so I'm in no way, shape or form "woo" buuutttt just been sitting on side of my bed texting on my phone and my soundbar for TV (which I've had for 4 years with no issues) just decided to launch itself onto the floor, has hit my foot and cut it, picked it back up thinking how weird 🤷🤷 went back to my phone and a bottle of water, tube of face cream and a lip balm on top of my chest of drawers then launched themselves across the room, pretty freaked out by this point but still being rational in my head, picked phone back up carried on messaging back a friend, looked up to think what I was trying to type and felt a big tap /slap and literally saw my phone fly in the air and land other side of room, trying hard to think rationally but feeling pretty spooked right now
😭there's a rational reason for all this, yes???

The most haunted place in the UK is supposed to be Bodmin Jail. I hate the atmosphere there. I live in a 17thC cottage so if there are ghosts they're friendly ones

Deeperthantheocean · 10/02/2025 18:21

Did anything specific happen at that time? I know stories from trusted people about objects moving when a certain event happened to someone close. They said it was strange. Xx

im an ex-atheist who had a haunting. It was terrifying.

Why would a "haunting" have any bearing on whether you believe in the existence of the Divine or not? I really don't see how the two bear any relevance.

NameChangedForThis1985 · 10/02/2025 18:20

Weird stuff like this happened when I was growing up in my mum's house - like a flurry of this type of thing 3-4 times in a couple of weeks. Not long after my dad died suddenly aged 41. A clairvoyant (yes I do believe in that stuff) told me years later than it was an indication of the door being opened between the living and the dead.

Happened again in my mum's house last month (turns out at the time she was worried her cancer had come back). No, the bloody cat only went and died.

Sorry if that's freaked you out even more!!!

TheWombatleague · 10/02/2025 18:20

No, it really isn't difficult. You've got it entirely the wrong way around. The Catholic Church as an organisation is monstrous, but a lot of the individuals in it aren't. Leaving aside the systematic covering up of sexual abuse its entire history is littered with examples of horrific behaviour, from the burning of Joan of Arc, the burning of witches after Pope Innocent VIII declared, by papal bull, that witches were real and a threat (due to their involvement with Satan), the list is almost endless.

That's simply historical fact.

Sodthesystem · 10/02/2025 18:16

Surely the logical reason WOULD be - its some spooky shit.

I dont understand why anyone would doubt something they've literally seen with their own eyes, several times (let alone been smacked by it on the foot).

Not saying is old morag who used to live there but spooky shit in general has been happening to people for centuries so why wouldn't there be something in it?

Anyone in the house being messing about with a board or spells or something? Kids maybe?
Or have you brought any second hand furniture into the home? Or are you doing any renovations? All possible sources.

You gotta be clear and tell it to leave as it's not welcome or invited in your home.

Although, curve ball might be it's trying to warm you of a danger. Seems weird that you've had nothing for 15 years.

If you've rationalised yourself out of believing in any God, simply do the same to this. If you can't, that might be because there are more things in heaven and earth etc. etc. etc. I'm not being mean, but for any person to be utterly convinced that their view of the world is the correct one, just because it is what they believe, quite simply is unscientific. Perhaps you can just shift yourself to the position of dispassionate observer. The position would be that these things aren't happening to you - you are merely watching them occur. And then just observe without freaking out again. That's your coolest, calmest route. Experience whatever you experience as an observer, not a participant. I once saw a very rational family describe repeated hauntings - they were scientists and probably just as coldly rational as you see yourself - and they were able to believe in the movements and in fact in the haunting without a fundamental shift in how they thought of themselves. They simply accepted that they could not know everything.

That's the very thing though -

The vast majority of the "it isn't ghosts" crowd are being derided for being closed-minded, when in reality all they are saying is "I don't know what it is, it could be absolutely anything, but not ghosts". They are not offering implausible explanations, that's what believers do, all the "not ghosts" crowd are doing is ruling out one highly implausible cause but leaving every other explanation open.

It's the "It's definitely ghosts" crowd who are "closed-minded".

Sounds like your furniture and belongings have decided to join a rebellion against gravity, either that or you’ve got the world’s most aggressive poltergeist who really hates texting! On the rational side, maybe there’s a logical explanation, earth tremors, a wonky floor, or a very mischievous draught? But on the slightly spookier side, if your TV remote starts changing channels by itself, I’d consider negotiating peace terms with them. Maybe offer it a biscuit? In all seriousness, I hope your foot’s okay! And if your phone starts levitating again, maybe just politely ask whatever it is to chill out.

