Attending a christening and not sure if this is OTT.

@JustAnotherManicMomday hope you had a lovely day yesterday whatever you chose to wear! I do hope that you wore your beautiful dress with pride 💚

SillyOldBucket · 10/02/2025 09:42

I love it! It is quite dressy but it's also classy and not revealing in any way and people tend to dress up a bit for a Christening, so I think it's fine.

Mygrandkidsaregreat · 10/02/2025 02:29

I think it’s perfect for a christening.
it seems so many people dress down in jeans and tops ,however this dress looks smart and like you’ve given the occasion;some thought, and not just pulled on ‘off down the pub ‘ gear.
I went to a funeral of someone and close family were in jogging bottoms and trainers.Their granny would have had a fit,it wasn’t appropriate clothes for a grandmas funeral.IMO

Plain, simple, classy with an air of responsibility
who knew a plain shift dress said responsibility 🤷🏼‍♀️
did you have responsible shoes to match? maybe a responsible wrap/pashmina?

A responsible cardi perhaps? 🤣

Missj25 · 09/02/2025 22:59

Who actually dresses “ responsible “ going to Church 😂😂
Sexy All the way Bitches !!!!! 🤣🤣

Onelifeonly · 09/02/2025 22:11

I'd say no. Too fancy and unsuited to the occasion.

It’s a ‘no’ from me. When I was Godparent to my twin nephews I wore a shift dress. Plain, simple, classy with an air of responsibility and, whilst we didn’t consult, my SIL sister also wore something similar.

The dress you posted would be great for a wedding IMHO, but too dressy for a christening.

Edited

I used the term as well - because it's difficult to convey the type of smart that I'd expect at a christening but it would be smart and kind of demure. A bit like Sunday best but no longer worn every Sunday. Anyway, people can wear what they like but if you post asking for guidance on what would be considered the norm isn't it fair enough that people try to answer that as best they can?

Careful now, you used the term Sunday Best, that’s not going to go down well with a particular poster 😁

Pippyls67 · 09/02/2025 20:50

A teensy bit phwar for a Christening. Stunning dress tho. Agreed.

ExercicenformedeZ · 09/02/2025 19:33

BunnyLake · 09/02/2025 18:35

Chill. I don’t know why it’s hit a nerve so much. I’m not even the only poster to have used the phrase.

Well, yours was the comment I happened to see! I still think that it is an absurd phrase to use about a christening held during the 21st Century. It is an historical phrase.

SnoopysHoose · 09/02/2025 18:38

@ExercicenformedeZ
Mindful and demure 🤣
Probably half the folk on here think cropped shapeless trousers in bleuch colour and a tunic is the epitome of style.
Anyone remotely smart or fancy is a desperate for attention harlot!
Going by some of the horrid suggestions in S&B I see, it seems a lot of people have no clue how to dress.

I'm sure they do. Or maybe even a nice pair of Lucy and Yuks. Bleugh!!

Missj25 · 09/02/2025 19:09

I think it’s fantabulous 😊..
And who doesn’t want to look & Feel Fab !!!!!
It’s a day for celebrating 🥳
Wear it OP 🙌

Lulu49 · 09/02/2025 18:59

It's lovely, wear it xx

September1013 · 09/02/2025 18:48

Seems a bit OTT for a christening - it’s more of an evening/cocktail dress.

MellersSmellers · 09/02/2025 18:46

Not sure many of these contributors have been to church recently! Jeans and leggings - No!
This is an evening dress, not for a morning church service. Otherwise lovely.
Out of consideration for the parents I think smart and respectful, but not Wedding posh.

The fact that you mentioned it at all is bizarre. If, as you say, it is in the past, why bring it up now? And as I said, even my 82 year old mother thinks that term is incredibly old fashioned. To the point of being obsolete.

Chill. I don’t know why it’s hit a nerve so much. I’m not even the only poster to have used the phrase.

Urgh, bore off and cheer up.

Sounds like you are one of these irritating " Give us a smile love " , " cheer up it'll never happen" people.
People expressing opinions that you don't like is extremely boring isn't it?
Everyone should think the same shouldn't they?

DappledThings · 09/02/2025 15:58

Newbie8918 · 09/02/2025 15:52

@DappledThings

And this is what I think people are struggling to grasp

'I don't think anyone wore anything to our children's christenings that they wouldn't have worn on a normal Sunday and they'd have looked odd if they did dress for a wedding for them.'

In my circle you'd look ridiculous if you didn't make an effort and you turned up for a celebration, in what you would wear on a normal Sunday. That's YOUR way. Doesn't mean that it's right. That's just how your specific group is.

Indeed. And I did admit about 24 hours ago that given the complete lack of info from OP we have no idea what type of event it actually was.

Invited to a christening at another church I would wear a dress but it would be a jersey one in a bright pattern. One that I'd be comfortable wearing to the office. I wouldn't ever feel ridiculous at a christening of any type dressed like that no matter how much anyone might think i appeared underdressed.

ExercicenformedeZ · 09/02/2025 15:54

Newbie8918 · 09/02/2025 15:43

@ExercicenformedeZ however I am highly offended about your back to the office shouts! 🤣 I am also very inclined to turn my camera off in favour of some stretchy kecks and a shapeless top 🤣 maybe this is why I like to dress up for events 🤣🤣🤣

Ha, no offence meant! And I completely agree with you about everything.

I have to laugh at all the frumps on here. I bet that they would dress in a 'smart top' and baggy trousers to their own wedding. I would far rather have someone dressed in the OP's green dress at my hypothetical baby's christening, than someone dressed like a boring frump. Not that I would really care either way: as you all say, it is about the baby, not about what people are wearing.

Honestly though! My friends and family tend to treat christenings like a semi formal celebration! Everyone dresses nicely. My grandma (attends mass daily!) will even trot out a nice hat for a christening.

I'm here for it! I can't imagine a single one of the clutching their pearls because of the split or the length of the underskirt. Jesus wept! Literally!
