To let DD get her eyebrow pierced for her 15th birthday?

DD is insistent that this is the only present she wants. My local piercer won't do it until she's 16 but she's found another in town that will do it as long as we both take ID. She says she knows the risks that it could grow out or get ripped out but I don't really think that she believes anything bad could happen. What are peoples experiences? I don't really like piercings (I don't even have my ears pierced) but I am bringing her up that it is her body, her choice, so torn on what to do? In case it makes any difference she is a great kid who is trustworthy and doing well at school. None of her friends have any piercings other than ears.

Interestingly most people I talk to think eyebrow piercing is 'chavvy' or rough looking.
I'm extremely middle class, quite wealthy and dress pretty nicely but I'd love an eyebrow piercing.

I haven't done it as I don't want a scar if I choose to remove it and I like to groom my brows and I think it would cause more trouble than it's worth but I actually like them. Only with something very pretty though. No blackened titanium stud thing

Quite honestly, I think it comes from people who have zero idea about other subcultures tbh. Piercings have always been an "alternative" thing to me. I've met the odd "chav" with a piercing, same as I've met ones with tattoos...poorly done! It's fairly recent that chavvy types have started getting them. Years ago they'd hurl abuse (and worse) at goths for having them.

When done properly with nice jewelry (or a good tattoo artist), there's nothing chavvy about them. I know lots of ex-goths/alternative sorts and none of their jewelry or bodyart looks tacky. All also wealthy and "middle class" sorts!

Unfortunately do agree with the eyebrow scarring though. I'd recommend a nose piercing, as I said above. Very little scarring indeed, and even less so for a septum - the horseshoe style ones can even be flipped up and made invisible.

Moonnstars · 05/02/2025 15:05

I was saying no on account of school, but if you know school will be ok with it and the piercing place is hygienic and reputable then I would allow it. Better to get it done with you somewhere decent than her going off in secret and getting it done with someone dodgy

So they allow piercings and bright hair dye?

The Schools where I live are strict on these issues and don’t allow it.

I would agree with a previous poster that once she’s 18 she can please herself.

Agree - am surprised. DT’s school didn’t allow any hair dye, nail polish, make up and only ear piercings if it was a stud - removed for games lessons and practice

Comtesse · 05/02/2025 14:44

My daughter will be 15 at her next birthday and I would say no way if she asked for the same piercing. Absolutely no way. She’s too young for starters. And I’m damned if I would spend my money on something like that.

Westiegirl3 · 05/02/2025 14:33

There's no way I'd allow her to have her eyebrow pierced at 15, or happy about it at18 for that matter I'd do my very best to talk her out of it..

I have piercings but honestly think that one looks so chavvy and looks awful

TheCosyOliveKoala · 05/02/2025 14:13

It would be an absolutely not from me. But you might have the problem of a strong willed teenager getting it done some way or another. It’s also really not a trendy thing these days, and at 15 she’s still presumably at school? Maybe negotiate and suggest she can get it done when she’s 18 and technically an adult. No corporate jobs for her though.

GiddyRobin · 05/02/2025 14:13

I personally wouldn't let her go for the eyebrow one yet. They do scar. I love piercings; have lots in my ears, nose is pierced, tongue at one point, and bellybutton. Lip and brow were the two I avoided because I saw friends get really obvious scarring.

Maybe something in her ear? A nose piercing heals really well, and I know people will hate the idea on MN, but a septum piercing will show even less. I don't have that one done but I know many who have - zero visible scarring.

Also, it's not "chavvy" to have piercings. 🤣 Pretty sure the goths who got harrassed by those sorts growing up wouldn't agree with that! And piercings and tattoos have never hindered my career. 🤨 Nor anyone I know - from academics, senior managers in publishing, to doctors.

WhereAreWeNow · 05/02/2025 14:05

Personally I would be unhappy if it was my DD but I appreciate you want to let her make her own decisions.
I would however check the school's policy and the policy of any 6th form college she's thinking of applying to. Some have stricter uniform and dress codes than others.

Hankunamatata · 05/02/2025 14:01

Sil had one for years when we were all young. Now she has two holes that won't heal over. She hates them but accepted she made her choice

I have an almost 14 year old DD and I would say no to this.
Mainly because teens change their minds a lot and an eyebrow piercing is very likely to leave a permanent scar.

My DD has 2 lobe piercings and is desperate to get her bellybutton and helix done but we have said no more piercings until 16.

I'd also be wary of any piercing studio that's willing to pierce a 15 year old's eyebrow- I think a reputable place wouldn't

Truth25 · 05/02/2025 13:30

It's tacky and I don't know when last I saw anyone have this. Honestly op, I would say no and tell her it's just looks cheap and tacky .

Yeah but opinions and tastes are...y'know, subjective. I've got piercings and tattoos and my teenage daughter has three piercings in each ear and her nose. And we both love how we look.

LoafofSellotape · 05/02/2025 13:50

Sparrow7 · 05/02/2025 10:55

Does anyone has experience of it going wrong? (Maybe I can put her off with some horror stories 😂)

I thought one of the risks was that it can make your eyebrows drop slightly which can look odd?

GreenSeaGlass · 05/02/2025 13:48

I’ve had loads of piercings including my eyebrow as a teen. It grew out and now 30 years later I still have an ugly scar and the hair on my eyebrows doesn’t grow on that area.

Tagyoureit · 05/02/2025 13:48

Absolutely not, and I wouldn't trust any place that allows it!!

CienAnosDeSoledad · 05/02/2025 13:42

SaltyPig · 05/02/2025 13:30

She wouldn't be doing it with my permission at 15 or 16.
DD wanted her septum pierced. She is slightly different in that her cardiologist said no tattoos or piercings ever.
DD said it was 18 to get that done. Even so I still said no, but that at 18 it would be her decision. She first asked at 15. I'm her DM. She doesn't have to like my decisions but it was for her own good. By 18 she wasn't bothered.

She doesn't need your permission starting from 16.

Anyway, OP, it's a yes from me. Don't see a big deal, had all sorts of piercings myself, took some out, still wear the others. No one died.

Plus it definitely helps filtering out the pearl clutching, frumpy, stuck in the 50s, self-righteous 'cheap and tacky' brigade and that's a massive plus in my book. Why would anyone want to be associated with them.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 05/02/2025 13:42

No. Part of parenting is to say no, not legal abd she's not old enough to make this decision.

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 05/02/2025 13:10

She can get it done anyway at 16 without your consent

I didn't know this. I won't tell her haha!!

Caerulea · 05/02/2025 13:36

Hard no from me. I say this as someone with a significant amount of skin covered in a couple of very large tattoos. Also I love the look of face piercings but don't have any.

DS was desperate for his ears to be pierced from about 11 & I said he could do it at 15 with no negotiations. It's a permanent change to the body, no matter where it is, but at least ears heal easily. Anything other than that would be 18. He wants other ear piercings but hasn't nagged cos he knows he needs to wait, not least because of school disallowing them so it would interrupt healing.

Were it up to me I'd have the age limit set to 18 for all of it 🤷🏼‍♀️

hummingbird12 · 05/02/2025 13:32

Nothing on her face no. I think she will regret it and it looks a bit awful anyway.

Belly button maybe at 15 but definitely not her face

I would and I have. My daughter had her septum done at 13, eyebrow done at 14 and snakebites done at 15. She's very responsible about keeping them clean etc. She attends an independent specialist school (she's autistic) and they don't mind. It is an expression of themselves and it's her face so I'm good with it. Looks pretty good and she's happy :)

My dd wants a belly button piercing for her 16th birthday.

It's a flat no from me. No further discussion required.
