To liquidate everything when I get to 60 and live in luxury hotels until the cash runs out

Just thinking who wants to be old anyway plus I really resent the idea of all my money going to dodgy offshore small business owners (aka care home owners).

We'll see how it goes but I'm pretty excited about this.

It sounds great, I would do it if I had no kids.

However No kids, thank goodness (typing this from bed as I anticipate brunch) typing this from my bed as well, with coffee in hand brought to me by my 10yo… you can train them 😈

@Everythingisnumbersnow but what if you need actual care? If you have a stroke/develop dementia or some other joy of aging? It’s a brilliant idea if you live healthy and then die in your sleep at 75 but that’s not reality for most people 🤷‍♀️

Nor is a care home for most people. Plus if you've had a stroke or dementia, I'm not sure how much you'd actually know about whether it's the one the council provided for free, or a more expensive one that may not objectively be any better.

But in any case, for someone with a decent pension and large assets, they could invest these to provide a very good income and never run out of money.

Maybe not 'living in a suite at The Ritz' lifestyle, but a very nice lifestyle with travel, experiences, eating out and not having to work or do any of the mundane day to day 'household management' shit because you don't have a house to manage.

It's the end game of the FIRE movement - Financial Independence, Retire Early. Plus it doesn't have to be forever. After a couple of decades you could decide to settle down somewhere in a supported living facility or similar.

Everythingisnumbersnow · 08/02/2025 10:29

This all assumes I remain in good nick until 60 obviously

There will always be a care system for those who need it. Also, if you do end up self-funding, you’re likely going to end up living in a home with people who haven’t self-funded. So get that money spent.

Depends on who gets to define "need" though.

Hope you've got loads of dosh .....

Not knowing that end date is a killer 😁

My pension should be worth c. 30k a year so when the assets go I can reduce expectations and live on that until the end

My old neighbours were planning on selling in early 2020 to live permanently on cruise ships, unfortunately a global pandemic thwarted their plans and he got a bad bout of COVID and ended up in a nursing home until his recent death, she has sold the house, due to complete next week rather and is headed to Southampton to fulfill the dream

You may want to read "The Lotus Eater" by Somerset Maugham ....

Ok I will!

How many years could you afford and what would your plan be after that? Are you expecting your DH to die before you turn 60 or are you doing this together or separating? Just curious!

PoorLion · 08/02/2025 10:26

I like the idea of buying a large property with friends and getting carers in - like a co-op style care home. With chef cooked lunch and dinner, entertainment, guest accommodation for family visits, pets

AgualusasLover · 08/02/2025 10:26

I think this sounds fabulous. But after losing some people far to young I am very much more live in the moment than most people.

I also don’t think that even if you had children or people to inherit that should make a difference. I would much prefer my parents to live their best life, whatever that looks like and not consider my inheritance. I understand as parents we might like to, but again, I’d rather they helped/ I helped my kids whilst alive.

This just sounds fabulous OP.

Agree. Think it would drive me (more) demented to scrimp and save through last few good years only to be sitting next to people who didn't

Don't get me wrong I'd support a proper state model for care but we don't have one and fucked if I'm going to enrich Dave and Suzy of BVI

Don't people do this on cruise ships?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 08/02/2025 10:24

There was an elderly lady in the US who did something similar.

There is a hotel chain, I think Courtyard by Marriott, that offers free breakfast, and a free drink and dinner (one choice only) with their rooms. Frequent stayers got one night in four for free. The lady moved in and said she had free internet, daily cleaning, people to talk to as she got to know the staff well, maintenance and utilities included, people who checked in on her every day, access to a gym and swimming pool, she could send her laundry out to be cleaned, when she had friends or family visit they booked into the hotel. When she wanted a holiday, she just booked into another Marriott for a couple of weeks.

She said it was cheaper than paying a mortgage, renting, or going into a care home.

I plan on dying destitute and full of experiences. No one to inherit so very much plan on liquidating as we go.
Will be a fun ride for DH and I!

Luxury hotels don't come cheap. I wouldn't want to live in a bedroom but a suite costs c£2k per night at the Ritz. Life expectancy at age 60 is around 20 years for a female in the UK. How many nights would you be able to afford OP?

I obviously wouldn't be in a suite (unless I had some terminal diagnosis!)

Go for it!
but 60 is a bit young to do this imo
