To think it’s unfair that some people get inheritance while others start with nothing?

Isn’t inheritance just another way of keeping wealth in the hands of the privileged? AIBU to think we should heavily tax or abolish inheritances altogether?

I suspect you might think differently if you were on the receiving end!

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/02/2025 14:24

Is this news to you? Life isn’t fair. It never has been.

user04 · 06/02/2025 14:25

Move to a communist dictatorship and they will be happy to take everything you own when you die (and during your lifetime). Lets everyone share everything and the world will be a happy place.

Rickrolypoly · 06/02/2025 14:25

Oh get a grip.

Abolish inheritance? Who should get my money when I die then?

chelseahealyslips · 06/02/2025 14:25

You expect you wouldn't be saying that if you were the wealthy one now would you?

nearlylovemyusername · 06/02/2025 14:26

Is this you Rachel?

Comedycook · 06/02/2025 14:26

Life's not fair...stop the press! This is brand new information.

I got an inheritance...I don't think it's fair my parents died young. That's life though.

Some people lose parents young...some live for ages.

Some have rich parents, poor parents, kind parents, abusive parents.

Some people are born in war zones...some people are born in peaceful countries.

Welcome to the world

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 06/02/2025 14:26

It’s very unfair like many aspects of life. But we have inheritance tax to help.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/02/2025 14:27

Who gets the money then?

HebeHerbivore · 06/02/2025 14:28

My parents were fairly poor, not privileged at all and worked bloody hard to own their own home and paid taxes all their lives, damn right they passed it onto us when they died. We will do the same to our children when the time comes.

Thedisconnect · 06/02/2025 14:28

Exactly, do you leave your money to the state? What a daft post. Where's the incentive for anyone to work hard??

yakamoza · 06/02/2025 14:29

What kind of inheritance do you consider a privilege for the wealthy that needs to be heavily taxed or abolished? The sort of inheritance when someone leaves a Downton Abbey kind of estate to their kids OR an ordinary home that mum and dad have been working hard for all their lives, saving hard and cutting back on various things they may have enjoyed instead that they would like to leave to their kids when it's their time to go?

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole · 06/02/2025 14:29

Why is it unfair though ? I can't see why it is unfair that people have worked hard their whole lives and left it to their children, grandchildren or whoever. It's their money to do whatever they want with surely ?

MistyF · 06/02/2025 14:29

YABVU
Why can't you find a way to earn money and then buy a house/build inheritance, then leave that to your kids?
I had inheritance and in future, I always viewed I will build my wealth, then leave that wealth to my successors/kids/family...

I voted for wrong answer in the poll, tho.

namechangeGOT · 06/02/2025 14:29

Yes. Yes you are incredibly unreasonable. Keep your hands off other peoples money yeah?

GreenYellowBrown · 06/02/2025 14:30

OP, you’re so funny. You should start a career in comedy 😝 😂 😂

friendlycat · 06/02/2025 14:30

I’m afraid life isn’t fair and there’s inequality all over the world.

There’s already inheritance tax. Would you like all the proceeds of other people’s hard work to 100% be removed and returned to the government?

Ilovemyshed · 06/02/2025 14:30

What is really unfair is when people work hard all their life, save and build a fund of money/ property, then have to pay for elderly care and lose the ability to pass it into relatives, when others who have just taken from the state all their life have care handed to them.

Caterina99 · 06/02/2025 14:30

Is 40% inheritance tax (I know it’s after the various exemptions) not it being heavily taxed?

If I work hard for my money then why shouldn’t I be able to leave it to my children (or whoever I want)? Otherwise what is the incentive to work hard or ever save anything?

Im not saying everyone does work hard, and a lot of financial circumstances is down to luck of course, but you can’t distinguish between the 2 and decide who is worthy of leaving an inheritance and who isn’t.

1apenny2apenny · 06/02/2025 14:30

So you think it's unfair that my children will inherit from their parents despite the fact that we have both worked hard, when we were younger don't 2 jobs, and gone without and cut our cloth? No doubt you will say we are 'lucky'!

Life is hard and soooooo unfair. We've paid our taxes, never claimed benefits etc. Focus on how the government waste money and subsidise big business.

Lavender14 · 06/02/2025 14:30

As a lone parent I will do everything in my power to make sure ds is set up as well as possible in the event of my death via inheritance. That's my job as his mother. Why you'd want me to do otherwise is beyond me.

GreenYellowBrown · 06/02/2025 14:31

I’d love to know why the recipients of inheritances should pay further tax on money that the giver has already been taxed on? Any thoughts?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/02/2025 14:31

Don't be so ridiculous.

Getitwright · 06/02/2025 14:32

Being born is a lottery. Some win big time, others end up on the hard road to nowhere, often compounded by things beyond their control. All you can do is to try and make the most of yourself, work hard when you need to, grab opportunities as they arise, and think deeply about life changing aspects such as education, a career, forming good relationships, having children. Inheriting something, be it large or small comes under opportunity, and does need careful thought, having a lot of wealth can still go badly wrong. Conversely, a lot of people from poorer backgrounds work very hard to give their offspring a good start in life, so why shouldn’t that be passed on? As I said life can be a lottery, good and bad at all stages.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/02/2025 14:32

Don't worry, this is MN where everyone ends up in a luxury care home spending all their kids' hundreds of thousands inheritance and you should be damned thankful if you are left 20p in the will.
