I am a new mum so looking for your opinion on what happened to me the other day. I am a single mum of a 4 month old baby who doesn't sleep much. Don't get much help, which is fine and when my baby sleeps I can get some mental brake. Was waiting at the till in Home Bargins and there were 2 ladies extremely loud, laughing and jumping flirting with the cashier, who was giving them bags for free... My wee one just managed to fall asleep so I thought it will be ok to ask for them to keep it the noise down. What a backlash I have received... both ladies shouting at me that I am soooo rude, joined by the cashier. I explained that I only asked politely and there is no need to get upset but was told not to take my child onto the shop... I get that, I wouldn't if I had another option. I left and was crying all the way back home. I think due to being exhausted and also the fact that I asked 2 mature ladies hoping they would understand... Maybe I was in wrong? This really bugs me... What would u do?

You don't have to be in Home Bargains to experience the low lifes. There's always plenty of em on here <boom boom>

I am finding it instructive that so many folks think that just because I prefer to be in a nice environment, don’t want to be surrounded by noisy individuals, that I somehow must be strange. I don’t expect staff in A&E Depts to have to put up with bad behaviour as well, am saddened that so many shops have signs asking customers not to be abusive, and cannot believe just how many children are excluded from schools, but this seems to be the norm for many who perhaps never give this sort of thing a passing thought? That’s fine, I can happily zone out of being somewhere I might feel disappointed by, there’s lots of choices. I would add that there’s nothing wrong with places like HB and their staff, and yes, the uncouth, uncaring types, more interested in their own gratification one way or another do seem to be in the majority and in all sorts of places but it’s not a crime not to want to join in. You pick your times to shop, you pick your shops, (and other public environments)and you hope not to be part of some bun fight where the loudest, most awful are arguing the toss with security guards or police. There’s little respect for anything or others sometimes, but it doesn’t mean you have to join in. Each to there own, my world is a nice one.

Meh

Word salad

I could understand the asking to keep it down if the ladies were being lively on a table next to you in a restaurant or maybe on a long coach trip with the baby where you are in close proximity for a long time.
Not having a bit of a joke at the checkout when the cashier is being friendly to them but needs to get her next customer served so won't be hanging about.
This interaction is a couple of minutes at most.

Aren't women allowed to be loud/laugh in public? What's selfish about speaking loudly and laughing in a public place where silence isn't mandatory?

What does this mean - And they weren't 'ladies'.

Are ladies defined by their airs and graces, ability to STFU in shops, not answer back when asked to keep the noise down in a shop?

If the OP is lacking in sleep and her baby is tired, that's her problem, not customers in a shop who can laugh/speak/shout as they wish.

Love this response

Sorry YWBU. Sounds like they were just having a bit of fun. If it’s that important to you why didn’t you just do another round of the shop away from them until they’d paid?

If this is your idea of fun I dread to think what your nights out consist of 😂

Flirting and shouting in home bargains is not my idea of having fun !

I think people should be more considerate OP and I hate how loud and attention seeking people are these days.

I feel for you OP. Sadly the demographic found in Home Bargains is possibly the issue here. I’m astonished daily at how unthinking, downright awful some folks can be around poor behaviour and a lack of understanding around others.

Clearly you’re not used to such horrible things in Waitrose or Booths where you shop and everyone looks after children for people 😂

Pippyls67 · 06/02/2025 22:10

If you were polite they were unreasonable not you. Being a new mum is so hard. You can get some right rough old, hard bitten ratbags in home bargains. Ignore and don’t waste another thought on them.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

What's so hilarious about that poster's suggestion? Confused

Flossy1985 · 06/02/2025 21:42

Sorry you had to go through this op I too am a first time mum of a 4month old so I know how difficult it can be to get a little one to sleep. However you can’t really ask others to be quiet when out in public, you can report the staff member for shouting back at you though! I hope you do so if you haven’t yet.

