It's like a parallel universe - how did America come to this? So now he plans to ethnically cleanse Gaza we are told - to create the 'Riviera of the Middle East.' A golf course and hotels probably. The £2 million people can just go wherever. Wtf! AIBU to think America is imploding in on itself?

2 friends left Communist states, years ago, glad to live in USA for last 30 years. They know what's coming and have both, with immense regret, returned to Europe.

@Lovemagenta strange that all those people are willing to risk everything to get into it then. Guess they don't know when they're well off in their home countries.

The people I know there are doing their best to leave right now.

@Loveumagenta that may all be true but its also true in many countries in the world. Plus the US is a democracy and women get to vote there. The rule of law exists. It may not be perfect but one of the least free in the world? No.

Sorry, pet but ONE of the least free countries in the world still stands. I don’t care if women can drive and tote an AR-15 if they can’t get contraception or access to healthcare or decide what goes on in their own bodies - that IS NOT what freedom looks like.
And for that man-baby Vance to be lecturing the rest on us on freedom - well that’s a fecking joke.

Turkeyneck101 · 15/02/2025 12:30

People forget America is a very young country still and it's v
Very backward in many ways.

For a nation that is repetitive in its rhetoric about the 'Constitution' and 'Freedom' it seems to be riding roughshod over the Constitution and sleepwalking into losing alot of their freedoms. They also have a short memory... so many countries came to their assistance post 9/11 but hey ho its 'FU we dont care' now.

As for trump 'negotiating' a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, he has already conceded to all of putins demands so he may as well stay at home and practice his ridiculous sharpie signature. Someone needs to explain to him the concept of negotiation. Basically trump is an idiot.

Chickensilkie · 15/02/2025 11:37

Why would Elon do stuff for money and corruption I don't feel getting more money is his driver, power probably but not more money

Trump, not sure I don't believe he actually has much!
People critique wealthy people in politics but I'm not sure we are safer from those who didn't grow up in a monied background.
Look at our collection now taking freebies from lord Ali and clothes, boxes etc.
And the rest

Unfortunately a different type of repression had taken place before with people frightened of calling out gender policies so now there is a huge swing back the other way.

It will take decades to get some proper balance there.

Very backward in many ways.

Porcuporpoise · 15/02/2025 11:33

@pananamana yes I've seen it. Do I like it? No. But it doesn't change the fact that the US is not one of the least free countries in the world. Not yet, at least.

Have you not seen what has been going on the last week? it is descending rapidly into fascism. Thanks to Elon and Trump. Shutting down free speech. Closing govt departments. You have to have your eyes closed to not see it or be deliberately obtuse. It is turning into a country like Russia. Facade of "democracy" but underneath complete corruption.

The US is "one of the least free countries in the world?" How so? Much as I dislike the whole Trump rodeo that sounds like crap.

Does it? Women don’t have the right to basic reproductive rights in many states - men are deciding that. In fact women’s rights are threatened in every arena
You can’t go anywhere or do anything without ID. It amazed me the first time I went - the constant demand for ID
healthcare - under the control of your employer at lot of the time, basic healthcare depends on the $$ you have so you have no freedom there,
lack of social mobility - the myth of work hard become rich is gone for anyone not already wealthy.
work -you’re free to work like a dog someone else can get rich.
The US lock up more of its citizens than any other country. Sometimes for minor things, and again the poor non-whites bear the brunt.
There is no separation of state and church - despite there supposing to be - ‘god’ is everywhere in politics, dictating the rights of everyone…

’freedom’ is a myth. Vance basically had a pop at Europeans because we have more freedom - like the right to reproductive care.
Jnder his eyeFreedom in the US is for rich white men.

Loveumagenta · 15/02/2025 09:50

It’s how most totalitarian states start out … the irony of all the USA ‘freedom’ is that they are actually one of the least free countries in the world. Unless you want to buy military grade weapons of course. Then you can fill your boots .

Their imagined superiority is mind boggling. Listening to Vance lecture the UK on free speech makes me want to heave. Same spineless cretin can't even defend his own indian wife and children from a racially abusive teen.

Meanwhile The White House has kicked out a reporter for referring to Gulf of Mexico . It’s only Trump using Gulf of America, the rest of the world still knows it as Gulf of Mexico.
So much for free speech in America!

JD Vance bringing US culture war tactics over here and lecturing European states with half truths.
Really have had enough of them already.

Oliver Stone's Untold History of the US?

Fifiworks · 13/02/2025 23:02

I’m avoiding the news now. It sends me into despair to be honest. I the combination of the far right rising in Europe, Trump, Elon, Putin…

I don’t think it’s looking good for any of us.

well your post is not lasting well is it. How gullible can you be?

What has he done which is positive - the tariffs he puts on products from other countries are then paid for by the American consumers. He’s not going to turn Canada into a US state or take Greenland. His comments regarding Gaza are appalling - it’s ethnic cleansing.

BusyExpert · 13/02/2025 22:34

Parker231 · 05/02/2025 21:20

Trump is nonsense - creates turmoil in the stock markets, makes false claims about tariffs and taking other countries. He won’t follow through on his election promises and everything which goes wrong is someone else’s fault!

well your post is not lasting well is it. How gullible can you be?

When I say contempt, I'm thinking of things like the endless videos on the internet that basically consist of "look at these stupid Americans saying stupid things, aren't Americans just unbelievably stupid?'

As though Europe is solely populated by erudite polymaths.

At least 100 million Americans are eligible to be President. That’s a massive pool of talent. If, after a very lengthy selection process, Americans choose the likes of Trump and George W. Bush to lead and represent their country, they’re going to be fighting the assumption that Americans are not very bright. Is it an accurate assumption? Of course not, but it’s the first impression that many foreigners will have of them.

EasternStandard · 10/02/2025 07:54

I think us Europeans have a lot to grateful to the US for (e.g being a major funder and supplier of forces to defend countries on the Russian borders) but all they get in criticism and contempt. I can see why a lot of Americans might just end up thinking "well, fuck you then..."

Agree with that. That goes with the recent rise in anti American sentiment. US voters thinking good luck without our funding then.

Fifiworks · 08/02/2025 23:03

I completely agree. Large numbers of people in the US clearly feel shafted. Trump pointed the finger at, well mostly immigrants really, and promised to make their lives better.

I don’t think you can just dismiss them as stupid.

By soft power I meant not just cultural influence, which is waning anyway, but really essentially funding for education, health etc mostly through USAid (which provided a sizeable % of the budget for some countries, including Jordan).
As for Muslim countries hating the US, well it's not hard to see why they'd have such a complicated relationship with them. Personally, I think Iraq was the beginning of the end (but to be honest, US foreign policy has always been problematic, I am not an unconditional fan by any means)

I dunno, it's not just those countries.
