To be annoyed with DP for being sick on the floor?

On the way home tonight my DP said he was feeling a bit sick. I sorted dinner for our DC then took them upstairs to do bedtime while he lay on the sofa. I have no problem with doing this when he is feeling ill. Just finishing bath time and I hear him retching downstairs. He’s being sick on the dining room floor. Thankfully it’s a hard floor, but I can’t believe he didn’t make it another couple of metres to a sink or toilet. He continued to be sick on the floor while I was shouting down the stairs to him to get to the downstairs bathroom. Now it’s all gone quiet downstairs so I’m guessing he is back on the sofa and there is still sick on the floor. There is no way I am cleaning this up. Am I being unsympathetic? Or AIBU to be annoyed at him for being sick on the floor?

Not always possible to get to the bathroom or sink in time! I had HG and one evening I knew it was coming but as I moved to go to the toilet it just came out, there was nothing I could do to stop it- luckily my husband grabbed an empty laundry bag and cleaned up where I’d missed (it went In my hands). It’s horrible but when you’re that poorly I think a little sympathy is needed tbh

Did you miss the bit where I said "at least attempt to"?

Given she was only listening upstairs she has no idea what he attempted to do.

Bubble77bee · 03/02/2025 21:12

Thanks for the replies. I have checked on him - he’s on the sofa watching tv. And I take it back…. He did manage to grab the washing up bowl so thankfully it is contained.

People here are so insensitive! I have been in this position where I vomitted on the floor before I got get anywhere near the toilet. It was uncontrollable. My mom offered to clean it because I was so tired and pale but I told her I'd do it. She got me the rag cloths and a bag to clean it up. Perhaps you can help your husband, rather than being such a judgemental partner.

Catza · 03/02/2025 21:10

So you are upstairs, you haven't been downstairs at all yet somehow figured out exactly where he vomited and that he is now ok lying on a couch...

Am I reading this right. You’ve heard him vomiting while upstairs and now it’s gone very quiet and you are assuming he is ok? Why haven’t you gone down to check on him? He could have vomited and lost consciousness.

Lost consciousness?

Christmasbear1 · 03/02/2025 21:10

Whenever I have been sick I rarely make it to the bathroom on time.

Tisthedamnseason · 03/02/2025 21:09

Unless he has form for being disgusting, I would assume that he had no control over it. No one even slightly rational just thinks "meh, can't be arsed to try and get to the bathroom, I'll just vomit on the floor".

No, it isn't ridiculous. Sometimes you cannot make it too an appropriate recptical. I once had to vomit into my cupped hands as the urge was completely overwhelming.

Idontcareforg0b · 03/02/2025 21:09

It's possible to choke to death on vomit if trying to hold it in so if probably give him a break about it. Wouldn't be cleaning it up myself though!!

bzarda · 03/02/2025 21:08

I had awful food poisoning 2 weeks ago and I was sick every 40 minutes for about 12 hours - I still made it to the toilet every time. I don't think there is any excuse for standing there being sick on the floor, you surely keep running and if you've got a little on the floor it's your job to clean it up. You normally feel some relief after being sick, even if its just for 10 minutes or so, so he should be able to do it.

Im quite suprised at youre total lack of shits to give tbh. Yes if he is remotely capable I'd expect him to at least do most the cleaning up (I'd push a mop around once the floor was mostly cleared happily ebough) but why do you act like he did this on purpose? Presumably he wasn't expecting to vomit with no warning or he would at least have had a bucket to hand.
Have you at least gone down to check he is OK?
I mean, puke is gross but if my partner heard me being violently ill and their only response was to shout down the stairs for me to do it in the bathroom I'd find it pretty shitty tbh.

EmmaEmEmz · 03/02/2025 21:08

Also, once I start being sick, I figure it's better to stay where I am if possible and have someone run with a bowl to me rather than me move and risk being sick on the way to the toilet and making a second mess. My partner almost always deals with it for me if he's there (although I never expect him to) so I can go and clean myself up.

mdinbc · 03/02/2025 21:07

Did you know vomiting can happen while people have heart attacks? I would check on my DH before I got angry at him.

That's how I'm reading it too! Can you imagine if the roles were reversed!

He's obviously very unwell. No adult would vomit on the floor if they could make it to the bathroom.

YANBU that's vile and lazy

Agree.
Even my young children have made it to the loo.

angelikacpickles · 03/02/2025 20:59

That is ridiculous! Any adult should at least attempt to make it to the toilet (or a sink or basin at least) and should definitely be cleaning up unless they literally physically cannot do it.

MagentaRocks · 03/02/2025 21:05

A couple of weeks ago for the first time in my 52 years I felt sick randomly and didn’t quite make it to the toilet. I almost got there but was sick just before. My DH heard I was being sick, came upstairs, got me some water and cleaned up what I hadn’t managed to. I would have much preferred to make it to the actual toilet. YABU

EmmaEmEmz · 03/02/2025 21:05

I'm sick quite a lot - terrible gag sensitivity, almost every time I cough and acid reflux- and I have to admit a fair few times I've not got anywhere near a toilet, sink, bowl etc, especially if I'm in the (thankfully laminate) end of the living room. I don't think anyone would be sick on the floor if they could help it, because the clean up is disgusting (and often makes me even more sick, thankfully I have a partner who is brilliant with me and has a strong stomach!).

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 03/02/2025 21:04

If he has form for vomiting over the floor and leaving you to clear it up while he reads the paper or has a snooze, you can certainly leave him to it. If not, I'd be quite worried about him. Better check he's still conscious and making sense.

WhereDoBrokenHeartsGo · 03/02/2025 21:04

Are you sure he is ok? I agree if he felt so sick he should have brought a bin to have beside him but I’d be worried if all has gone quiet.

SummerFeverVenice · 03/02/2025 21:02

SpinningTops · 03/02/2025 21:00

Not OK! I'd be cross too. I've found it can be difficult to reach the toilet on time but guess what - I have a sick bowl next to me and 9/10 times would make it anyway.

I feel no matter how sick you are you can clean up after yourself so I'd leave him to it and isolate yourself - you don't want to go down too.

NancyJoan · 03/02/2025 21:00

For an adult to be sick like that, not make it to the loo, I would think they are really very ill (or drunk). No one would choose to be sick on their own home’s floor. Get him some water, pack him up to bed (spare room if you have one) and clear it up. Gross, but also kind.
