Attending a christening and not sure if this is OTT.

I'm old fashioned and think a Christening is about a child and the religious significance of the ceremony.
Are Christenings now fashion shows ?
How sad.

I see Nanny McPhee is back.

That’s an evening dress. Christenings are day time events.

YouAreAll · 08/02/2025 12:26

In my little town, turning up to a christening like this would raise some eyebrows. It would be massively overdressed. From the responses from others, perhaps elsewhere you will be fine! I think if you have to ask then perhaps it is too much.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/02/2025 12:25

It's not ALL about what people wear. But it shows respect to wear something nice.

I agree. But the dress the OP posted wasn't "something nice". It was a dress designed to bring attention to the wearer at an evening doo.

Does this mean you think a Christening is all about what people are wearing then?

I suspect it is transparent if the light is behind you.
Nice dress for a party where you want to make a statement about you. Not so good for a christening, where the focus is on welcoming a child into (whichever) Church, with the attendant important ritual.

Depends on your church. My church was very mixed, some wore formal clothes and hats to service, teenagers wore whatever their fashion fad was at the time, most people looked kempt and made an effort. Christenings were held during normal services and those that stood up with the child would make an extra effort. Acceptance of all and respect for the occasion is the christian attitude.
op your dress is lovely, are you a parent/godparent standing up with the child? If so, tone it down from evening wear with a long coat. Churches are often cold anyway.

biscuitsandbooks · 08/02/2025 11:52

I think that's totally inappropriate for a christening.

It's nice, but not for church.

MyDeftDuck · 08/02/2025 11:51

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/02/2025 10:10

Christenings usually take place during Sunday morning service. Most of the congregation will be in jeans and jumpers. Just wear a nice day dress and a coat . Churches can be cold!

This.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/02/2025 11:51

That isn't a christening dress. That's a night time do dress.

Grapesandcheseseplease · 08/02/2025 11:50

In my circle and church the dress would be fine. Christenings are like small weddings to us so we do get very dressed up.

GCAcademic · 08/02/2025 11:50

Bear in mind also that a lot of churches are freezing at this time of year.

godmum56 · 08/02/2025 11:48

I blooming bet it is see through if the light is right.

Grammarnut · 08/02/2025 11:45

Very nice. Accessorize, though.

I steward at our Catholic Church … and you get a real mixed bag of outfits.
We have some local Irish Traveler families, who are very dressed up. We have some local families who come very dressed down. TBH, I’ve never been that bothered - would prefer shoulders covered, but hey ho.
The priest doesn’t really notice, he’s doing 40 christenings a year.

It’s a family occasion, and a great celebration.. don’t overthink it…and have fun.

What a lovely, measured response!

Op is asking if it is appropriate, not is cutting edge of style?
That's not sad!

Op, find out what others are wearing, if they are getting dressed up, it's fine. If not you may feel a bit over dressed.

Wear what you like! But please, please do not chat, look at your phone or give the impression of being bored through the religious bits, it will last 30 minutes or so if a stand alone christening, an hour if in the service, respect that it means something to others.

I work for a church and I'm so fed up with the appalling behaviour of guests at baptisms, the families aren't much better including inviting dozens of people to a small country church without telling us so we don't have enough seats put out nor service sheets printed and not offering a donation to cover the expenses of the last minute printing etc. Most the guests are visibly bored, disrupt the service talking (when during our regular service especially it's so rude) and they have taken the "good seats" so the regular congregation are stuck in the stacking chairs at the back, the ones funding the "beautiful medieval church" that the guests are taking photos (during the service) of. If the collection was nice and full, there would at least be one good thing but no, they don't even put in a pound (and yes we have a card reader option Grin) ok rant over.

This does seem rather miserable tbh, as are all the other posts about people being hypocritical treating a christening as a celebration. I'm not christened and neither are my kids, and i didn't get married in a church either but I don't think the church can have it both ways. If it's entirely religious and nothing secular can ever be mixed up with it then what's it doing still being such a big part of our constitution, education system, land ownership etc. For centuries our ancestors basically had very little choice but to have significant life events marked in a church so they are of historical significance and meaningful places to welcome a new baby into the family, and if the family are themselves religious then of course people want to support their family and friends by attending something so important to them - I would hope to be similarly welcome at a bah mitzvah and not be made to feel I was taking up a seat that I should have left for a regular. It's first come first served presumably and the christening guests likely got there early.

thehorsesareallidiots · 08/02/2025 11:37

I think it looks cheaply made and poor quality in the picture and would look cheaply made and poor quality IRL.

CorsicaDreaming · 08/02/2025 11:30

I think it could look lovely in the church for the christening if you wear a coat over the top open like a smart jacket – and churches can often be chilly - then take it off if there is an after the service lunch or similar. But I think you could just wear the dress as it is a very dark smart colour.

it is a lovely dress and I think it's a shame people never seem to dress up as much anymore. Lovely colour and although the sleeves are lacy, it looks like the body of the dress is solid and would look very smart.

Lurkingandlearning · 08/02/2025 11:29

Not what you asked but judging by the way the fabric hangs at the split, I think it's very badly made and would look really cheap and shabby IRL.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 08/02/2025 11:27

The colour is lovely. The lace and the split are not quite the thing for a daytime event IMHO.
