Every day waking up to yet another insane declaration from Trump. America is losing the respect of the world

It's like a parallel universe - how did America come to this? So now he plans to ethnically cleanse Gaza we are told - to create the 'Riviera of the Middle East.' A golf course and hotels probably. The £2 million people can just go wherever. Wtf! AIBU to think America is imploding in on itself?

I notice the 'Trump will be good for America' comments have dried up.

Yep. He is a disaster, and this American expat finds it so very painful to see.

Musk can't be president. You have to be born in America to be president. So you can stop worrying about that anyway 🙂

Maybe so, but he can still be Rod Hull with Trump as Emu.

Chickensilkie · 07/02/2025 22:02

@StandFirm agree but what is the soft power everyone hates the USA esp Muslim countries

Apologies if mentioned but apprently he wants to put pressure on Arab counties to sort out gaza

What I really fear is that Musk is being set up to be the next President. Either by himself or by Trump, by him having an inside track to government. And if he manages not to completely crash America I can see the Republicans might well go for it. Trump has been a winner for them, Musk would be Trump mk2.

Musk is a very very dangerous loose canon. He could (you wouldn't think it was possible) be worse than the Orange One.

It's amongst the long list of things we once considered crazy/madness, that are now becoming a scary reality.

Apart from the dubious safety record of Musk products he's the sort of person whobwould calculate whether it was worth 2 million extra dollars to save 100 lives.

A lot of people are going to die because of Trump, whether through air safety, pretending infectious diseases don't exist, destruction of law enforcement....

But this is trump’s MO. He’s been very open about how he negotiates. He is a hard negotiator.

he goes in with an extreme demand. He knows he won’t get it. Greenland/Canada/Gaza- whatever it is. They sound stupid and crazy but he does it to destabilise those he is negotiating with. The craziness puts people on edge - they don’t know what he will do.

clearly then the negotiations start happening and Trump concedes ground and somewhere he gets hopefully what he wants. For instance, I don’t think for a minute Trump expected to buy Greenland. But he wants the key artic influence. He’ll end up with extra influence in the area.

the key to Trump is not his first grandstanding demand. Look at what he really wants…

Hopefully he won't end up with more influence. What it will do it strengthen Europe and make sure they spend more on defence. Trump doesn't have a plan, as was patently demonstrated when his own inner circle said they didn't know that he was planning on taking over Gaza. He's an idiot who shoots from the hip.

I guess you're the kind of poster who believes that crap about the "weave"....

Putin must be really enjoying watching all this chaos.

Of course he is. He paid RW influencers to get it.

So what’s the alternative- that they all live on a building site? Are you ok with children living amongst rubble with no sewerage system/running water/shops? What are you wanting to happen to all those people? Maybe moving people out will also break up Hamas who caused all this in the first place - because until Hamas are got rid of the people of Gaza are always going to be under threat..

I am not ok with ethnic cleansing.

I cannot believe that’s a thing I have to state in 2025.

DdraigGoch · 07/02/2025 15:48

"Losing"? It's past that. Its credibility was long-since lost.

Cerial · 07/02/2025 15:47

There is no point trying compare health systems unless you have fully participated in both.
There’s a lot to hate in both systems.

Do you think those who support Trump, Musk (or the Reform Party in the UK) know that they’re playing into Putin’s hands? Perhaps some of them are also fans of Putin, who knows?

You can imagine Putin and his fans thinking if Trump can claim Gaza in the middle east and Greenland on the other side, then Putin wanting Ukraine right next door, doesn't sound as bad.

We can only hope.

I expect all these suggesting we get rid of the NHS have either got tons of cash, or a vested interest in privatising the NHS so they can get their grubby hands on it, or are paid to promote this rubbish on social media by those who do have a vested interest.

No sane person would want a privatised NHS. Only billionaires and private healthcare investors - people without the interest of ordinary people at heart. It is shameful.

BurntBroccoli · 07/02/2025 14:10

I agree @pananamana the NHS is amazing. It's so sad it has been run down over the last 20 years in order for it to be sold off to private companies.

What was the NHS like during the 90s @Notaflippinclue ? I remember that waiting lists were much smaller, you could get same day or next day appointments. A four hour wait at A & E was deemed unthinkable. Now it's 12 in some areas.

Worked for the NHS for 40 years thanks just had to pay £15,000 for a new hip! Yes the NHS is bloody rubbish

The NHS is amazing. the US healthcare system is the most corrupt and expensive in the world. SAVE OUR NHS. Keep those nasty right wing politicians (Farage et al) and dodgy billionaires away from it.

You'd pay alot more under trump.

Yeah, that's like the Poundland version of a hip replacement in the US. You'd be way over that amount before you stepped through the door of an orthopaedic ward there.

For those of you who have responded to my post:
@TankFlyBossW4lk @Locutus2000 and others, apologies if I've not namechecked you:

I'm not 'trying to be clever', I'm just passing on a genuine US point of view which is not as often seen on MN.

I comprehend that that is utterly GUTTING for the educated masses on MN but ...
most Americans REALLY do not think about the rest of the planet. They REALLY don't think beyond the end of their driveway. They REALLY vote with their next week's pay check and utility bill in mind.

As such, US citizens are not at all considering how US policy will affect the rest of the planet. They do not see themselves as 'unleashing hell' on the rest of the planet. Surprising to MN, most US citizens are much too modest for that. They do not see themeslves as voting for what is, effectively, a planet-wide policy. They have no idea what their votes will wreak on the rest of the planet. They area really just thinking about their retirement plans and their grandchildren and their heating bill. If you said to them that their votes affect people across the planet in countries they've never heard of they'd be genuinely gobsmacked.

US citizens who care about the planet and its countries know that US policies have a huge impact but they are in the minority and although they vote as UK MNs might want, they cannot make much progress with their votes.I, personally, do comprehend that US policy affects the rest of the planet. Although just one vote, I made the effort to secure an overseas ballot and voted as loudly as one vote could for Kamala.

Consider though that at the lunch table, no one rounds on the UK citizen and demands to know how they voted or why. No one asks, Sophie in packing why she voted for Brexit because the WHOLE WORLD IS SUFFERING.
Likewise, who is demanding to know which Israeli or Palestinian ex-pats voted for Netanyahu or the Hamas candidate? That would be a bit rude, woudn't it ...

As a US citizen abroad, I often find it impossible to balance the expectations: either the US is a 'bully' imposing their policy or they are too slow to wade in and resolve a (minor) conflict with a unilateral (pro-American stance, go figure) solution. No matter the president, who is usually a pawn of his/her party, US policy is considered to be wrong and I have been given long-winded chaper and verse about policies I didn't vote for and don't support and can't change but it was still my fault...)

I agree with everything you say. It's great to have that perspective; my own observation as a frequent visitor has been that many Americans don't like, don't want, or don't understand the nature of the country's leadership in the world. In many ways it's such an insular country; a huge chunk of land framed by two oceans, and only two neighbours... So, it's easy to feel disconnected from the rest of the world ultimately. However, the impact of those policies is real and the imminent end of the American soft power will have consequences for the average citizen. It'll be too late when reality hits; not sure what the reaction will be.