Justalittlehandhold · 06/02/2025 20:38

ZippyDoodle · 06/02/2025 19:19

I certainly wouldn't ask someone to keep the noise down for fear of getting a mouthful. Too many people care about themselves these days.

I shop at quiet times and do the food shop in Waitrose where it's quite rare to see screaming children running up and down the aisles.

Have a rethink on where and when you do your shopping.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Tortielady · 06/02/2025 20:11

Everything feels worse when you're sleep deprived so I completely get it. But you can't expect people to be quiet in public and shops across the board are quite noisy anyway. Take out human chatter, you've still got bleeps from the tills and card readers, trolley wheels, those metal cage things the staff use for filling shelves, the bump-bump-bump of bulky items like soap powder being dragged across the tills etc. Shops aren't a haven of peace. Having said that, my local Waterstones isn't bad. Even when there are a few people in the queue it's fairly quiet and there's a chair in the corner. If it's not already occupied, I use it to get my head together while I contemplate a treat for me or DH. They have a beautiful children's section too.

LouDeLou · 06/02/2025 19:53

You can't ask people to be quiet. Unless you are in a library. What was you thinking?

i wonder what’s going on in your Waitrose? Do they drug their children I wonder?
I shop in Waitrose a lot as it’s the nearest shop and it’s full of screeching, running children and loud people on mobiles.

Wick55 · 06/02/2025 19:41

As someone who now has a toddler I remember the irrational anger at people being noisy when my baby was asleep as he was such a light sleeper. As long as you asked politely any empathetic person should have quietened down for you and been kind.

notacooldad · 06/02/2025 19:23

The women would only have been at the till for a matter of minutes and having a bit of banter with the cashier which is perfectly normal where I live.

I think all this is a mountain out of a mole hill and the situation probably felt worse than it was because the op is so tired.

They do the yummiest Alioli in their chilled cabinet and yep we buy the fat balls and bird seed for our flock of wild birds.

Those eejits probably shoot the wild birds🤣

Well they only shit all over the manicured lawn anyway! So why wouldn’t they!

I sort of wish you hadn’t told me about the alioli, I’m duty bound to try an entire tub now!

Wordsmithery · 06/02/2025 18:56

It's unfortunate that they didn't realise how tired you are - if they'd been younger, and mums, you wouldn't have got the backlash I don't think. But they're at a different life stage and won't have put themselves in your shoes.
Try not to take it too personally. Although I would probably complain to the store about their cashier. Under no circumstances should they have joined in.
It'll get easier, honestly.

Their bird food of all descriptions are always on our bird feeder station, I’ll let the “snobs” go pay triple the price in their garden centres!

Fools!

You did nothing wrong, some people are just horrible.

Yes she did, it's very rude asking people to be quiet in a public place and believe me I have been there with the sleep deprived evening with one of my children waking every single hour, but I would never ever ever have dreamed of asking someone to be quiet.

Pres11 · 06/02/2025 18:39

You are rude to ask others to be quiet. You are in a public place and people can be as loud as they want to. I find loud people so irritating but I wouldn’t dream of telling them to be quiet. Even if I had my sleeping baby with me.

‘I'm laughing at the sneery posts about the Home Bargain's demographic. Just before Christmas I bumped into our director ( local authority) there with his wife. They were buying stocking fillers for the grandchildren. As the wife said, 'you've got to love a bargain!'

I’d never been in Home Bargains, until a friend who was visiting from Italy sang the praises of its luggage , he got a really cheap extra suitcase there. So we went to have a look, and DH now buys their bird peanuts every fortnight.

The friend is a Marquis.

@justalittlehandhold If you actually believed some of the shite that some posters sit and type🤣

Thy live in squillion squid houses, earn a squillion squid a year, have strapping six foot rugby playing sons and make a cooked chicken last a week. In reality they are bored as fuck and like to come in here and pretend to look down on others.

You get them popping up on threads like these, usually followed by a head tilt and tinkly laugh😁

Edited

And their children most certainly do not have dummies on clips!!

That’s a sure sign of a lower class, don’t you know!