It's much more likely to be an earthquake, minor tremor or sink hole thing.

I experienced a minor earthquake in Manchester once (around 2003ish) and it felt like being pushed

Actually it was a little earlier than that maybe 2001 or 2002? My old friend (he died in November 2002) thought a wardrobe had fallen over upstairs…I was confused by my metallic room divider (lots of teeny ‘glitter’ balls)…shimmery and clattering and shaking about (in my own house, we were both in Chorlton, S. Manchester), and things just felt scary, ‘electric’ and unstable. Things ‘hurtling across the room’ though? No. No clue (the house moving comes to mind though).

I believe in the paranormal.

you need to firmly (and really really believe) to stop, tell it it’s not wanted and to leave immediately.

I had a naughty ghost who once turned on the stove. I was fuming and told it that it wasn’t funny and to leave immediately. Never happened again.

DeadSpace3 · 10/02/2025 18:06

Is your house located on an old Native American burial site? 😆

Could it be wind in the house?

ThingsPeopleDo · 10/02/2025 17:53

Ask a church if they will perform an exorcism. If they won't then try another. I would go to an independent Bible-believing church.

Get out of your house now and call an exorcist 😂

Elphame · 10/02/2025 16:08

Yes - I lost a nice pair of work shoes. Things disappear around here quite often! Sometimes they reappear, other times they don't.

I've only had something actually thrown at me once and that was enough! Normally everybody just sighs and gets on with it but the mysterious blood stains a few weeks ago do make me wonder if things are about to escalate!

Mysterious BLOOD STAINS ??

LoganberryWay · 10/02/2025 16:47

TheWombatleague · 10/02/2025 15:45

All of them? Or just the ones that pay to do the week long course at the Vatican in "Exorcism and the Prayer of Liberation" ?

"the priest must wear a type of embroidered white tunic called a surplice alongside a purple stole. The person who is possessed may be bound, and holy water should be used. The priest will make the sign of the cross on the person at several times throughout"

Exorcism and its use by a variety of religious practitioners to carry out abuse of children and other vulnerable people would suggest that a Catholic priest should be the last person you'd want to call.

Every organization, especially big ones like the church always have bad events . that happen. That's what comes with the territory of it being run by people.
I don't exactly blame people for thinking the church is evil given how the abuses have happened and has been covered up, or given all the people who have had first hand experience in it.
If I were them I'd have no reason to believe the church stood for anything good if that was my only exposure to it. In a strange way I would be right there with them if I never got to see the light that is present in the church.
This is why I am extremely careful about engaging in discussion about the Catholic Church with anyone who brings up sexual abuse, because I don't think they're really interested in having a conversation.
They are only interested in validating their own opinion, one way or another. Or spitting vitriol.
Or proving a point.
It is difficult to discuss the morality of an enormous organization.
People want to look at it as some kind of monolithic entity, but of course it's not.
For many people, they don't understand how an organization can be good and yet individuals in that organization do terrible things.

It's not my job to convince you (or anyone else) of anything, except to say that Catholic Priests do not consider themselves to be 'wizards'.

Any power they have comes from God, they are just a conduit.

Go on then, convince me that priests have mystical powers. One of my close friends is an ex Catholic Priest btw, so you'll have to find some compelling evidence to convince me he's actually a wizard.

ThreeLocusts · 10/02/2025 12:44

OP sorry about what the Catholic church did to you. And about the pointless troll hunting on this thread.

I had a very sharp, rational and quite anti-religious friend - I still miss her almost daily, four years after her death - who nevertheless had a couple of memories of things she couldn't explain. One involved seeing a ghostly apparition of her father, where it later turned out that at that precise time her father had been in mortal danger and thinking of his family.

F*ck knows how these things happen - and in the case of flying objects, a tremor (whether due to earthquake, subsidence or what) seems a likely explanation even if you can't get firm proof.

I wouldn't want a priest pattering about my home either. But I have improvised rituals in the past when I needed to put my mind at rest about something. Burn something that smells good, stare into a candle flame. Recite a good poem.

And keep your sense of humour...
