DD demanding chocolate when she's on her period

Homeymum2 · 04/02/2025 16:35

My 14 yo DD insists that all her friends parents buy them chocolates and pamper them when they are cycling -

I'm being told I'm a terrible mum and badgered for chocolates

Am I an outlier to not cater to this?

She is trying to manipulate you.

dottiedodah · 04/02/2025 18:32

when did chocolate become a cure for period pain?
this was not a thing in the 70s

It may surprise you to find out that research and innovation has happened in the last 50 years.

Pancakeorcrepe · 04/02/2025 18:31

Why are you talking about Christmas chocolates? It is now February. Just get the girl some chocolate

Badgerandfox227 · 04/02/2025 18:31

I think it would be nice to run her a bath, get an hot water bottle and get her a bar of choc. Doesn’t have to be a full on spa session, but showing someone you love some love never hurts

Patterncarmen · 04/02/2025 18:30

Nothing wrong with a bit of chocolate and some extra rest and a hot water bottle.

I mean, all my mum did was hand me a box of tampax, and I was expected to get on with it, but there is nothing wrong with showing your DD some care and concern.

I really craved chocolate during my period, the chocolate drawer was under constant attack. I’d have been utterly miserable if I was denied it.

I really craved it too esp when younger and I had minimal PMS symptoms otherwise - never had a period pain or cramp for instance and couldn't even compare when in labour when asked. I imagine it/wonder if it can be worse for women and girls who really have a rough time when on their period.

misssunshine4040 · 04/02/2025 18:30

Periods are rubbish. I like to pamper myself when I'm on mine, I did the same for my daughter.
Why make a crap time even worse, let her have the chocolate and indulge her.

JandamiHash · 04/02/2025 18:27

I feel rather sad for people who think taking care of an add on their period is laughable and are all “Haha just because you’re on your period it doesn’t mean you have special treatment, nobody looks after ME on MINE!”

Being a teenager is hard, and being a girl is hard, why on earth wouldn’t you want the opportunity to be nice to your kid and look after them rather than sneering at their discomfort? Why wouldn’t you want better for your DD than what you have?

Because some people learn empathy through these scenarios. Others learn bitterness. Unfortunately.

And here is the reason why we have entitled adults. Having a period is part of normal life for females. Who pampers you every month? Do you take to your bed for the duration ? Women died for the women of today to be taken seriously and to be treated as equals and attitudes like this set us back half a century. Can you imagine a female soldier on the front line demanding time for a pamper session because she has her period ? No she just has to bloody well get on with it.

She's not waiting for orders to go over the top in Ypres though, she's a 14 year old child who feels crappy.

It doesn't take much effort to hand over a bar of Dairy Milk, a fluffy pair of socks, two paracetamol and a hot water bottle for a couple of days a month.

Some women and girls have excruciating pain on a par with labour, some have endometriosis, some have PMDD.

If trying a bit of walking or rocking from one leg to another and circling her hips doesn't relieve it, then it's perfectly reasonable to want to curl up and eat something sweet whilst trying to ignore the sensation of her uterus wanting to escape through her spine and strangle her, especially as teenagers are still in the transition period from feeling fully loved children - why add to the 'Nobody gives a shit about you and how you're feeling because you're female, you might as well get used to it now' message?

Normallynumb · 04/02/2025 18:29

I always kept ( small) chocolate bars and sweets in for the kids as imo it makes it a normal part of a balanced diet
All adults now none have a sweet tooth and not a filling in sight( unlike me)

UrsulasHerbBag · 04/02/2025 18:28

I have lots of sympathy for your daughter and all girls and women going through rubbish periods, so get her some chocolate. I wouldn’t pander to it though with pamper trays or whatever. Unfortunately the reality is she has years to go of periods and work/college/life in general isn’t built to drop everything for us so a little mum hug and chocolate while she can get it is a show of love and solidarity…it sure as shit won’t be there for her in years to come.

diddl · 04/02/2025 18:27

Christmas was week ago why do you still have chocolate lying around?

Presumably because she hasn't eaten it all yet!

Why is that so odd?

notacooldad · 04/02/2025 18:26

Maybe I’m a bit weird but surely there is chocolate available in the house? I mean, not loads but it’s a pretty normal thing to have in the snacky box for when someone fancies a treat snack
We have never had chocolate ( or ' just in case' snacks such as crisps or biscuits) in the house.
I'm not anti chocolate or against snacks but we don't just have them in as part of our weekly shop.

Dollshousedolly · 04/02/2025 18:25

You sound a real bundle of joy.

Normallynumb · 04/02/2025 18:25

Pampering no but surely you show love and care towards your own DD especially at her TOTM and make sure she has everything she needs?
Demanding chocolate isn't on, but surely you can throw a big bar and some paracetamol in your trolley?
I only have sons but even if a friend was staying on her period I would get sanitary supplies and " treats" in
I hate the word treats applied to food and drinks

diddl · 04/02/2025 18:25

We always have chocolate in the house - do other people not?

Nope, we rarely do.

Never ate it particularly when on periods either, nor does daughter.

JandamiHash · 04/02/2025 18:25

Homeymum2 · 04/02/2025 18:09

Wow! I've never had this much traction with a post before -

Everyone got copious amounts of chocolate at Christmas - she's eaten all hers and wants some of mine now because she's on her period or would like me to make a special purchase ...

Anyway - I've now shared some -

Go and buy some! Christmas was week ago why do you still have chocolate lying around?

Flick8 · 04/02/2025 18:25

Sure it's been said many times but many women crave chocolate on their period. Isn't it because of magnesium or something? It's just some chocolate for a teenager FGS. I don't agree with being overly restrictive like this. I've seen this happen and the kids have either become addicted to fizzy drink (only allowed rarely on school holidays previously) or gained weight extremely quickly at university with freedom to spend their loan on as many takeaways and junk as they liked.

I know a mum in a toddler group who won't even let her child have trace sugar in things like yoghurt which obviously have benefits like calcium. Each to their own how they parent but I think restrictive views on food and having banned foods are just as damaging as gorging on "bad" food.

NiftyKoala · 04/02/2025 17:51

My mom always had some in the house. Now I do that for my daughter. Couldn't you get some mini bars to give?

Mini bars of crack cocaine?

northwestgirl · 04/02/2025 18:24

Person1234 · 04/02/2025 18:23

Jesus, she's asking for chocolate, not a diamond tiara. Buy her some chocolate. What's the big deal?

Crazybaby123 · 04/02/2025 18:23

I like chocolate when I am on my period, but I was never 'treated' just because i was on my period. Can you order some in the monthly shop, we always have treat snacks in the house for when we are feeling like a treat??
