DD demanding chocolate when she's on her period

Homeymum2 · 04/02/2025 16:35

My 14 yo DD insists that all her friends parents buy them chocolates and pamper them when they are cycling -

I'm being told I'm a terrible mum and badgered for chocolates

Am I an outlier to not cater to this?

Yes, you do crave chocolate when you have your period. Why are you denying her this

Whatwouldnanado · 04/02/2025 17:26

Of course get her a bit of chocolate. And evening primrose or starflower oil and a teen multivitamin.

MomBruh · 04/02/2025 17:25

Oh god, it's a bit like wanting a romantic husband.

She sees other mums being all caring & wants you to be spontaneously kind & offering chocolate and hot water bottles but you didn't know that was the expectation so now you've let her down with your lack of sixth sense.

Pull her up on the unacceptable rudeness, but maybe tell her you love her & you're sorry she feels low. Next month make sure there's some dairy milk in & make sure to take the time out ask if she's okay & give her a cuddle over the few days she's on - no doubt you do anyway but make a point of it.

Thank the lord I have boys.

I think at 14 she is able to determine for herself whether chocolate makes her feel better, or spinach for that matter.

Chocolate has never made me feel worse on my period. Ingesting a large amount of fibrous vegetable matter when I'm already feeling queasy probably would.

Eating extra iron once you're already on your period is as useful as downing a bottle of folic acid whilst you're in labour.

Same here. I'm usually big on veg and salad, but when I'm on I can't digest it properly which results in vomiting. I want chocolate, cheese, thin broths, fish, etc. Always been the same. At 14 I knew full well what I wanted, and now at 35 it's exactly the same...and I've tried to do otherwise! Doesn't work.

minwage2025 · 04/02/2025 17:24

I mean I'm 41 and my dad has been known to come and do my food shop if I'm on my period, or take me to hospital because an ambulance is delayed etc because I can't drive in pain
A bar of chocolate is nothing

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/02/2025 17:24

Amazed you won't let her have chocolate. Unnecessarily harsh

Lighterlilly · 04/02/2025 17:24

LookItsMeAgain · 04/02/2025 17:21

Ask her to describe how her friends are 'pampered' while on their period.

Have some chocolate in the house by all means but I'm sorry, I'm not one to run around fussing over someone because they are on their period. Give them paracetamol, a hot water bottle would be all I could muster up for my daughter but I'd have lots of empathy and be ready to bring them to a GP if their periods required further investigation.

Parent of the year right there, drawing rhe line at a bar of chocolate, 😂

DiscoBeat · 04/02/2025 17:23

I can't see the problem in making sure there's always a couple of bars of chocolate in.

Lighterlilly · 04/02/2025 17:23

Wow. Don’t you want chocolate when you’re on? I can’t imagine denying this,

thecherryfox · 04/02/2025 17:23

jesus, she’s not an adult with adult money who can cater to her own cravings. Get the poor girl some chocolate, what is the issue?

MrsSunshine2b · 04/02/2025 17:22

OpenFox · 04/02/2025 17:17

Chocolate can cause bloating whilst on a period and although it tastes nice it will make her feel worse!

A good parent would make her eat iron rich foods so buy her a bag of spinach 🤣🤣

Why isn't she capable of buying chocolate herself?

I don't understand all the comments about craving chocolate when on a period, but then I crave it everyday.

I can literally tell when my period's about to start because its the sole time I ever want chocolate. Wispa for me, please!

YouFreakingFreaks · 04/02/2025 17:21

SlowSeasons · 04/02/2025 17:10

A bar of chocolate OK, pampering... Not on your nelly 😂

Quite!

I see so many ‘precious’ youngsters it’s untrue. So many fragile drama llamas these days. It doesn’t foster resilience, and does them no favours at all in the long run, even if, as a pp thinks, it’s ‘cute’ to do so.

HotPotatoesies · 04/02/2025 17:21

I would take issue with a demand like that.

I wouldn't have any problems with it if she said she feels like she could do with some chocolate. I would gladly buy some if my daughter thought it would help her feel better. It's the "everyone else gets it, why don't I?" that I would consider a problem.

Also, not everyone craves chocolate while on their period - she should be encouraged to actually feel for what it is she wants. What would make her feel better while on her period? Personally, I need ginger ale in my life once a month, not chocolate.

This reminds me of the thread recently where the OP was putting together a period hamper for her daughter (including money for takeaways and treats) because that’s what all her friends were getting. No wonder the younger generations as so weak willed these days.

Periods are just a fact of life for women and girls and whilst I agree ensuing they are comfortable with pain relief if needed, making it into a big deal each month is not necessary.

I would however get my daughter chocolate if she asked (not demanded!)

Exactly this! Some pain killers and a hot water bottle if needed and get on with it. No need for all the fuss the Instahuns are creating.

Thisismeme · 04/02/2025 17:20

Does she not get chocolate otherwise? I’d assume there will be some in the house

WinterBones · 04/02/2025 17:20

She is your daughter.. why wouldn't you take a moment to make sure she has a few little treats and check in with her mentally/emotionally?

I'm not a 'pamper' mum, but i do make sure she's ok, and will sort out pain relief, a hot water bottle, a snack and a cuddle, and just take a little extra care if she is in pain.. its basic fucking parenting.

I remember what it was like the first day of my period, it was hell on earth, and my mum couldn't have cared less that i was writhing in bed crying my eyes out, DD is lucky that she isn't experiencing what i did, and i'm glad she doesn't, i wouldn't wish it on anyone, but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve a little extra love & attention from her mum on those days.

Or liver 😆

People are acting like chocolate is actual medicine. It is not. Using chocolate as comfort food, is a bad idea.

There is a physiological reason we crave chocolate around our period. Cocoa is high in magnesium (dark chocolate is particularly high) and this is what eases the cramps and relaxes you. Loads of info and research online.

biggreenapple24 · 04/02/2025 17:18

Seems a very combative approach on both sides.

Is chocolate in your budget? If yes, does it really need to be a big deal to buy her some?

I think that this treats periods as an illness. OK I never had pms or period pain so perhaps I'm biased. It could also lead to a disorderd relationship with chocolate. Feeling ill chocolate, in pain choco, having a bad day, choc.

We don't have chocolate in the house as a matter of course.

So you've never experienced anything akin to what OP's daughter might be, and have no idea how it feels to feel: faint, severely bloated, sick, migraines, emotionally strung, pelvic pain, back pain, joint pain.

We also don't keep chocolate in the house here. I don't turn to it for anything - aside from literally two out of seven days a month when I've got the lift scene from The Shining flooding into my knickers.

Ffs, competitive misery on this thread is astounding.
