is what it is’, it’s shorthand for ‘It’s shit actually but talking about it is going to make no difference and actually is just boring for you and for me so I’d rather we talked about something else’.

gladwhiskers · 12/02/2025 15:36

Invite instead of invitation.

Though today's odd usage often becomes tomorrow's correct language.

Me neither.

People online say "n then" instead of "and then" and other similar uses of "n" instead of "and". IT'S TWO EXTRA LETTERS FOR THE SAKE OF FUCK.

‘… for the sake of fuck’ - and that’s not annoying?

This has now become my new something that annoys me. Why rewrite the good old-fashioned ‘for fuck’s sake’?

For fuck’s sake.
