Attending a christening and not sure if this is OTT.

Crikey...definitely too much for a normal Christening imo.
I wouldn't wear jeans but a nice knee length dress is enough.

thisfilmisboring123 · 08/02/2025 11:21

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a Christening and somebody was wearing jeans and a jumper.

It’s a celebration and a nice excuse to dress up. Why’s that sad?

I think the dress is beautiful but I think only you know if it’s ’too much’ or not. There are some Christening’s I’ve been to and I would wear that, others definitely not.
Depends on the other people going I think.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 08/02/2025 11:21

Plan B sounds good

Nannyfannybanny · 08/02/2025 11:20

No one in my village church turns up on a Sunday morning in jeans and jumper!

LushLemonTart · 08/02/2025 11:20

Nanny0gg · 08/02/2025 10:42

I've seen jeans at (formal) funerals and weddings

A bit of effort wouldn't kill people

😳

For a Christening? Absolutely not.

It's what I wear every week. Twice a week sometimes. You can tell the non churchgoers who are using the christening as an Instagram moment quite easily by their choice of clothes.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2025 11:18

Only ever seen people who don't regularly attend church turn up to christenings dressed like the dress in the OP

That's true in my experience. However, I do think it is nice to make an effort for such an occasion, but not with the OP's dress.

WashableVelvet · 08/02/2025 11:14

At our church (C of E), christenings are during the Sunday morning service and the congregation are mostly in jeans and jumpers, but the family/friends would often dress up - for some families like this, others a different smart vibe, others a bit more low key. Would just depend on the family and what kind of do they had planned after.
At this time of year you’d want a warm layer on top at our church though - the heating would be on full blast but the ceilings are high so you’d need a blazer or something.

Shocked at the jeans and jumper suggestions.
A christening is a dress up do imo/ experience. All the chaps in suits and ladies in frocks. Never seen anyone in jeans.

Lovely frock but maybe a bit too evening wear-y. That said I don’t think I’d notice or comment, it’s only that I’m considering it.

Some comments above about over dressing making you seem unfamiliar or out of place or something but I think dressing up and setting the bar high is fine tbh.

Jeans and jumpers normal for me because church is an ordinary weekly activity for me in normal clothes. It's not a fashion parade.

I did wear a dress rather than my normal jeans for my own children's christenings but a fairly plain jersey one from JoJo Maman Bebe with breastfeeding access.

People who dress for christenings like they are dressing for a wedding are going OTT. Only ever seen people who don't regularly attend church turn up to christenings dressed like the dress in the OP

Fencehedge · 08/02/2025 10:05

People don't really dress up for a church christening though, unless things are different in your family. Lovely dress.

I agree. Christenings generally aren't as dressy an occasion as weddings are. The dress is lovely, but not something I would wear to a christening. I have never seen any members of a christening party in jeans either.

I think a warm coat or jacket is important though as churches are not warm.

I admit to finding a bit sad that there are fewer occasions to dress up for these days.

NewDogOwner · 08/02/2025 11:07

Too sexy.

Slobberchops1 · 08/02/2025 11:04

Not for a christening, you need something smart casual not a fancy evening dress

JMSA · 08/02/2025 11:02

Doggymummar · 08/02/2025 10:12

I was gonna say, jeans and jumpers for Sunday morning church but I was beaten to it.

For a Christening? Absolutely not.

JMSA · 08/02/2025 11:01

It's lovely.

SnoopysHoose · 08/02/2025 11:01

They're not quite "leggings and jumpers", but people do seem to wear jeans and a nice top...
seriously? suits for the men, nice dress for the women.
Honestly jeans and a 'nice top' is the nice too a bloody tunic? MN at its best, everyone so to be drab

SnoopysHoose · 08/02/2025 10:59
  • I'm old fashioned and think a Christening is about a child and the religious significance of the ceremony. Are Christenings now fashion shows ? How sad* How miserable, it's a celebration and why not dress up? Any christenings I've been to everyone was very well dressed, not quite to wedding level but still very glam.
shortcakesnake · 08/02/2025 10:57

I wouldn't wear it, its more of an evening party dress and it could be seen as a bit tacky to wear it to a christening. However its really up to you, I've been to funerals where some women dress like they are going on a big night out so I'm not sure what is considered ok these days.

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 10:54

@TheAzureSwan no need to apologise!

I had a friend who organised a baptism for the sole purpose of getting their child a place in a certain school. They didn't attend church and are not religious. They still planned a 'knees up' after. It all seemed very pointless and a bit of a farce!.......so they do live amongst us 🤣

Globusmedia · 08/02/2025 10:52

I've never been to a Christening that took place during the general service, it's always been a separate thing. Everybody has always somewhat dressed up.

I think the dress is nice but the length makes it a bit more evening than daytime. I'd go for something a bit shorter.

TheAzureSwan · 08/02/2025 10:49

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 10:38

@TheAzureSwan you could say the same about a church wedding!

I'm about to be god parent and I've been to various church classes with the family of my god child. Everyone is taking it seriously. The family attend that church weekly anyway. Treating the occasion as a celebration, does not take away from the significance of the event.

Even the royal family dress up and celebrate a child's christening!

Well actually I think people getting married in a religious ceremony in a church or similar when neither of the celebrants have any religious faith or beliefs is the height if hypocrisy. And yes I do think the absolute obsession surrounding what people wear for a wedding is ridiculous nonsense.

But actually after I commented on your family tradition up thread I did regret my post a bit because really how your family celebrate a Christening is really none of my business.
And it's actually pleasing to read your subsequent post about how you all take the Christening seriously as a religious sacrament. So I apologise.

Ethylred · 08/02/2025 10:48

Gorgeous. Totally wear it and ignore the pearl-clutchers.

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 10:48

@Lamelie m. I agree. I'd pair it a nice, plain formal coat for the service! It's a lovely dress!

HappydaysArehere · 08/02/2025 10:47

I like it. It’s dark and smart.

KvotheTheBloodless · 08/02/2025 10:47

It's evening wear, not really appropriate for a daytime do IMO. That said, you won't look terribly out of place if you do wear it, just a bit overdressed because it's full length.

Lamelie · 08/02/2025 10:44

JustAnotherManicMomday · 08/02/2025 10:35

Looks like an even split. Going to look for a plan B today.

Don’t! It’s a lovely dress. Wear it with a plainer long coat in case the church is cold or everyone else is in jeans and jumpers. I always dress up. It’s a conversation starter, it brings joy and makes me feel great.
