To be annoyed with DP for being sick on the floor?

On the way home tonight my DP said he was feeling a bit sick. I sorted dinner for our DC then took them upstairs to do bedtime while he lay on the sofa. I have no problem with doing this when he is feeling ill. Just finishing bath time and I hear him retching downstairs. He’s being sick on the dining room floor. Thankfully it’s a hard floor, but I can’t believe he didn’t make it another couple of metres to a sink or toilet. He continued to be sick on the floor while I was shouting down the stairs to him to get to the downstairs bathroom. Now it’s all gone quiet downstairs so I’m guessing he is back on the sofa and there is still sick on the floor. There is no way I am cleaning this up. Am I being unsympathetic? Or AIBU to be annoyed at him for being sick on the floor?

Sometimes vomit comes out before you have a chance to run.
agreed you shouldn’t have to clean it but bit of sympathy would be right

Theirs always enough time to get to a sink/toilet/bowl

I'm sometimes sick without any warning. A few days after having a new bedroom carpet fitted, I was in bed with a migraine. All I did was turn over and sick literally flew up into my mouth. By the time I'd jumped out of bed and clamped my hand to my mouth so I could to run to the toilet I retched and ended up throwing up all over the carpet and all over the rug. By that point I couldn't have moved even if I'd have wanted to because my whole body was shaking so much and just had to stand there and continue to be sick. It was the same after I'd had a lumbar puncture done. Woke up a couple of days after having it done and without any warning at all threw up from the pain in my head. I was sick that violently I lost consciousness. I ended up that dehydrated that when they tried to put a drip into my arm they couldn't find a vein. In the end after much trying they had to use a butterfly needle in the back of my hand so they could give me an anti sickness before giving me fluids I was sick without warning a lot that week I was in hospital. In fact out the many times I was sick and I was sick literally any time I moved my head. I managed to catch it in a cardboard bowl twice and that was only because I'd managed to grab one off the windowsill in the toilet before having a wee.

If I heard my OH being sick due to illness my first thought would be "shit, hope he's ok" and to go and check on him.

Can't imagine how little you have to care about someone to not go downstairs and see if they are ok, and instead shout at them and immediately go onto a public forum to complain about potentially having to clean it up.

Teanbiscuits33 · 03/02/2025 23:26

Okay, so he should have made it to the toilet and should definitely be clearing up his own vomit, but sometimes these things happen.

He continued to be sick on the floor while I was shouting down the stairs to him to get to the downstairs bathroom. What good does shouting do in the middle of someone vomiting? Did you expect him to move whilst he was mid vomit? All that would achieve is vomit being spread further.

That is... impressive!

I have had acid reflux related vomit. Wakes you up and and is instant. Horrible.

I occasionally get that, but only a little bit - fortunately. (I'm on Lansaprazole and found that once I retired, my night time reflux vomiting mostly stopped.)

Wow, that's some power vomiting right there! Shock You poor thing. Period related nausea and vomiting (and migraines that sometimes go with them) are horrific!

Fortunately for me, I grew out of it. I also used to get a bit dizzy at times...Once I felt my legs going and came to sitting on top of my accordion case. Fortunately, only the case was dented, the accordion was fine! (The neighbours might not have agreed...)

However, I'm now the possessor of a Mirena coil intended to prevent uterine cancer and at the age of 60 something, I now find myself being a bit nauseous from time to time. I've been using those OTC meds that you get for migraines to deal with it.

FindusMakesPancakes · 03/02/2025 23:21

Am I the only one who would actually go and clean up for my husband, same as I would if it was one of my children? Not because he isn't capable, but if someone is feeling that unwell, I look after them, not leave them to clean up vomit.

When I was a teenager, I suffered from occasional hormonal related vomiting - I'd be sick just before my period.

One time, I projectile vomited so hard that it hit my bedroom ceiling. I had no warning and no chance to make it to the bathroom.

So much judgement about not making it to the loo. I’m impressed by all of the organised pukers on here.

I was sitting on the sofa on the phone to someone when vomit shot out of my mouth so fast I didn’t even know what was happening and it kept coming for minutes all over me, the sofa, DH who was next to me, the coffee table and the floor. Stone cold sober, just a bad bout of Noro while heavily pregnant and I felt fine until that moment then like death for a week.

OP, with a wife like you he doesn’t need enemies. The contempt and lack of care for him is chilling.

I remember a nurse taking a meal to a teen patient's room. A few seconds later, nurse came running out with the tray of food and vomit. Patient had seen the food and chucked up all over it. Nurse made it to the kitchen, where the food is prepared, and vomited in the sink (where people wash their hands before they prep food). Her colleague laughed and said "you have no stamina". At least she didn't be sick on the ward. I would imagine that relatives would complain about seeing a nurse vomit.
All so instant.

Oh dear! 😬

Easily done though. As has been said (and illustrated,) people often don't CHOOSE where they vomit, and it's ridiculous to suggest otherwise!

Turningtotarot · 03/02/2025 23:10

I’ve been so ill once before that I was sick as I was trying to stand up… and then all the way to the bathroom. It was awful and I was horrified, but there was no way o could have done anything else. If that’s the situation you should have sympathy for him. If he just couldn’t be bothered to get up that’s really gross - but surely no one just vomits on the floor because they can’t be bothered moving?!

It happens

Clean up in aisle 3!

Anywherebuthere · 03/02/2025 23:08

I'm with you OP. He knew he was feeling sick so should have made sure to keep a sick bag or bowl within reach.

Theres no excuse for it. He needs to clean

Edit : Read your update. Lucky he got the bowl in time.

THIS! Thank you @XenoBitch 👏

As if everyone can control when and where they puke. And as IF people puke over 'inconvenient' places on purpose. FFS! Hmm

Some people post the most ludicrous and nonsensical stuff on here sometimes!

I’m talking about the man I live with, who will get up, stand there for twenty minutes and be sick all over the house rather than go to the bathroom as a precautionary measure.

Oh come ON! No-one would do this. When 'the man you live with' is ill with a sickness bug, he just stands there in the house for 20 minutes, and then just vomits on the carpet or furniture, without taking a single step towards the bathroom or loo.

Please!!!!!!😂

Absolutely not comparable in any way shape or form to a person in a hospital or who has been caught unawares.

Did you know vomiting can happen while people have heart attacks? I would check on my DH before I got angry at him.

It happened to my late husband when he had his stroke.

People can be caught unawares at home.
At least a person in hospital might expect to be sick.
