Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

Good luck buying a UK made phone, computer or car.

meditrina · 02/02/2025 10:46

And I wonder what will happen to foreign tourism to US over the next few years?

meditrina · 02/02/2025 10:44

I don't agree with the "because we can't do everything, doing anything is pointless" line of thinking.

I was just looking at Californian wine exports - the two biggest destinations (by far) are Canada followed by UK. So one little step could be swopping to New Zealand or Aussie wines, or European ones, or some from the growing (and improving) British wineries. But for those don't drink wine at all, let alone Californian, that's irrelevant.

Boycotts usually don't change practices or really dent countries or even companies (Nestle, anyone?), but they are a way of standing for what you believe to be right.

towelsandsheets · 02/02/2025 10:41

Cost and availability make American and Chinese products the default in the UK

We can't pay people a UK wage and make goods cheap enough to satisfy the UK market .....

Thing are Usually ordered via American owned companies

However even small changes can hurt - a company losing a few % of sales rather than growing will usually panic

He has to have a hard line to stop illegal immigration so I'm fine with it.

Tanking your own economy is a pretty hard line.

He's said he is imposing 100% tarrifs on BRICS countries. I'm in one of them.

I'm not sure he's realised this will go both ways then.

Was listening to a podcast this morning suggesting that if Canada significantly raised tarriffs on components of all things Tesla. Now, if the rest of the world joined in.....😂😂😂

I'd rather buy American than Chinese.

I admire the scale of the Chinese factories, some of them are mind blowing. But I really wish they weren't there and there was actually more choice across the board.

I try to buy British first and foremost, but some stuff is either non-existent or the cost is prohibitive.

Can the power of combined sensible mumsnetters stop this bullying self obsessed moron from destroying everything by boycotting American products and systems (and boycotting the Chinese made single wear fast fashion made by children and modern slavery)
It is possible to buy UK made items - seems expensive initially but will tend to last longer.

Treaclewell · 02/02/2025 10:32

I don't thunk Geo 3's madness was of this idiotic sort.

Phineyj · 02/02/2025 10:32

This thread is a bit hilarious (if not the tariff situation).

Here we are typing on phones made with American military technology. Produced in China yes but with all the intellectual property and profits flowing back to the US. Watching US TV. Working on US owned cloud software. Searching for things with Google's algorithm.

Of course we import things from the US. They're just invisible mostly.

The fossil fuels point is very valid of course and absolutely we could buy more Canadian stuff if we wanted.

Get those Goldfish and Chips Ahoy over here pronto, Canadian friends!

Yes, so simplistic, the global economy is intertwined, of course this is going to impact the UK economy!

I didn't say it wouldn't impact the UK, I just don't think there's any point boycotting American goods or believe that it would mitigate the effects. At its worse, it could create a deficit in trade between us and the US and create an incentive to slap tariffs on us as well.

But yeah, I guess that's the simplistic answer, far more informed to rant about bullies 🤷🏼‍♀️

cakeorwine · 02/02/2025 10:31

The US stock market fell on Friday. It will be interesting to see how it fares tomorrow - as well as the other stock markets.

People's pension funds are tied up in the stock markets.

The world economy does not need trade wars.

AdoraBell · 02/02/2025 10:29

I can’t think of anything I buy of American goods.

WinterMorn · 02/02/2025 10:29

I love Canada. I love America. It’s awful to see this happening - and I am completely backing Canada in this!

I think George III might be a more apt comparison

Who is really running the US at the moment?

Oh but it will. It will when he expands this programme and since world economies are so entertwined it will
have a knock on effect. All top economists are saying so. It’s naive to think otherwise.

Also the attitude annoys me - WW2 was ‘nothing to do’ with Canadians and we sent thousands of troops and fought along side. We are a Commonwealth country, ally and friend.

Yes, so simplistic, the global economy is intertwined, of course this is going to impact the UK economy!

Treaclewell · 02/02/2025 10:25

Are we all using Microsoft? Is Linux based in the USA?
T is also planning to shut down the NOOA system of satellites monitoring weather and climate. And their bases in Antarctica.
Forget about Gilead, he's aiming for Little House on the Prairie. With a flat Earth.
I had a friend who claims to have a friendship with Musk. He's targetting us. And there's not a lot we can do except hope for a ketamine OD. Or passing aliens to break the Prime Directive.

Parker231 · 02/02/2025 10:23

Trudeau is suggesting to Canadians not to holiday in the US. We don’t although we do visit DSil in Colorado and like going over to Burlington in VT for lunch and shopping.

sleepwouldbenice · 02/02/2025 10:21

Possibly a stupid question.... but as he "only" put 10% on fuel , why not increase that internally to 25%/40% and sell your fuel elsewhere? Practical or dumb?

On a side note, what's the chances of Carney getting elected, or is Canada likely to swing more right wing, just wondering how this might shift again as leaderships change?

Maybe I'm being naive, but a country does tend to pull together when it's under attack from another country, be it economically or in a war.

What I don't understand is how one man can have the power to instigate such massive decisions. Surely there is a team of economists and advisors and the decisions are made collectively? I mean, Trump is an idiot, in no way a good businessman let alone an economist, and mad to boot. How can he unilaterally make these decisions?!

Because he's King. And not a modern day King like Charles. The Henry VIII type. With his court.
