To ask how we stop dangerous cyclists

Why do the most dangerous ones wear those stupid little headcams too? YOU'RE the problem, guy.

When my daughter was around 1 year old I was pushing her in a buggy near a cross junction with lights. A young man on a push bike came flying round the corner (jumping a red light) and cycled straight into my daughter’s buggy. She could have been seriously hurt. I was quite shocked and mentioned it to a couple of other mums (cyclists themselves) at the playgroup I was attending that morning. I had my head ripped off for daring to critisise a cyclist as “it’s motorists that are the problem etc etc”. They simply couldn’t accept that a cyclist could behave dangerously or have done anything dangerous. I was quite upset!

Honestly with shared paths you'd think pedestrians would be cyclist aware but no, they walk in the middle of the track with earpods in, and are totally unaware . . . so let's talk about personal responsibility . . .

Same applies as with cars though, you need to slow down and pass with a safe width.

FrippEnos · 11/02/2025 21:32

Many cyclists can go over 15mph with pedal assist.
As a shared space you as the person with the vehicle need to be aware of your surroundings and make allowances for those around you, that is how it is supposed to work
There are also non pedal assist e-bikes that are legal but are road use and off road use only.

I think we all tar them with the same brush, but in reality the mountain bikers are all good, they pull out of the way, they smile....
Roadies are the vermin, the overflowings of the cesspit, the step below traffic wardens, the mould on the bread, the crumbs in the jam etc. They ride in clumps along country lanes and smaller roads, you follow them for miles whilst they ignorantly refuse to let you pass, and then undertake the queue of traffic to get to the front of the lights... and they swear and raise fingers at you.
Why do we put up with them?

Should be culled. Especially the male ones with fancy ball protecting pants.

Soon the mamil will split off into its own lineage and no longer be able to breed.

Wonderful. Thanks for the update

Most pedal assist e bikes are unable to go over 15mph because theyre speed capped. If it's a shared space you should not be walking in the middle blocking it, the same way cyclists shouldn't. And your dog should be on a short lead and not able to run in front of the cyclist which frankly happens too frequently to count.

To the poster that commented upon electric scooters and e bikes that you do not need to pedal, they are regulated and illegal. The law is very clear but the police choose not to enforce the law which is frustrating for all of us.

Eh I’m talking about regular bicycles they can go any speed and often do on footpaths meant for only pedestrians.

And problems come in different sizes.

Personally I'd rather concentrate on stopping the 5 deaths a day (not to mention the 80 also seriously injured) caused by motorists than a few minor injuries a year caused by cyclists.

Wher you getting your stats from. Making them up?

Yeah let’s talk about cyclists on footpaths going at 20 30 mph down hill that’s always fun when your walking slowly along with your dog.

. . . because many of the cycle lanes are badly maintained with overhanging trees and cracks, and you are continually having to giveway where they bisect side roads. On the road you just keep going as it's the main roads priority. That's why.

Maybe give it some thought . . ..

none of this absolves you of your personal responsibility to other footpath users.

You can very easily contact the council and get them to cut over hanging branches. I did.

It’s funny, during my CBT my instructor was very clear with assume all vehicles are out to kill you…it seems a daft sentiment but actually it’s designed to make you consider how vulnerable you are on a motorbike.

If more cyclist’s had the same approach then I think it would be better, but there does seem to be an awful lot of cyclists who believe the road belongs to them and only them and everyone should make way for them.

The city I live in has spent millions putting bicycle lanes in and yet you still get the arrogant cyclists on the road-why willingly put yourself in the dangerous path when there is a safe place for you to be?

I find it funny how cyclists always explain the things they do by saying it’s easier or safer for them and that it is the motorists responsibility to look out for them as the more vulnerable road users. So cyclists can cycle at 8mph in the middle of the road for miles and no one is meant to get annoyed. Cars are supposed to just accept it and keep back. No overtaking able quite often due to small and busy roads. The cyclist does not have to pull over briefly even if they can because they have just as much right to be there as the car. The cars just need to suck it up because the roads are a shared space and cyclists have priority due to being more vulnerable.

But. God forbid a pedestrian gets in a cyclists way! How dare a more vulnerable slower shared path user get in the way of the quicker more dangerous shared path user!!! Selfish pedestrians not being aware they are causing a blockage and they should immediately leap out the way of any approaching cyclist!

No, just be aware of their surroundings and other people using the space 🙄

I would think that's obvious, the ones I use don't have any dividing line though.

Well, you would think that. But the segregated shared path I walk on is like the Wild West! I sometimes get brave and tell cyclists they're on the wrong side, but I'm usually met with a mouthful of abuse.

If they're so stupid as to not be able to read signs and markings, I'm not sure they should be allowed out, tbh!

NotMeNoNo · 11/02/2025 19:51

NoWordForFluffy · 11/02/2025 19:43

And can cyclists also please stick to one side? The side that is marked and signposted? That would be bloody lovely.

I appreciate that motorists can be awful to cyclists (although sometimes deserved!) but many cyclists in Central London are incredibly dangerous. They don't stop at red lights and people who are crossing (perfectly legally with a green man showing) are regularly nearly hit. That needs to be clamped down on.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/02/2025 19:43

NotMeNoNo · 11/02/2025 19:41

Segregated cycle lanes that join up properly.
Regulate high powered electric bikes and enforce it.
Awareness campaign for everyone (pedestrian/cyclist/motorist) to be more considerate of each other.

I'm with PP on the shared paths. Please, just walk to one side if you're a solo pedestrian.

MysteriousUsername · 11/02/2025 19:43

I got threatened by a car driver because he did a dangerous overtake of me on a corner and had to swerve to avoid a car coming the opposite way and break to avoid a car at temporary traffic lights. He hit the kerb. This was all my fault for being a cyclist, not his utterly shit driving, so he told me he'd smash my face in.

Another cyclist shouted abuse at me and my DP when we were cycling two abreast on an empty and very wide road.

But yeah, I cycle safely, stop at red lights, am mindful of pedestrians on shared use paths, and I even have insurance.

I am also a car driver and a pedestrian so I am aware of all things on the road. And none of my journeys are more important than the safety of others. Which is what many car drivers seem to forget.

E scooters and those illegal electric bikes are another problem altogether and more should be done about those, weaving in and out of traffic, on and off pavements, without looking. They must think they're invincible.

There is the capacity for more than one problem you know.
Just because motorists can kill that doesn't absolve cyclists from any responsibility nor does it mean cyclists shouldn't be held to account when they cause injury

I don't cycle on roads unless there's a cycle path.

Bit of nuance between mowing down a cyclist than catching the bottom of someone's jacket on my bike handle 😂

Til “catching a jacket” doesn’t go the way you intend, and that person is 60+, falls and has a life changing hip injury because you seem to think you need to teach them a lesson.

You are the reason that pedestrians and drivers alike loathe cyclists.

People should be allowed to walk in peace without the fear of bikes crashing up their backside.

You all want your cake and to eat it too. Free reign of the roads, your own designated lanes and cycle paths in parks. Bloody sick of you all!

Hugattack · 11/02/2025 19:26

HappySeven · 11/02/2025 18:08

No, I'm not. I only take primary position if it's really tight and sometimes I fail to do that. Even if I did though there's no need for the "punishment passes" I sometimes get after traffic islands.

I drive too and think it would do all motorists/cyclists/ pedestrians good to experience each other's position.

I have a friend who trains lorry drivers to be aware of cyclists by taking them out the road on bikes. They need this training to be eligible to work for certain contractors. I thought this seemed a good initiative and agree with you that a lot of road users would benefit from something similar.
