Why is there so much more anti immigration sentiment NOW?

Half my family are Indian and came over in the 50s. My British Indian dad (born here) said he has always been very lucky to have not experienced much hate and discrimination. He has a wide friendship network of people from all backgrounds. I’m not saying racism doesn’t exist. Not at all, just that the environments my dad was placed in outright racism was minimal. And he felt pretty much like a normal British lad going to school, uni, clubs, bars etc. My white grandparents had their concerns in the 90s when my parents married mostly in regards to potential bullying any future grandchildren would experience but really they were fine with their marrying. I have genuinely never had one negative experience (granted I have been in somewhat privileged situations in middle class areas in the South plus am white passing but do look ambiguous when tanned).

In recent years I have noticed a shift (for the worse) in terms of negative sentiment towards immigrants/poc. For me, it’s the worst it’s ever been. I certainly did not feel it 10/15 years ago. I see SO many racist comments on social media. Was not the case previously.

Im just interested in having a discussion why this could possibly be the case? People are definitely more woke now than they have ever been.

Is it the social media sites themselves? Less moderation? More political influencers?
More media attention?
People looking for an excuse to blame the economic decline (pandemic, brexit, col etc)?

Just curious what people’s thoughts are?

There is more anti immigration feeling because the numbers are much higher. X6 more than in the 8Os for example.

User32459 · 15/06/2025 22:38

Insane, unsustainable numbers.

Terrible integration (with more recent immigration)

Millions of people now in UK who don't even speak English

The existential pressure on housing and jobs

Decimation of working class communities (immigrants tend to settle where housing is cheaper)

Crime waves/escalated risks of terrorism

Importing of cultures with medieval attitudes to women

Just letting hundreds a day pour over the channel to be housed and fed at our expense

There's been tensions for a while but I think the Southport incident, coupled with the added attention on grooming gangs, has really ramped it up.

My Bangladeshi and Indian work colleagues mainly voted for Brexit and are against the large increase in immigration because they see how it can unsettle a country if it's not controlled.

People see the bad state of the NHS, lack of housing and don't want millions being spent to house and support illegal immigrants. And they want those who commit crimes to be deported.

But white British people can't express the views that my colleagues do without being shouted down on MN and left wing media as bigots and racists.

There needs to be a discussion or Britain will sadly move to the right like much of Eutope and the USA

I agree, It annoys me when white British people get all offended on behalf of people such as your colleagues,
when they themselves aren’t offended at all!!

They are NOT houses in 4 star hotels ffs.

In my town they are. You are lucky if in your town they are not. We've had riots going on about it last year and the hotel set on fire.

Interestedkind · 15/06/2025 14:38

I think racism has always been there it’s just people have more platforms now to express their despicable ideas

It’s a complex issue. Multi faceted. But yes this could help with integration.

Yeah it could help in the same way as trying to use sellotape to plug a gaping hole in a sinking ship.

Jennps · 15/06/2025 14:17

Is that your answer to the problems caused by mass immigration?

Maybe there should be compulsory English classes and culture lessons in these hotels then. Would be useful for the people taught and better than hanging around the streets with nothing to do

Completely agree. Otherwise they have to wait a long time. Sometimes a year. Rather than leaving them to rot in hotels.

im also curious regarding these hotels. I imagine they’re turned into dorms. Multiple beds in a room rather than single occupancy. But I could be wrong of course.

If the government are aware about the importance of integration why did they cut funding for English language classes.

It’s not rocket science to know that too much cultural change, too quickly unsettles the fabric of society.

It’s also not rocket science to know that when immigration on the whole brings in net takers (fact) rather than net contributors, those who have to pay for that will feel aggrieved.

Immigration in controlled numbers benefitted the country. Uncontrolled mass migration to this country in the last couple of decades, and especially the last 5 years has been a disaster. Economically and culturally.

It was true for that particular group of girls then. seeing as I was there and you were weren't I think I'd know. Unless of course you were in my class in 1983

Sure.

Ok.

Grooming gangs and attacks on women and girls primarily.
f

Although in reality, you’re statistically most likely to be attacked/ killed by a man you are related to/ live with - presuming from your comment that’s not an immigrant…?

I think this nails it plus we keep seeing images of the rubber boats coming across the channel everyday and knowing they will be housed in 4* hotels.

FedupofArsenalgame · 15/06/2025 07:30

JHound · 15/06/2025 02:38

It did not happen and that is obvious. “White honky” literally makes no sense as the latter is an offensive term for the former.

And the claim about somebody not being part of the “sistahood”. Nobody speaks like that. It’s clearly not true.

I think there have been a few cultural shifts.

  1. Less integration. When my mother came here, she sought out friendship with British people, now it seems people stick more to associating with others from their own backgrounds.
  2. More religious fundamentalism so that alarming sights, such as women being covered from head to foot in shapeless black fabric, are becoming commonplace.
  3. Expressing discomfort with less integration or more fundamentalism is taboo. People are labelled racist if they voice it, so their unexpressed feelings are festering into resentment and anger.
  4. Terrorism in the UK - homegrown extremists, rather than the IRA. People are scared.
  5. Overstretched public services and the appearance of newcomers being prioritised in housing, for example, and it being difficult to get a dentist of GP appointment.

I think this nails it plus we keep seeing images of the rubber boats coming across the channel everyday and knowing they will be housed in 4* hotels.

Maybe because queuing is a particular British trait. Not sure if happens so much anywhere else in the world lol

Queue jumpers exist everywhere including in the UK.

But that PP started discussing immigration and immediately linked it to numbers of non-white people on the bus. “Immigrant” and “non-white” are not synonyms.

FedupofArsenalgame · 14/06/2025 23:12

JHound · 14/06/2025 21:55

“Culturally normal” for whom? Be specific?

And why do you assume all non-white people are immigrants?

It works the other way too. I was one of 2 white kids in my form group. Was colled white honky, ghost girl and told I. wasn't part of the sistahood

That did not happen.

JHound · 14/06/2025 21:59

QuiteUnbelievable · 14/06/2025 21:36

OP back in the 50s smaller more manageable numbers of immigrants came over which meant no pressure on services and I suppose less impact on existing communities and ultimately more assimilation and lesser racism?

Unfortunately when people feel their quality of life is being impacted they will react.

This isn't why for everyone involved I think smaller numbers of immigration should happen.

But in the 50s anti-immigrant semtiment was rife. I don’t know why people are trying to
rewrite history. The Windrush generation of immigrants faced hostility, abuse and phenomenal levels of discrimination.

Anti-immigrant sentiment is the norm in the UK and - just the focus of the ire changes.

Because our services are at bursting point.

I'm often one of very few white people on the bus, and that's on a bus of around 40 other people. Everyone pushes their way onto the bus even if I'm at the front of the queue (it's culturally normal for them) and then on the bus a lot are all talking at the top of their voices or have their phones on loud.

I understand that people who may be coming here because of war, persecution or other horrid stuff in their home country, but we are too small an island with too little resources to cope. They need to stop at the first countries they come to for asylum. I also really resent my taxes being spent on hotel accommodation for asylum seekers.
