To wonder what would happen if LL were ever released?

I'm not intending to state whether I think she is innocent or guilty but I am just curious as to how her life would look if she were released.
Even if her conviction was overturned, it's highly unlikely she'd be able to go back to a regular life, or would she? Would she walk away with no convictions?

She might acquire a new identity curtesy of the state.

If she was found innocent and it’s a miscarriage of justice why would she need a new identity?

With most miscarriages of justice, it becomes clear that somebody else must have committed the crime (because there is usually no question that there was a crime). Someone else confesses, or we hear that the police had other DNA samples that matched the scene and lost them, or something like that. And maybe it's established that the person who was convicted was mentally vulnerable, or fitted up (rarer these days, but my goodness, the 1970s...), or had other convictions and so appeared guilty but didn't commit this particular crime.

But in this case, the complexity is that if LL didn't murder the babies, then nobody did. There would be no reopening of the police case to find "the real killer". The entire case for her defence is that the babies died of a combination of natural causes and substandard care, some of it perhaps her fault but most of it to do with the work environment. So the people who currently believe she is guilty will probably not change their minds unless they read, and are convinced by, the extensive scientific evidence, which is quite a big ask of most people. You could have half the UK population believing that a murderer of a dozen or more children has been let loose and might be living on their street. Quite a few of those might be family members, at one or two levels of remove, of the dead children.

For what it's worth I think she would need a new identity and either to be resettled abroad, or as a minimum for it to be widely reported and believed that she had been resettled abroad.

I think Maxinr Carr should be left alone now. She acted in a very foolish manner but apparently had no idea that Ian Huntley was responsible for the murders, she's done her time and should be able to get on with her life.

That's she had no idea he was involved isnt certain. She gave him an alibi. Which was a lie.

I hope she would be OK. I also hope it might herald an end to toxic and hierarchical NHS cultures where standards are terrifically poor and senior people look for a scapegoat.

If she didn't do it I hope it is proven and a statue of her goes up in the foyer of every hospital as a reminder of what toxic cultures bring.

They’ll never do that thank god there’s nothing to prove her innocence 100%. It would be massively insulting and triggering to the parents of the babies who were killed or suffered. She’s not a saint or a martyr, innocent or guilty.

Blinkingbonkers · 06/02/2025 21:50

A lot of people keep stating that “there was a really long trial and she was found guilty so she must be” - the whole point of the press conference etc is that the evidence used in the trial was not correct!! Mass negligence looks the more culpable party with a dose of cover up. Not only does the nhs look, yet again, like the train wreck it is to the rest of the world but our justice system is also seriously called into question. Total mess.

Is negligence as bad as murder. I would imagine the sense of loss being the same but no one particular to direct your anger at or no one taking the blame.
And negligence has been rife in recent years.

The issue though is 'who was negligent'

Some poor sap may well end up as the fall guy as it went wrong on their watch BUT those over them knew what was happening and took no action.

Think Herald of Free Enterprise

I would imagine she would need a new identity and likely to move abroad (eg Australia) to live any form of slightly normal life if she's innocent. Though even then I'd imagine she'd spend the rest of her life on edge.
If she's innocent then as well as being horrific for her it's added unimaginable trauma to the parents. Whilst obviously the pain of loss is hard enough, I would imagine thinking its murder compared to negligence would add an entire extra level of devastation and trauma.
And it's not something there will ever be a 100% answer on, so that trauma isn't fixable even if she is deemed innocent.

I don't think she'd get compensation even if later found not guilty. Unless maybe the NHS was subsequently found guilty of something like corporate manslaughter.

I think she would.

She's known now (inter)nationally and judgements have already been formed.

She'll probably never be able to work again because of the stigma and her mental health will be in tatters.

The miscarriage of justice would affect her life more than several lifetimes of prison sentences ever would.

I don’t think it’s a case of whether “someone else did it”. It whether “it” (murder) was done at all, or whether the babies died due to natural causes (as per the original coroners reports) or whether a poorly run unit was a contributing factor. The podcast series Lucy Letby: Was there ever a crime? is worth a listen.

That is a more likely, alternative, I agree.

Cheesandcrackers · 06/02/2025 21:14

He'd be wise to not let her to mind him when ill.

I do agree there. Would we want someone babysitting our kids who has been in the frame for murder?

Loopylooni · 06/02/2025 21:16

@Pleasehelp12345 I thought Maxine Carr knew and just covered it all up.

Tell that to the murdered children’s families

Is a person who is the victim of a miscarriage of justice entitled to a witness protection type of new identity? If so she would have to make the choice between disappearing and making a lot of money from interviews and book deals etc. It's an awful and difficult position to be in if she is truly innocent. I can't even imagine the mental torment.

MrGoldfarts · 06/02/2025 21:07

Cheesandcrackers · 06/02/2025 20:59

Even is LL is not totally guilty I doubt she can be proven totally innocent. However she won't lack book deals and Netflix offers so she'll be fine. And some dumbass guy will end up with her so she'll be fine there too.

This

I imagine she would be given a new name and national insurance and most likely advised to move elsewhere. The threat of vigilantism would be a concern I guess. A lot might depend on whether she is acquitted due to lack of strong conviction or whether it turns out someone else did it and she is exonerated entirely . Though even with the latter would there still be some who would insist she should have stayed in prison? I imagine she would want to start afresh in any case. Too many horrible memories being Lucy Letby and living in Cheshire area.

I presume she'd need a complete change of identity and a massive compensation package

There will always be those who believe she was guilty no matter what and she would be hounded by them, or worse.

If she is innocent her life is ruined anyway

Why should she change her identity if found not guilty? She would have the right to live as herself.

It’s funny how people always bring Maxine Carr up. She’s local to me and everyone knows it’s her. Not “is just guessing” - it is actually her. They get a change of identity not a new face !

Really?!

Can I ask a question? Obviously not revealing specific details but is she just treated like a local and are people friendly to her?

Lucy Letby - a nurse convicted of murdering several babies in her care.

Seven babies she’s accused of murdering, and six attempted murders. I think there were others that the jury couldn’t reach a verdict on.

I am still perplexed that the only witness to the defence was the hospital plumber.

I believe she’s guilty.
