Attending a christening and not sure if this is OTT.

Well I may end up back to plan and with a leather jacket to make it more casual and flats or a tiny heel. Will decide in the morning i guess. Waiting on a friend going with me to decide what shes going with then will make a final decision. That way if shes casual I will be, if she could be co sidereal over dressed then if we're arriving together we may as well be in the same boat.

You've chosen select quotes there. Obviously I think it's disrespectful to use your phone, but the whole ong they've invited guests and I've had to print out extra songsheets and chairs is giving off unwelcoming vibes, yes. And I don't agree that attending church as an atheist is "hypocritical" (I know that was another poster). Churches fulfill different roles other than the purely religious.

Yes exactly. I am not Christian but love learning about other religions. Should I not have gone to friends’ weddings and christenings because I am not a Christian. Goodness.

. But the dress the OP posted wasn't "something nice". It was a dress designed to bring attention to the wearer at an evening doo.
Bring attention? are women not allowed to dress well and look good?
Have we all to live in the MN leggings and tunic, never cut our hair?
Jesus wept at the prissy bores on here.
Any christening I have attended more would be said about scruffs turning up in jeans and the 'nice top'

Agree.

I think that people who say this is the OP ‘drawing attention’ to herself, aren’t the type to go out or dress up much. I live a life where most people dress up for most occasions. So nobody would bat an eyelid at somebody coming to a christening like this.

If you are surrounded by people who live in casual clothes and sportswear, and a nice top with jeans is the epitome of dressing up, then I can see why you might find this dress ‘attention-seeking’.

It’s freezing. It’s February. It’s a ridiculous outfit.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 08/02/2025 19:22

I’d say yes, dress it down with flat shoes.

DappledThings · 08/02/2025 19:21

JustAnotherManicMomday · 08/02/2025 19:17

Is this one any better or am just going with jeans and a top? I generally don't do these things very often but it's the child of a friend of over 20 years. Don't see them all the time, yet I was always raised to make an effort for occassions.

Definitely better, if you have a cardigan to go over it. Partly because you'll be freezing and partly because it still looks a bit weddingy otherwise.

JellyWatch · 08/02/2025 19:20

I think it’s absolutely fine. If you’re comfortable in it, wear it.

Could you stretch to two straps?

I like the first one better. Do you have a nice wool coat to wear over for the service?

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 19:17

@quantumbutterfly to be fair, there is a quote in the bible about the wearing of mixed fabrics, so I'm surprised that no one has used this yet, as a reason to not wear the dress.

Thou shalt not wear viscose 🤣

Actual quote below.

Leviticus 19:19 ESV
You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material.

Why not?! Baggy cotton only for god's house?

The Lord prefers biodegradable fibres...

LittleBearPad · 08/02/2025 16:16

Regardless of whether people should dress up for a christening a tight long lace dress that looks like it’s made of viscose isn’t suitable for a christening.

@DappledThings
Can I ask what age you are as I'm mystified by your attitude to dress and women in general.

Really? Not sure what's mystifying about it. I'm 45. If not sure about a dress code I'd always rather be under than over dressed.

Still don't consider a christening of any background to be an event formal enough to mean a wedding/day at the races/evening party dress will look anything than a bit daft.

verityveritas · 08/02/2025 15:16

I think this depends on two factors, if it's a more traditional type of service or more modern service, second consideration is if you are a Godparent or just a guest. If it's the former of both considerations then I think the dress is fine, if it's the latter, I think you might feel over dressed.

Who is talking about turning up in jeans , jumpers, and hoodies?
Certainly not me.
Believe or not there is a happy medium between going to a church ceremony looking scruffy and going dressed for a cocktail party.
We live in a very secular world. Churches are, or should be, somewhere people go for primarily spiritual reasons.
We were taught that going into a church was going into God's house and so you should dress in a respectful manner.

several people have suggested jeans and a Jumper actually (I know you didn’t).

But you absolutely know what it was about your post that riled me. Don’t be disingenuous!

DappledThings · 08/02/2025 15:02

Newbie8918 · 08/02/2025 14:57

@DappledThings don't be silly now. The picture was an illustration of how people can dress formally, yet modesty for christenings. It a similar level of formality as racing or day time wedding guest.

I suppose I better tell the scores of guests at every christening that I've been to that they are dressing incorrectly!

If you choose to dress more casually that's up to you but it doesn't mean that others are wrong or inappropriate.

Well yeah, in the end it does come down to the type of event OP has been invited to and as we have no information on that neither of us can possibly know how likely she is to be dressed inappropriately or not.

On the balance of probabilities I'd say it's less likely she's been invited to one as formal as a wedding. Even if she had been I'd say that particular dress is too tight.

All a matter of opinion. Mine being that even the Royals look somewhat overdressed for their own Christenings.

@DappledThings I would say 'making an effort' rather than 'fancy' 🤷‍♀️

I would saying dressing as if going to a Royal christening for a standard church one is definitely fancy (and I maintain inappropriately so). But maybe OP's invitation is indeed to St George's Chapel at Windsor.

TheAzureSwan · 08/02/2025 14:46

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2025 14:16

Do you feel the same about weddings? Wonder why the brides mother doesn’t turn up in jeans and s Jumper? Or go to a funeral in a hoody? Why not go to work in a dressing gown, after all work is about getting work done, not a fashion show 🙄

@DappledThings and as I said, not in my circle. People dress up. In fact it's very similar, formal attire to a day at the races. Men in suits and ladies in formal but respectful dresses. Some ladies even wear hats (grand mothers mainly).

You have described a very casual christening with a casual buffet back at yours. That's what your circle does. If someone from your circle attended my christening THEY would probably stand out as being rather under dressed.

Below is how various members of the royal family dress for family christenings. The level of formality that I've seen at christenings is equal to this.

Fancy!
