To think it’s unfair that some people get inheritance while others start with nothing?

Isn’t inheritance just another way of keeping wealth in the hands of the privileged? AIBU to think we should heavily tax or abolish inheritances altogether?

Can I just remind you that inheritance = a dead parent/s or grandparents?

I was “lucky” enough to inherit something when my dad unexpectedly dropped down dead one day at a relatively young age. So the money he’d been saving for his old age, retirement, care costs etc never got spent on that because he didn’t live to get to retirement.

Do you think it’s fair that some people get to have their parents or grandparents around for longer than others?

There are people whose parents die young and they get nothing.

Frankly it utterly sucks to have a parent die young, but money does help make life easier in practical terms and practical terms do matter. Living in a house in a nice area or in a sink estate makes a giant difference in the quality of life generally.

All the outrage here about the OP pointing out that it's not fair does seem to ignore that fact.

But it's life, and living under some awful communistic regime would be worse. Still, the less the rich/poor divide, the better for all of society.

HamandCheeseSandwich · 06/02/2025 17:20

Oh no, who am I going to give my blanket to now? My nana made it for mum in the 1950s, gave it to mum when she first moved out, who gave it to me when I did......and I was going to give it to my DC...

I'll chuck it away as inheritance is to be abolished.

I pay enough towards the overly abused welfare state

🙄 Very few people have paid enough for their education, their state pension and free healthcare. That's the problem....

Yet a vast number of people have paid nothing for these services and never intend doing!

Greywhippet · 06/02/2025 17:15

OP I knew you would get trashed left right and centre but I agree, inheritance hard bakes inequality. The housing market is insane in this country and that is another factor.

You don't work hard to build up a stash to leave to family.

You work hard to get an income allowing you to have a good life - holidays, pets, experiences etc.

I'm not planning on dying with money in the bank. I'm hoping to enjoy any money before I go. You can't take it with you.

No, but lots of people work hard in order to look after their loved ones.

Pinkpupsx · 06/02/2025 17:12

So you’re telling me that despite the fact I’ve been frugal my whole life, unlike my siblings or other people I know who spend money as quickly as they receive it, when I pass away, all the money I’ve made the conscious decision to save and not spend on shit to try and better mine and my family’s life, should be written off and cease to exist instead of going to my children, to help ease the burden of the fact it’ll be near impossible for them to get on the property ladder and cost of living is increasing faster than salaries?

Wouldn't the more appropriate analogy be it is unfair my parents don't have sweets to give me but Sophie's parents have sweets to give her (for whatever reason).

And instead of sweets it's more like medicine...

AestheticallyChallenged · 06/02/2025 17:10

How is inheritance unfair to the younger generation when it's the major way that the wealth that their older relations have built up is passed down to them?

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/02/2025 17:09

@ThisCandidCritic Here, you can have some of mine!!!!! aye, right!! are you for real or just a green eyed monster???

DemeraraAbyss · 06/02/2025 17:05

It is unfair that I have spent my money on sweets and eaten them so can’t by anymore but Sophie saved her money so can buy sweets now and give them to her friends! She should share her money with everyone so I can get more sweets!

DeepFatFried · 06/02/2025 17:05

You'll have to abolish all personal property and personal wealth when you become Dictator Despot in Chief, OP.

To stop anyone with enough money buying their families a house, a car, paying for their adult kids expenses of any kind.

You will have to find a way to stop other inequalities and unfairnesses:

Those who started with nothing (including much education) and got wildly rich anyway.

Those who get wildly rich from swooshing their hair or muscles around on TikTok while those who work in low-paid but life-saving roles struggle to pay the heating bills

Some children being brought up in home with 2 earners, some with none.

Some children having their confidence knocked with lifelong impact by abusive parents

Not sure how you will deal with disability and chronic illness?

But maybe a start could be to establish a society where we all pull together to create a free education system so that every child gets an education to use to their benefit for future economic stability

A health system to ensure that all citizens can access free healthcare for minor and major illnesses

A social welfare support system to catch abused children, give more support (financial and practical) to those with disabilities and impairments, support for those unable to work or to support their children on a low income....

Oh, what might we call this imaginary system?

Meanwhile, IHT at 40% supports some of the above systems...

Colourfulfairylights · 06/02/2025 17:02

wipeywipe · 06/02/2025 16:51

@Colourfulfairylights exactly! My parent's house is well over a million but I would prefer a functioning economy.

