To say that prisons should be abolished altogether?

Rehabilitation and community justice models work better than locking people away. AIBU to think prisons are outdated and ineffective?

Oh my heart bleeds for them 🙄

Mine does, it’s very sad that so many young people have to resort to crime and see no way out of it.

Are you smoking crack??
Don't be ridiculous.

There is always an alternative option to drug dealing.

Sure but I haven’t been in that position and therefore can’t judge.

If you have no money, qualifications or help and there is a way out- especially if you’ve been raised around that behaviour- it’s understandable to me.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 09/02/2025 14:06

Ah quelle surprisé! Lobs in a grenade and scarpers. I know it’s a grey boring day, but go and do your homework or something.

Ideally neither although some drug dealers are also violent offenders or have indirectly caused harm and would need extensive rehabilitation.

A lot of dealers are just people families to feed and little other opportunities.

Oh my heart bleeds for them 🙄

Mamebea · 09/02/2025 14:04

Would that work for Ted Bundy?

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 09/02/2025 14:03

The guy who tried to bomb the tube station where I was working in 2005 can stay in Belmarsh until he dies as far as I care. He tried to set it off next to a toddler in a pushchair. How can he be rehabilitated when he truly believes what he did was God's will?

lnks · 09/02/2025 14:00

How long do you have left on your sentence, OP?

ThereIsATInWater · 09/02/2025 14:00

LemonPeonies · 09/02/2025 12:36

This would work fine, IF we brought back the death penalty for anyone dangerous. I.e. rapists, killers and nonces as none of those can be rehabilitated.

I think if there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever in guilt for those crimes, then yes, I think death penalty.
But not like in the US where they sit on death row for years, straight to death immediately week tops to get affairs in order.

Yes, I know not a popular opinion but 🤷‍♀️

Woman cannot be very violent as well and they certainly need locking up

That's a typical knee jerk reaction on par with the rest of the comments.

70% of female offenders have experienced domestic abuse and nearly 50% have committed a crime in order to fund someone else's drug habit. Over half have experienced childhood abuse.

There are violent women but they are largely incarcerated for petty crime. Most are serving short sentences, often for shoplifting. Which makes sense when you examine how women are disproportionately affected by the cost of living crisis and a third of children are in poverty.

What happens to their children when they're in prison? What about paying the rent or getting a job with a conviction?

samarrange · 09/02/2025 13:57

I think there is a case to be made for sending fewer non-violent criminals to prison, or perhaps giving much shorter prison sentences followed by community service.

What bugs me is how short some community sentences are, especially for white-collar crimes. 120 hours is 3 weeks of weeding graveyards — you can take annual leave for that, it's like a shit staycation. 2,000 hours, a year at the service of the community, now you're talking.

OnlyTheBravest · 09/02/2025 13:56

Have you been out in the world recently and actually met people. Some of them are awful and their rightful place is behind bars.

I would advocate building more prisons and incorporating more mandatory sentencing.

When you say no one should be imprisoned for drugs are you talking about users or dealers?

Booksaresick · 09/02/2025 13:51

No, absolutely not. They should be made stricter with less money spent on prisoners well-being etc. El Salvador model for the worst criminals.

Willoo · 09/02/2025 13:50

username299 · 09/02/2025 12:33

There's certainly an argument to be made regarding women in prison. We need to invest more in rehabilitation and keeping men out of prison.

Woman cannot be very violent as well and they certainly need locking up

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 09/02/2025 13:47

Some people need to be locked up. Some of them for life so others can live in peace.

aspidernamedfluffy · 09/02/2025 13:46

You're right OP, lets set the murders, rapists, drug dealers and terrorists free. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? 🙄

Cattreesea · 09/02/2025 13:44

Don't be daft.

You really want serial killers, rapists and child abusers to walk free because you think they can be 'rehabilitated'?

Criminals are put in prison as a punishment but also to protect the rest of us from their behaviour.

I would agree that more emphasis needs to be put on rehabilitation for people guilty of less serious crimes and that we should stop sending people to jail for not paying their TV licence or council tax or for protesting to highlight the threat of climate change, but dangerous criminals need to be safely put away.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/02/2025 13:42

AubernFable · 09/02/2025 13:31

Sort of- I don’t think anyone should be in prison for drugs or other non-violent offences, I even think a lot of violent criminals or murderers deserve intensive rehabilitation and a second chance. However rapists, serial killers, pedophiles and violent abusers need to be kept away from the public indefinitely.

When you say no one should be imprisoned for drugs are you talking about users or dealers?

PennyKitchen · 09/02/2025 13:40

Pressed yanbu by accident. Don't be ridiculous.

ruffler45 · 09/02/2025 13:39

Is this meant to be serious topic....or are you having a laugh..

andweallsingalong · 09/02/2025 13:39

Lol, not without major investment in mental health (50 years ago many prisoners would be institutionalised and in some cases it feels criminal that they are criminalised), policing and in particular stopping the drug trade, drug services and in particular residential rehab (in our area it is impossible to get a place straight from heroin and users need to first transition to methadone which is even harder to detox from, then reduce, then wait at least a year for a rehab place and that's if they are offered one) sadly for many prison is the best option for drug and alcohol rehab and stabilisation from committing crime, housing including supported housing as without housing many people are so low that they don't see any other way to live than drugs, alcohol and crime.

Then there are those people who are entrenched in violent behaviours, often learnt from good old dad who even with prison do a lot of harm to a lot of people.

FOJN · 09/02/2025 13:39

WearyAuldWumman · 09/02/2025 13:36

I couldn't decide whether the OP was advocating for that or letting the community deal with the criminal.

The thought of the community deciding never even crossed my mind. Can you imagine what that might look like for Levibell field? 😱

ToWhitToWhoo · 09/02/2025 13:38

No. I think that non-custodial sentences are more appropriate and effective for many crimes, and should be developed and used more. BUT there will be always be violent and dangerous people who absolutely need to be locked up for the safety of everyone else. Would you really have liked to see Peter Sutclffe walking the streets? Ian Huntley? Axel Rudukana?
