To believe that eating meat should be illegal?

The environmental damage and animal cruelty outweighs the cultural or personal benefits. AIBU to think it’s time to outlaw meat production?

Believe it if you like, but it would bugger world economies and cause famine if we outlawed it… it would take decades to create a food industry that could sustain the world population without meat.

I am a picture of health. Thank you for asking.

and a sheep farmer and a chicken keeper.

fancy a leg of lamb?

I'm glad to hear it. As am I on a vegan diet, which I thoroughly recommend for its health benefits. Unlike you, my livelihood doesn't depend on other people choosing to eat a certain way. I also have the experience of both ways of eating so am able to compare, presumably also unlike you. So I think its fair to say I'm in a position to be more objective.

And I suppose you're a picture of health with a kebab in one hand and a big mac in the other? Red faced stinking of the meat sweats, whining about how you NEED meat to fuel you, or you'll somehow expire during your sedentary afternoon? No? So how about we leave the nasty stereotypes out for all of us.

you replied with some nonsense about how we were intended to eat meant but not to hunt it

No I didn't.

I will make one last attempt to help you understand:

Obviously someone has to do the hunting, but it doesn't have to be the person who eats the meat. There has always been and always will be someone else willing to do it.

Have a look around next time you are in a supermarket. You will see meat and meat products for sale for people who want to eat meat without hunting.

It's a bit like people who eat a plant based diet. They don't have to pick their vegetables from fields or their fruit from the orchards. They can if they want to, of course, but like the meat eaters they can go to a supermarket if they prefer.

All human beings (including you) are capable of digesting and gaining nutritional benefit from eating both animal and plant foods.

If you were to start eating meat today, your body would digest it and gain nutritional benefit from it. That is what makes us omnivores. That you choose not to does not mean you are not omnivorous by nature.

Nature doesn’t “intend” anything, nor do humans have a singular “nature” . Evolution is a process of selection for random gene mutations in the context of a given environment. That’s all it is. No grand design. Only randomness, survival and relativity to a changing environment.

An omnivore is a person or animal that eats a variety of plant and animal products. I am not an omnivore.

Definition of an omnivore:

  1. an animal or person that eats a variety of food of both plant and animal origin.
I don’t. So - again- makes no sense.

I want geese but my DH says they are a pain as they leave slippery slimy poop everywhere. I though I could fence them off and put a paddling pool in.

We had a pond with a fence around it to stop the larger animals going in, even if you left the gate open they would mostly stay in their pond area. They do better with a secure shelter as well and to be locked up at night because of foxes, they're usually hardy and big enough to not get eaten but we lost on of our girls when she was sitting on eggs to a bite to the neck through the fence, so after that built them a fairly sized coop to go in at night, a chicken coop wouldn't be big enough. They do leave slimy poo but it's not too bad if you have lots of space and keep them off the main paths/tracks and you don't over feed them.

They are extremely noisy and can be aggressive, everybody who came to the farm hated the geese more than the guard dog lol. I quite like that about them.

They’d probably be thrilled not to be farm animals anymore to be honest.

More accurately they wouldn’t exist.

I’ve had geese, they do indeed leave enormous poos. They are great lawnmowers though and really keep the grass down( the reason for massive poos ) I often think when keeping birds the key is actually more space rather than less. I keep chickens now but because they’ve got the run of the place they have little impact on the garden whereas when they are cooped up they destroy all the plants.

I had romantic notions about animals which were entirely unfounded in reality.

These illusions were quickly squashed by fact when I moved to a farm, which came furnished with 50odd beef cattle, 600 sheep, a load of dogs, some geese and a few pigs and a cat. Pigs are disgusting, I don't even like looking at them and the smell of pigs is revolting too. They can also bite through bone, much worse than a dog bite (thankfully I have not been bitten) and any particularly rambunctious pigs and bullocks went on the block first. This is how it has been for centuries and why we have domestic livestock, by killing and not reproducing from aggressive animals.

I liked the geese, I didn't eat those. Same for the dogs.

The first meat I ate was sausages.

You replied to my reply to the above post. Keep up.

Assuming you were not mistaken when you last checked, you are indeed an omnivore, like all humans. This remains the case regardless of what you choose to eat or not to eat.

Why? Sounds pretty fair to me.

"look after"? 😂You only "look after" them until the time comes to slaughter them, at which point, I doubt they are feeling very looked after.

If we ban all meat, these cases may well become commonplace. The reality is that a baby will not thrive on a vegan diet without supplementation. Huge risk

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-49430857.amp

What utter rubbish. My friend has vegan kids they are as solid and as healthy as can be. Raised vegan from birth.

BrightLightFright · 13/02/2025 09:16

So, all the hilly bits of the UK are going to be terraced, veg and cereal will be grown and everyone will keep their peelings which will be collected and mulched. This will provide fertiliser for the aforementioned veg and cereal crops.

People often have pie-in-the-sky ideas. It is putting it into practice that counts.

There is a big house in the valley (sheep farming as far back as records go) where I live. It comes with a few acres of undulating grazing land. It was bought by a rich chap from the city with big ideas. Now this land is not hilly enough to need to be terraced, it is flat enough for a tractor, so he had the great idea to get the sheep off, plough up the grass and grow cereals. Well harvest time came and so did the rain (perfectly normal for the area) and of course, it was too wet to get the harvest in. The ground was too soft to take the tractor on the field, so there the crop stood until it rotted. The land is now grass with sheep on it again.

The fantasy means nothing.

some people think nature is our basic designed behaviours eg its natural for humans to eg walk, basically they think by saying nature, we are pre programmed for that behaviour

I am astonished that this needs explaining, but I'll do my best.

We are omnivores. Obviously, nature intends us to eat meat.

Human society is organised in such a way that hunters provide the meat for those who want to eat it. There is no intent or requirement in nature that you cannot eat the meat that was provided by someone else (butchers, supermarkets and farm shops, for example).

Humans are social, even in the earliest times, there were individuals whose role it was to provide meat for the family/community.

It's absolute bollocks to suggest that nature only intends that hunters should eat meat... 🙄

All industrial agriculture is horrifically damaging. Including plant crops.

Sustainable farming is generally mixed.

So no, making meat illegal is dumb.

Lostcat · 12/02/2025 17:51

CuddlyDodoToy · 12/02/2025 10:40

"Nature" never intended individuals to "hunt it themselves".

We are omnivores and we eat meat.

How we organise society to provide that meat is not and never has been dictated by nature.

eh? So you you don’t believe that “nature” intends you to hunt, but you do believe that “nature” intends you to eat meat?