Indeed. I do get on the face of it it sounds great to inherit especially when people who have come from poorer back grounds and their parents have earned wealth. However most of inherited wealth in this country comes from house prices, pp on this thread have commented that inheritance will go to their children, million in some cases- but what happens to those who don't? They leave the country? Decide not to train?

The best gift any of us can give to our children is not having to pay ££££ for standard houses. I dont live in the SW and yet house prices near me are crazy, 500k for a mid terrace. I'm lucky enough to be the right side of 40 and so bought at a good time, but how on earth do young graduates afford that if they don't inherit. So then what, the city has no trainee doctors, no teachers, no nurses?

Crazy how short sighted some ppl are.

I know ppl have always inherited but the difference now Is inheritance of significant sums, is more common, mainly due to stupid house, so it's not just a select few inheriting which means it's more pronounced for those left behind

I say this with no jealousy. I have inherited and only have 1 child so we are able to help them- I am part of the problem also but I do at least see the issues it causes.

ServantsGonnaServe · 06/02/2025 17:01

JoyousGreyOrca · 06/02/2025 16:30

It is not jealousy. I actually think all income should be taxed at the same rate as salaries. That includes IHT. But with a generous exemption for married couples.

There shouldn't be an IHT. All earned should be taxed correctly at the point of earning it. Why should I be taxed on my salary, choose to save it instead of spaffing it, and then pay tax again on that same money. Its bollocks.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/02/2025 17:00

It is unfair, but that's life.

All my half siblings will get hundreds of thousands at the least, in two cases possibly into six figures. Due to both sets of biological parents being not interested and my adoptive father taking up with a woman who shoved all his previous family out of the picture, I will get nothing.

That's life.

Ive been lucky in other ways though. And while it does sting, I choose not to indulge in bitterness for more than a few moments occasionally.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 06/02/2025 16:59

I'd rather have my parents than all their money.

But they have saved (they lived off my Dad's army pension and saved his salary for years) and invested so that they can leave us something when they die. It is what my Dad's parents did for them so they are doing it for us. If I had children I'd do the same but I don't.

JRSKSSBH · 06/02/2025 16:59

wipeywipe · 06/02/2025 16:49

It's jealousy pure and simple, which is understandable, but not going to do you any good.

It's insane to label all discussion as jealously. We are in serious financial strife in this country with no improvements on the horizon.

Because the state is inefficient and wasteful. The economic problems are very much self-inflicted and will not improve unless and until productivity improves. The state taking more and more money helps no one.

SleepToad · 06/02/2025 16:58

So my old man couldn't read or write. Him and mum lived in a caravan for a while. A bedsit when I was born. He left me just enough to pay my mortgage off at 24 ... Mum died when I was 17...and you begrudge him working like a cunt, which considerably shorted his life, to buy a house in a shitty part of Bristol.
Well ...jealousy is a thief...and you clearly have been robbed of any joy in your life

wipeywipe · 06/02/2025 16:56

never claimed benefits etc.

state pension is a benefit....

Naunet · 06/02/2025 16:54

Who told you life was fair?!

Bluejacket · 06/02/2025 16:54

1apenny2apenny · 06/02/2025 14:30

So you think it's unfair that my children will inherit from their parents despite the fact that we have both worked hard, when we were younger don't 2 jobs, and gone without and cut our cloth? No doubt you will say we are 'lucky'!

Life is hard and soooooo unfair. We've paid our taxes, never claimed benefits etc. Focus on how the government waste money and subsidise big business.

Well said. I feel personally insulted by this post. We inherited zilch!!! A couple of council estate kids from big families who worked bloody hard for 50 years, limited our own family to two and now enjoying the fruits of our labour, travelling where we want when we want. We’re already offloading surplus assets to our middle aged ‘kids’ which gives us enormous pleasure.

Cerial · 06/02/2025 16:53

BatchCookBabe · 06/02/2025 16:04

What a tedious and smug post! You are basically saying that if you're not rolling in money, that you must have been a lazy shirker, who has simply not worked HARD enough.

Many people work hard, and don't get the same breaks as others do. Congratulations to your wealthy parents, for doing so well, and also congratulations to YOU - because you're going to have a big fat inheritance from them. At least you can sail though life, never having to lift a finger eh? 😎 Because you can live a life of luxury on the inheritance you receive from mummy and daddy! 😃

Woo hoo!

🤮
