DD demanding chocolate when she's on her period

Homeymum2 · 04/02/2025 16:35

My 14 yo DD insists that all her friends parents buy them chocolates and pamper them when they are cycling -

I'm being told I'm a terrible mum and badgered for chocolates

Am I an outlier to not cater to this?

Why isn't she capable of buying chocolate herself?

I don't understand all the comments about craving chocolate when on a period, but then I crave it everyday.

Ignoring the (very predictable) lack of imagination/empathy posts, what is striking in this thread is the gulf between the "I have always had to get on with it, that's life" and the frankly touching caring shown by families and partners to women and girls. I grew up in the former mold and happily have moved closer to the latter.

But one thing I will say is that it's not just that it feels nicer to rest and eat sugar or salt when your body asks for it, you are actually not 'pushing through ' as well as you think you are! You are irritable, fatigued, uncomfortable and eventually this does impact the people around you! You are not doing a favour for people who rely on you at work or home if you do not make any adjustments to care for yourself, however trivial you think they are.

I am late in life to learning this so say it with humility.

Thanks to the parents described in this thread who are teaching their children through their actions.

Demanding and pampering aren't words I'd be interested in but responding to and supporting reasonable needs/desires are.
I used to really crave chocolate when I was on my period in my teens. But funnily enough that totally stopped when I ate a better diet (I want getting enough fruit and veg), so I actually think it was actually my body wanting better nutrition, which of course is more needed at that time.

I'd ask her who she thinks buys you chocolate and pampers you when you are on your period?

Edited

Her DP most likely

Laura36TTC · 04/02/2025 17:15

Jeezo…. As someone else said. It’s chocolate not crack cocaine!

Buy the girl some chocolate!

User37482 · 04/02/2025 17:15

My periods were horrifically painful at that age and I flooded. Would have been nice to get some painkillers, chocolate and a hot water bottle. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t for a child who’s not feeling great.

minwage2025 · 04/02/2025 17:15

@ERthree it depends on your periods. Yeah I do have to stay in bed for a couple of days sometimes around then

DazedAndConfused321 · 04/02/2025 17:15

'Cycling' Are you 100 years old? I can't help but laugh, you seriously think a 14 year old in pain, moody and bleeding doesn't deserve a bit of sympathy, a face mask and some chocolate? Being a teenager is fucking awful, being a teenager on your period is unbearable. Lighten up, develop some empathy and soften your heart!

MrsSunshine2b · 04/02/2025 17:15

ERthree · 04/02/2025 16:48

Tell her only Princesses get pampered and as she is not a Princess she will just have to get on with it.

Calm down Miss Minchin.

Both my girls will always be my princesses, especially when they are in pain and bleeding.

I think that this treats periods as an illness. OK I never had pms or period pain so perhaps I'm biased. It could also lead to a disorderd relationship with chocolate. Feeling ill chocolate, in pain choco, having a bad day, choc.

We don't have chocolate in the house as a matter of course.

Januarybirthdaysarehardtomakefun · 04/02/2025 17:13

Chocolate is a God send when I’m hormonal, I gave DD chocolate for her first period.

Yes totally spoil my daughter during her period. There will comeca time whdn I won't be here to do it and I want tobas long as I can.
Electric blanket.
Endless tea.
Dinner on a tray.
Cinnamon buns.
Favourite crisps.
Marshmallows.

Glad to be able to do it for her.

Omg cinnamon buns! You just reminded me of being a teen! Dad would go and buy some of these, and a packet of those instant coffee cappuccinos when I was on. I had totally forgotten until now! Memory unlocked. Thank you!

BlueSilverCats · 04/02/2025 17:12

@ERthree some women have awful, long, extremely painful periods , with a ridiculous amount of blood loss. Periods might be part of life, but they're not all the same. If you're lucky enough to not know any different, you're just lucky. Not stronger or some type of superior woman.

LooksThroughaGlass · 04/02/2025 17:11

I'd have hated my mum fussing over me.

Sawcootstoday · 04/02/2025 17:10

Of course it's normal to need comfort and lots of chocolate when you have your period!

It's also common to feel in need of extra love and support when feeling emotional.

SlowSeasons · 04/02/2025 17:10

A bar of chocolate OK, pampering... Not on your nelly 😂

At 14 doesn't she have allowance/ pocket money to buy things she needs / wants?

My 14 year old gets £10 a week that evaporates I'm sure! She has the freedom to buy chocolate if she wants chocolate? I don't get why you're being so controlling.

LooksThroughaGlass · 04/02/2025 17:10

I'm surprised that pampering DDs is a 'thing' at that time of the month.
It comes over as some ritual that some mums invented.

Never happened in my day and didn't when my DD started hers.

As a family we rarely ever had sweets or chocs in the house anyway.

Mine would offer me a hot water bottle!

Newfoundzestforlife · 04/02/2025 17:09

Sugar cravings are well known at the time of the month...just get your daughter some chocolate.

Trimalata · 04/02/2025 17:09

My Mum was always awful to me about periods- only ever bought me one pack of sanitary products and refused to even talk about buying more, and certainly wouldn't have ever offered the mildest bit of sympathy. It certainly didn't do much for our relationship. You don't need to pamper, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of chocolate, hot water bottle and a bit of empathy.

Oh, and military rations absolutely involve chocolate, so we don't need to worry about our girls...

Liv999 · 04/02/2025 17:08

Just buy her some chocolate, periods are miserable enough

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 04/02/2025 17:07

Mine gets chocolate, crisps and sympathy and she returns the favour for me. Why not?

I'm clearly too much in baby mode, I keep reading comments as chocolate and pampers and thinking there's better options than nappies!

And she should be polite bit a little chocolate is fine

I'm far from ''baby'' mode as DS is grown, but I too thought ''pampers''...surely the periods aren't that heavy?
I always associate ''Pamper'' with disposable nappies though.

My dd is 16 and had terrible periods. I always buy her a few treats to get her through it. She typical gets a few standard bars of chocolates, some crusts and a new coffee for her machine or some hot chocolate. She gets a pass on dishes on day 2-3 aswell. But she really struggled due to PCOS and tbh my mum was absolutely brutal and a bit of a twat so I don’t mind at all.

Crusts?
